I received this disc as gift from a customer through work. After listening to the disc I asked where it came from and was given the immortal line "If I told you I would have to kill you". After some good natured pressing, the name of WMSE (Milwaukee School of Engineering) came up. This was recorded at the school's studio. I do know that the recording is very good, the onhand crowd sounds very small, and the band is absolutely smoking hot.

The Concerts for Kampuchea came out at that moment in my life bridging the classic rock artists I had initially fallen in love with in my early teens (e.g. The Who, Paul McCartney) and the new artists that had become my passion (e.g. The Clash, Elvis Costello, The Pretenders). Kampuchea offered great performances from both, on film and record.

The shows themselves took place over four nights at London's Hammersmith Odeon in late 1979. A year later saw the release of a concert film from the event, which made its way to the US art house circuit where I first saw it (it later screened on TV as well).

In March of 1981, Atlantic Records released a double live album culled from the concerts which featured most of the performances seen in the film with a few variations. For instance, there are more McCartney songs in the movie than on the album, and one extra Who song on the album ("Baba O'Riley") not seen in the original film.

Undoubtedly due to rights and clearance challenges and the charity aspect of behind the project, the two-LP Concerts for Kampuchea has never been released on CD and the film has never come out on DVD (at least officially). Bootleg videos of Kampuchea are out there, derived from the aforementioned TV broadcasts.

Earlier this year, JEMS obtained tapes from a former Atlantic Records executive. Included were three cassettes marked "Concerts for Cambodia." One listen made it clear that the cassettes contained rough cuts of possible tracks for inclusion on the live album, undoubtedly transferred from mix-down reels to these cassettes for song-selection purposes.

To be clear, the tapes don't contain the full artist sets; it is all the songs from the album and film, plus another 20 from the same artists that were under consideration for the double LP but didn't make the final cut.

We believe this is the first time the material has ever circulated, though three of the cuts ("Crazy Little Thing Called Love," "Brass in Pocket," "Three Time Loser") were added to broadcasts of Kampuchea on US and later Japanese TV (the source of most bootleg DVDs and YouTube clips). Because they were not included in the original film, with the benevolent blessing of the Mods, they are included here.

Highlights include two leftovers from a spirited McCartney & Wings set, "I've Had Enough" and a cover of Eddie Cochran's "Twenty Flight Rock." Macca would later release a studio version of the latter on Choba B CCCP.

From the Clash we also gain a pair, a fine "Bankrobber" and an underwhelming "London Calling." A rollicking "You Belong to Me" is the add from Costello, while The Pretenders offer a long "Private Life."

We wrap up with expanded sets from The Specials and Ian Dury & The Blockheads, both in the prime of their careers, and British reggae band, Matumbi.

The quality of these unreleased performance is excellent and despite the age of the cassettes, they played back very well. Samples provided.

We thought this might make a welcome holiday gift from JEMS to the community if you loved the Kampuchea album like I did. We'd also like to point out that the highly rated charity Cambodian Children's Fund could probably use your donation, if you are moved to give in the spirit of the original concerts.

Maybe someday this will inspire some über's to share their unbooted treasures, such as the 'complete' River studio sessions.

The story behind this is:
"I was working as an assistant engineer at the Record Plant, and we recorded a number of shows on the tour for a live album. When they came back to LA Toby Scott was starting to mix.
I asked him if he would allow me to do a mix and evaluate my skills. He let me use the 24 track masters to do one song. He liked what I did and said if I want to play some more I could.
I had forgotten about the tapes until a few days ago while going through some old boxes."

Huge thanks to Bob S. for the show.

Notes by TA:
"A buddy called me at the last minute to go see this show. (I think he actually invited my recording equipment, not me, even though he knows I like listening to Lou.)(Only kidding if you read this Bob.) Crobar is a disco / dance hall on the West side of Mid-Town Manhattan. Once you get past the frilly designer entranceway and the few side bars and cozy areas you wind up in a room the size of half a high school gymnasium. Problem with the place for a show like this is that they sell the whole building to capacity, which includes all the people that are allotted for many small side areas, so that when Lou hit the stage, everybody converges into the one main room, which turned the place into a real sardine can of about 1500 people. Surprisingly, the crowd was really into Lou, relatively quiet and into the music, very unusual for the NYC set, most of whom appear just to be seen at the gig (or just to say they were there), rather than to appreciate it. Me, I know why I was there ... I had work to do, and so I did. But you can hear how cooperative the crowd was during the piano / voice duet Vanishing Point. This NYC crowd resisted the typical mid-song cat calls that normally fill the voids of silence. The place was so quiet, you will hear the bottles and bottle caps falling at the bar behind me. One more thing, my special thanks to the tall geek standing behind my buddy breathing down his neck like an air conditioning vent. Once you forced my buddy to leave, you tried to push your way in front of me. Hope your ribs are healing.

I have not had the time to put together a set list for this show. Though Lou announced the names for many songs, most songs were new to me. Anybody who thinks they can put together a set list, your help is most appreciated.

This is an original recording by me that has never been released before. Hope you all enjoy this recording as much as I do. As always your comments and star ratings are appreciated.

Please do not distribute this recording in lossy formats such as MP3. Though it's perfectly alright with me if you convert it to those kinds of formats for your own personal listening on your i-pods, etc., I would prefer that if you share it with a friend, kindly do so in .wav, .shn or .flac formats."

Note by coyote:
"I got a look at the handwritten planned setlist during the show, and had another song followed Perfect Day, it was to have been Sweet Jane."

I received these cds from Justin Cook some years ago, this is his review:
"I received this recording from Scott Zumsteg. It was originally recorded on HiFi VHS, and it has never touched an analog source. Sound quality and clarity is outstanding. Trust me, this recording is far better than any of the commercial bootlegs of this show. There are a few minor pops, some very light static during October (possibly why it was omitted from the commercial bootlegs), and a few sloppy track transitions. Nonetheless, this is definitely one of the three best U2 bootlegs I have ever heard."

This recording is really great and sounds really better than the various commercial bootlegs. It has a great hi end and you can clearly hear all the instruments, especially the drums elements. It is in its untouched raw form. This means that you'll find some flaws (as described by Justin) but this also means that any of the high frequencies are lost in any hiss or noise reduction process (like on Mountains and deserts or Mountains in a blue sky) resulting in a very clear sound. I don't know which generation was the VHS used to transfer to DAT, maybe Scott Z. knows the story... It has the last song 40 that fade out but it's several minutes longer that the commercial bootlegs, and it has the intro by the Beatles.

The French radio station clearly took their soundboard feed from Bobby Pridden's on-stage desk because you can hear the metronome that is sent to Kenney Jones' headphones during 'Baba O'Riley' and 'Won't Get Fooled Again' (it sounds like a cowbell, and it is very prominent in the mix).

The radio station's engineers had the mix very poorly balanced for the opening track, improved it greatly by the end of the second track, and had it very nice from track three onward (although from mid-way in the show the bass guitar becomes a little quiet and Kenney's kick drum dominates the bottom end).

A French DJ speaks between songs, which i suppose gives the show a broadcast-ambience that is cool in its own way; particularly when he introduces "Oo-Ahhrh-Yu".

The performance of "Who Are You" is, incidentally, the most catastrophic shambles; each member of the group commits a howler at one point or another, and Roger forgets the words of the opening lines just for good measure. Like many performances from this period: the worst is fascinating, the best is actually incredible.

The restoration of this FM recording has been extensive and involved, producing a highly three-dimensional dynamic sound from a source that has never circulated in great quality. People that have this show already will, i've no doubt, consider this an upgrade.

notes by the taper:
OK, here we are a FM broadcast of Iggy & The Stooges with James Williamson on guitar. Again, I dont get the best reception of WFMU even though Im pretty damn close to it, but it was coming in better today after some messing withthe antenna and the Beam Box, that being said, it is still a mono recording throughout most of it, stereo might have broken in at some points. Also, I heard some glitches throughout the broadcast and dropouts, they were all from WFMU's side of things, I think this show made it through pretty unscathed. Offensive words blurred out.

Notes by the taper:
This is a short BB King show and was performed after the Cannonball show I posted earlier. The tapes starts in the middle of the song 1. The soundboard isn't quite as full sounding as the Cannonball set but still it's BB.

This is from a reel to reel master soundboard. I got a chance to transfer some great mono soundboards from reel to reels in the early 80's. This is actually a Teac reel to reel to Cassette (top of the line Yamaha TC-1000 cassette deck from the 80's) and then transferred straight to my Philips CDR-765 deck. This is as close to a master generation as possible since the reels where sent off to a never-neverland surplus probably never to see the light of day from the original source. CD Burners didn't exist yet so I had to wait until they we're available to transfer this show This is a live soundboard that may or may not have been broadcast. I think you'll be pleased with the sound quality. Again, I used the top of the line Maxell tapes and transferred this to my Philips CDR-765 deck.
