Notes
This concert was broadcast as part of the 'Festtags-Konzerte' on Swiss radio station SRF3.
They broadcast live gigs every year around Christmas and New Year's Day.
I tried to get rid of all DJ talk and station IDs. The transitions between the songs are as smooth as I could make them.
The DJ quite brutally started talking over the ending of 'Imagine'. That's why there is a sudden fade out at 3'35''.

Sound quality
Excellent FM recording. Since this is an open air recording and the music is often rather quiet, there sometimes are background noises to be heard (audio sample #1). They are part of the original broadcast.

This recording is incomplete. The very first song is missing and the track "Where's My Apple Pie," towards the end of the set, is also incomplete due to a tape change.  Comprised of two sets that cover a wide range of material, this concert captures Joan Baez at a uniquely transitional time in her career. Although she had dipped out of the popular music spotlight for several years, the sessions that resulted in her career rejuvenating album, Diamonds and Rust, were about to be completed. Baez was still a serious interpretive folk singer and political activist, but was beginning to embrace a more mainstream sound, and openly displaying a sense of humor on stage.

The material Baez chose to perform this night ranges from some of her earliest traditional material like "Kumbaya" and "Johnny I Hardly Knew Yeh" right up to songs featured on her most recent album, including "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," soon to become the biggest hit of her career.  The obligatory Dylan covers are featured, but rather than mining his "protest songs" of yesteryear, as had usually been the case, she chooses to interpret two of his more recent compositions, "Forever Young" and "Mama, You Been On My Mind," which she modifies accordingly.

During the second set, Joan's sister, Mimi Farina, makes an appearance on stage (for 2 songs), contributing to a particularly enjoyable sequence that showcases Joan's sense of humor and illustrates how captivating their voices could sound together. The sisters perform "Less Than a Song" and the old Southern hymn, "Ain't You Got A Right To The Tree Of Life."
Back to back versions of "Love Song To A Stranger," parts 1 and 2, are featured, as is" Where's My Apple Pie," a rare 45 single charity release sold only at her shows during this time. The set ends with Baez's angelic read of the traditional hymn "Amazing Grace," which she does as an audience sing-a-long.

(it's definitely a different recording, same show) The sound on this is very good and enjoyable. Thanks to Mauro for capturing the sound from the TV show.

04 The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (with band)
05 Sweeter For Me
06 Dancin' In The Streets (with band)
07 Diamonds & Rust

- original notes:
The Rolling Thunder Band was a big gathering of musicians, Bob Dylan was the headliner, along with Roger McGuinn, amongst others. Dylan comes out and plays for about an hour, then Roger McGuinn comes out and plays a few songs.

Then Joan comes out and plays about 30 minutes. Then Bob comes back out and finishes the evening's set. The tape starts off with Joan telling the crowd: "I gotta admit, we're being packed in here like a god damn zoo, you've been doing a real nice job, we appreciate it". "This place is very funky, very wierd". At the beginning of track 3, Joan starts talking with a bad southern accent. It's her introduction to "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". Which surprisingly Joan has Dylan's band backing her on stage and they play that song together, along with a cover of Martha & The Vandellas "Dancin' In The Streets".

After "Diamonds & Rust", Joan and Bob perform 2 more songs together (not included here).

Terrific performance well captured, especially considering the era - Here we have the perfectly voiced but highly political Baez; always interesting -
Thanks and appreciation are owed the recordist, of whose name I am unaware, for the fine source recording - The torrent has applause in balance, and hoots, etc. removed or reduced - It is a fresh transfer from my copy and therefore will differ from previous versions of this performance, if any.

Faults: See note re t13, 34 - Minor usual audience interference, relatively frequent recording interference - The pausing of the recorder resulted in some none to very brief applause segments.

15 Holy Night

- original notes:
Joan performs a free concert on the steps of San Francisco's City Hall as her Christmas gift to the city. Joan is participating in the candlelight memorial march, following the November 27, 1978 assassinations of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk (killed by the former Supervisor Dan White). White was paroled in 1984 and committed suicide less than two years later.

This recording seems like a really important piece of music history. I believe this was professionally filmed as well,  because at the beginning of "Amazing Grace", Joan says "The television part of this has to end exactly on the dot". I was not able to find any film available or any reference on the net.

The tape played really slow, so I spent a few days working on this doing pitch tests.  I believe I've adjusted it to near perfection. This sounds SO GOOD now !!! I'm sure many Baez fans haven't heard this one. You'll enjoy it.

During this concert, Joan performs her first recorded song "Scarlet Ribbons" ~ recorded in 1958. After Joan performs "Blowin" in the Wind",  she is joined by a choir and they sing through a collection of Christmas songs. Unfortunately "Holy Night" fades out early, missing the very end of the show. Joan also thanks Bill Graham for the sound.
