This came from a trade with the mega Thompson trader in the UK several years ago. It is described as a soundboard and it has an excerpt from the Soundcheck. The show also has Thompson's amusing and teasing remarks to the crowd about not knowing what baseball was. (The Cardinals were going to play Game 1 of the World Series against the Brewers the next day.) I compared the contents with Thompson's The Life and Music of Richard Thompson set but found nothing commercially released. No SBE's and I generated a .ffp file when I converted the WAV > FLAC.

This recording is at the same venue but several months before the commercial CD/DVD release, "Richard Thompson - 1,000 Years of Popular Music" (Cooking Vinyl, 2006) was recorded. The back story is that Thompson liked the venue so much at this show that he decided to return later to use it for his commercial release. On his own site, on a Q & A thread, he was asked on 2004-11-13:

Q: "How do you look back at the 1000 Yrs Tour with the ladies? Is it true, there's a chance of a DVD?"

Thompson: "We are shooting a DVD in January, hopefully in San Francisco, for release next year."

keithdturner posted this show here in Feb. 09 a a reseed; I do not know when it was first uploaded or who taped it. There were a number of SBEs scattered about but I fixed them; otherwise, the audio was not changed.

This recording had some unique issues.

There was a Crackling thoughout the ENTIRE recording.

Possibley do to some other nearby electronic device.. ??

A lot of TLC was done to remove the 'Crackle' without too much noticable distortion of the recording.

I opted NOT to do any noise reduction or sound removal on this, as there was already a lot of processing done to this.

Notes:

This recording found it's way to me from a long time buddy/collector via a portable HD.

The HD contains a good 50-75 shows from Wolf Trap from about 2010 - 2013

I have found NONE of these to be in circulation, nor have I found many to have been recorded via any other source.

So I would regard these as very unique.

I can conclude that almost all of these recordings (if not all) were recorded via ALD.

They are all Mono, and many of the recordings have various stages of Clipping.

It's not clear if the clipping is only in the copies I received or are on the original files (which I had no access to)

Without overly enhancing or destroying the recordings, I have done the best I could to master them and put them out.

I would welcome any input on the history of these recordings or anything else that someone could enlighten me on their origin.

this was an unexpected show for me. a friend bought tickets and couldn't go. originally i'd thought about it but with a lot going on i said i'd pass. when he decided he couldn't make it i guess it was meant to be for us. so, here we have the great richard thompson recorded in woodstock, ny recently. he had just hosted a music camp not far away including, aside from himself, sons teddy & jack thompson, sloan wainwright, martin simpson and happy traum and more. this show was scheduled during that week and sold out very fast. the show was mostly short sets with a few different combinations and then a big closing finale. john sebastian even guested on harmonica with happy traum. i stood at the back of the small hall and with lots of activity, especially at the beginning of the sets, you can hear the occasional rustling against my recorder. i had to put in some work on this but overall i think it's pretty good. what you have here is about 3 hours of great music. i'll list the info below aside from it being in the info file.

But I don't see any documentation that Raitt played this Grand Rapids venue as the headliner, though she was in Cleveland on May 16, 1989, and in Cincinnati on May 21, 1989. As good as this recording is of Thompson, it seems odd that there is no recording of Raitt circulating. Certainly there is nothing cited in db.etree and nothing for that date has been uploaded here. Maybe there is something said in the show that I missed. I'd like to say that I was a thoughtful, intelligent teenager then and that I went to the show, but I think Maria and I were saving our pennies hoping that Madonna would play somewhere near us in 1990. Auburn Hills!!

The show is described as - and it sounds like it very well good be - a soundboard recording. The equipment used is unknown. Maria got this in a CD trade from her UK contact and extracted the show to a hard drive in 2011 using EAC. I checked the WAV files for SBEs, converted it to FLAC (level 8), generated a .ffp file, and created the torrent. Nothing else was altered. I do not see that it has ever appeared here on DIME. I found none of the tracks here listed and used on "RT - The Life and Music of Richard Thompson."
