Bill Graham s Fillmore East Last Three Nights, featuring major artists; Albert King, J. Geils Band, Edgare Winter, Mountain, the Beach Boys, Allman Brothers Band, June 1971. The Fillmore East opened in Manhattan in March 1968. Over the next three years it hosted almost every major rock artist of the era, as well as giants of soul, blues, folk, gospel and jazz. Bill Graham decided to close it in June 1971, but before doing so he assembled a remarkable 3-day bill featuring some of the most iconic and influential acts in America, spanning pop (the Beach Boys), blues (Albert King), rock n roll (the J. Geils Band, Edgar Winter, Mountain, the Allman Brothers Band) and folk (Country Joe McDonald a nod towards the venue s psychedelic roots). Recorded by Roy Martin using a set of Core Sound Stealthy Cardioid mics plugged into a Zoom H2n recorder. Captured from the front row orchestra pit, inches away from the monitors and three feet in front of Brian Wilson, as a 24-bit/48kHz WAV. Cool Edit Pro used for misc. edits, fade ins/outs and downsampling to 16-bit/44.1kHz. The large WAV was split using CD Wave Editor. SBEs were fixed ("-fixed" removed from the filenames) and encoded to FLAC (Level 8) using Trader's Little Helper.

This recording is not perfect.
-- There's significant volume fluxuations during the first song ("Do It Again") as I tried to get my levels without getting the attention of the performers or the heavy security presence.

-- There are also many strange anomalies that were inherit in the house mix. Remember that the immediate front row by the stage has the poorest acoustics. The guitars are very low in the mix that I captured. The vocals are upfront. I sacrificed an acoustically superior seat to be immediately in front of one of the legends of rock & roll - Brian Wilson. There were small monitors pointed at me, which the house feed was coming through. I was glad, because without these monitors, we (in the orchestra pit) would've never heard the vocals.

-- My mics were within inches of these monitors, but because of a close presence of security, I had to hide my equipment on occassion. So, forgive my poor mic technique. You'll hear occassional mic thumps, too. Sorry.

-- Some songs are louder than other. The car tunes at the end of disc one, for example, are louder than the songs just prior to it. Why? I dunno.

-- Mike Love's mic feed was significantly distorted. He had a cordless mic (everyone else had typical wired mics) and I think that was the reason why his, and only his, vocals buzz. You'll hear it, esp. when he speaking in-between songs. I was shocked the guy running the board was not aware of it, and didn't try to correct it in between sets. Either he was incompetant or didn't care. It's horrible during the introduction of "IJWMFTT" and "Forever."

-- Also, I had a middle-aged lady sitting next to me and she was having a good ol' time and can be heard in the recording. Oh well, she paid for her ticket and deserved to have a good time just like I did, in the front row.

The Hits just kept coming. Second night of the 50th Anniversary tour and the Beach Boys delivered a 2 hour show of songs from a wonderful catalog. I went mostly because who knows if you will ever get to these hit makers perform together again and especially because of Brian Wilson being there. Just a fun all around show. There was a twenty minute intermission so each set will fit nicely on a single cd. The show started almost without warning. I was not completely ready so you do hear a bit of rustling as I position my mics at the start. but it is finished before the real music starts.

This is one of the best finds that I have ever come across when it comes to bootleg recordings. The sound quality is a 10+. I still can't believe how good this sounds from 1967. Who ever put this together deserves an award. There are four shows total plus the promos for the upcoming shows. Everyone needs to get this. You won't believe how good this sounds. Plus, there is a lot of stage banter and you get to hear what the band was like during the period of the Smile sessions. Absolutely amazing.

Notes:

A nice recording of the latest incarnation of The Beach "Boys" even though Mike Love is the sole remaining original member. Once you get past that fact it is a very enjoyable show with excellent harmonies provided by the various band members. The average age of the crowd was probably 70 so needless to say there was hardly any standing during the whole show which made it a perfect taping/filming environment. Even though the audience source is mixed fairly low you can still hear a loud clapper in a few spots. Its amazing how he always seems to find me even though our seating section was virtually empty. Occasionally you can hear my girlfriend and I have a laugh or a few words observing the audience but its not too intrusive and mainly between songs. I would like to thank my girlfriend for putting up with my crazy taping escapades and also The Phog who bought these tickets for us.
