Review by OSWALD From Hotwacks:
Billed as home studio recordings from 1965-1975, this set is a pretty monumental collection of Townsend's demos. The nature of the material makes it impossible to tell how comprehensive it is, but a quick glance imparts that this collection very nicely supercedes a series of releases, both underground and sanctioned. As any Who fan knows, Townsend's home demos make for fascinating listening -- many of the arrangements, licks, and even vocal phrasing is already present on these rougher takes. Add to that a sort of home-made funkiness (think a more pissed-off, English version of the Band), and you have a set of recordings that stack up very well against their more familiar later, full-band versions. Townsend has leaked out this sort of stuff on the SCOOP collections for some time, but those have always been piecemeal affairs -- one track from here, another from ten years later, synth instrumentals next to unreleased songs. This collection is wonderfully focused, chronological, and in pretty strong fidelity. The three Who benchmarks, TOMMY, WHO'S NEXT, and QUADROPHENIA, are well represented, as are a host of popular album and singles tracks in sketchbook form. The thrill of having these cuts in one place and in a reasonable order is indescribable. The drawbacks to this set are few -- sound quality is pretty consistant, the material is endlessly engaging. My one complaint is the packaging. A cool mini-poster of rare foreign EP sleeves is killer, but there are no notes to put the cuts into context. That being said, it's pretty obvious where this stuff comes from, and it should be of major interest to Who buffs the world over. Pete's demo of "Empty Glass" might be the most intense thing he ever laid down...

Review by Matt Whipple from Hypertext Who:
This is another beautiful package from HIWATT! A super 5 CD set complete with a 9.5" x 14" double-sided poster. The tracks are all PT demos presented in chronological order of when they were recorded. The back insert states: "ALL TRACKS RECORDED 1965-1975 BY PETE TOWNSHEND IN HIS HOME STUDIOS: OLD CHURCH STREET, CHELSEA AND TWICKENHAM". Although I doubt that any of the tracks for Who Are You were recorded prior to 1975. The majority of these tracks were taken from Pete's Scoop series, The Lifehouse Chronicles and Pete's website. Disc 1 actually has a 26th song not listed on the disc - Accidents (this was written by Pete for the Thunderclap Newman release - w. Speedy Keene and a very young Jimmy McCollough a lead guitarist). On Disc 2, last 2 seconds of track 3 starts to play Jaguar. Disc 5, Track 18 - should be No Road Romance NOT No Road Running as stated on the back scan. The others are from various bootlegs still not officially released. An initial listen reveals excellent sound quality.

Most of these tracks were never before released on any other collector's disc. Five tracks from Stockholm, September 4th 1967 are Vibratory's merge avaliable here for the first time. Except Mark J's "Winter Jam Mix" all other edits are mine. Driving South is transferred from the vinyl boot "Broadcasts" (Trade Mark of Quality Records) and represents the only complete version of this take. It was recorded by a fan directly from the first radio brouadcast. All subsequent broadcasts present edited version including all official releases to this day. Like a Rolling Stone (from Hunter College) is included because it's one of the best version of the song Jimi ever played (MHO).

Very rare early recordings including Mick Jagger with the Little Boys Blue in 1961.

This CD was pirated by an unidentified label and issued as "Beginning Of The English Blues." It was for sale briefly on Amazon (it's unavailable now and will probably remain so), where a reviewer left these (edited for coherence) comments:

A great compilation of obscure 1961-1964 recordings. What will pique the interest of the hardcore Stones aficionado the most are the first eight tracks: the very earliest Rolling Stones recordings, which have rarely, if ever surfaced on other CDs. The first four songs are labeled as dating from a tape of Little Boys Blue, a pre-Rolling Stones lineup of the group, recorded (probably at a private rehearsal) in late 1961. Dick Taylor (later of the Pretty Things), guitarist Bob Beckwith, and Allen Etherington (on maracas) were part of Little Boys Blue on this recording. While the track listings are vague as to what actual future members of the Stones also participated, it's certain that Mick Jagger's on lead vocals, and possible that Keith Richards and Brian Jones are on the guitars.

Included are unreleased versions of the Jagger-Richards compositions "It Should Be You" and "My Only Girl" (aka "That Girl Belongs To Yesterday"). There's also "Leave Me Alone," a Jagger-Richards original not released by anyone! There's also the unreleased studio effort "Goodbye Girl," a routine blues-rocker dated as having been recorded in November 1964 and written by Bill Wyman. While these are no doubt fascinating for the Stones fan, as well as historically important, the subsequent 24 BBC session tracks are better music. Those BBC performances include many songs that didn't appear on the group's early releases, such as covers like "Roll Over Beethoven" (a different version than a more commonly circulated one also recorded around this time for another BBC session), "Meet Me In The Bottom," Jimmy Reed's "Ain't That Loving You Baby," "High Heel Sneakers," and Bo Diddley's "Crackin' Up." The fidelity on these is generally very good, with the performances different enough from the studio versions to make them quite interesting!

This record was released as a limited edition.
This version is on white vinyl with a sepia colour photo and blue insert with "Limited Edition" red sticker on front. A light beige coloured vinyl with a transparent sleeve and without a red sticker has been identified, but as yet no further infornmation is known.

It is my opinion that the light beige colour version could either be a second print or just a release on different coloured vinyl. The quality of the image and the details are identical but what causes me to believe it is a second print is the lack of the blue insert and red sticker.

======================================

First of all, this was originally going to be a 2cd set of 'Darkness' studio outtakes. As I kept editing these songs, there was no way they could've fit on only 2cd's. (Plan was, 1cd 'Original Darkness Mixes', other cd of various outtakes). Then next thing I noticed, I had planned a 6cd set with 2cd's of Live tracks ... In the end I decided not to include the live cd's which made this 'only' a 67 track, 4cd collection. I used John's 'brucebase' website (link somewhere below) as a database to see which tracks were 'worth' editing, where I could find them and so on.

Making this a 4cd set allowed me to include some of the tracks I would've otherwise left out, such as the alternative 'Dont Look Back' & 'Ramrod' which are both in a bit worse sound quality. I wouldn't say any of the tracks sound 'bad'.

When burning this compilation, make sure you burn it DAO - without the 2 seconds gaps between each track.

My favourite tracks: D3Track01 & D3Track16.

Big thanks to FrankiesJoint & Jumpstone for finding me most of the tracks.

During this period Three Dog Night was undoubtedly the most popular band in America with twenty-one consecutive Top 40 hits and twelve straight gold LPs. By late '75, they had sold nearly 50 million records.

The show goes on... Since 1986, Three Dog Night has toured extensively. Their records continue to sell in great numbers and they receive regular airplay on radio stations around the world.

UPGRADE

"Zombies in the Storm"

Hemix says
The very good and famous recording of Orleans, 15th June 1977, freshly upgraded.
This is most probably a soundboard recording, but I would rate the sound only 7,5/10 (not excellent). Nevertheless, it's a must have for every Magma fan because it contains many unreleased track, and most notably the famous long version of Zombies, unavailable on any other boot.

Jean DE ANTONI - guitar
Benoît WIDEMANN - keyboards, synthesizer
Guy DELACROIX - bass
Clément BAILLY - drums, keyboards, voice

02 - Titilbon (6:36)
03 - Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh (39:00)
04 - Troller tanz (3:37)

what was done in this upgrade :
- right / left balance corrected on all tracks
- severe volume fluctuations were on many tracks. All have been repaired, sometimes using patches from other parts of the song
- an annoying cut in the middle of Zombies (long version - or Ehmenthett Ré II as it is now known) have been repaired, without losing any music.
- 2 cuts were on MDK. A bit of music was lost because of the first cut (at approx 14 min) so I did my best to remove it while having a seamless performance, but connoisseur will notice a transition that is not on the original composition - but that's better than having a hole. The second one was a cut with overlaps, so there was no difficulty to remove this one.

This is great stuff taken from kinescopes* of the TV variety show which was broadcast live each week on CBS. Quality is very good considering the era. Enjoyable black & white. Never issued commercially anywhere. Thanks to K Rob for the VHS tape.

*A kinescope is a recording of a television program made by filming the picture from a TV monitor's CRT (or "kinescope" in its original meaning). Alternatively, it can refer to the equipment used for this procedure: basically a 16 mm or 35 mm movie camera mounted in front of a TV monitor, specially synchronized to the monitor's scanning rate.
