* - Track 4 is an instrumental take on Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor". There is no real virtuoso playing on this track (though Clapton, Allman and Betts were the most capable of any to do that), just clean guitar lines and a wonderful beat provided by Jim Gordon and Butch Trucks. Each guitarist takes turns playing. It is probably the most excellent guitar playing ever put on disc. It was taken from the night Eric and Duane met,and special guest (Dickey Betts,Berry Oakley and Butch Trucks) came into the studio to jam with the Dominos. Out of an unreal 15 hours of jamming, all of which Tom Dowd smartly put on tape

History Notes
A few uninspired days into the Layla sessions, Tom Dowd, who was also producing for the Allmans for their album Idlewild South, invited Clapton to an Allman Brothers outdoor concert in Miami, where he first heard Duane Allman play. After several hours in the studio earlier that day the band was sneaked into the show with the help of Dowd and sat between the riser and fans below. At the concert, Dowd distinctly remembers:
" Duane was in the middle of a solo; he opens his eyes and looks down, does a dead stare, and stops playing. Dickey Betts is chugging along, see Duane's stopped playing, and figures he'd better cover, that Duane must've broken a string or something. Then Dickey looks down, sees Eric, and turns his back. That was how they first saw each other."
The next day (Aug 27, 1970) Duane arrived at the Criteria studios about 3 o'clock and would quickly befriend Clapton; Dowd says their easiness with one another was instantaneous, saying they were " trading licks, they were swapping guitars, they were talking shop and information and having a ball, no hold barred, just admiration for each other's technique and facility. We got back, turned the tapes on, and they went on for 15, 18 hours like that. I went through two or three sets of engineers. "
After the jam sessions Clapton invited Allman to become the fifth and final member of the Dominos.

Comments: 
One of the best EC audience recordings from the 1970s, this is a must-have for any Clapton collector. The 1975 tour is legendary for EC's erratic, sloppy behavior, but this is one of the better, more focused shows I've heard from this period. I presume this was recorded with permission of the band with fairly professional equipment and multiple microphones -- the quality surpasses almost any audience recording from the 1970s and is frequently mistaken for a soundboard. 

It's unfortunate that there is no lineage for this -- if you have a known-generation recording, please post it! In the meantime, this is a good listen for even a casual EC fan who likes Clapton's 1970s material.

This one comes out of my own archives and originates from Jamie Oldaker's reels. A close friend got a number of shows directly from Jamie and I made a copy off his 1st gens in the mid 1980's. 

The most commonly circulating versions appear to be either be missing "Blues Power" entirely or it is cut. "Blues Power" is complete here and it's a scorching albeit somewhat mellow version. I'm not sure if this is the first time "Blues Power" has circulated complete but it is likely the first time from this low of a generation copy. 

Eric is full of piss and vinegar on this night, starting the show off by challenging a yelling audience member to "come up on stage and talk about it" followed by some expletives and then telling him "I'll have you...". This show also immediately precedes the unfortunate political rant at the Birmingham show two nights later which EC ended up writing an apology letter for printed in the September 11 edition of 'Sounds'. Something definitely had EC wound up the early part of this tour or perhaps just too much drink. 

The circulating version runs just a touch fast, this version is pitch adjusted to run at the correct speed. Samples provided as well as artwork for this new version...

'The * disc is a soundboard that claims to be from the evening following the Memphis gig at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama on July 29th. This is a previously undocumented and unreleased tape. There is no mention of the state, city, venue or date but it seems to be genuine. It has a beginning very similar to the July 20th Long Beach soundboard with the introduction and Clapton saying "Legs Al!...If we're all sitting comfortably we'll begin" before "Smile". Long Beach was used for a bogus July 30th New Orleans release on cdr, but the difference is that Clapton says "Legs Al" once instead of twice and doesn't say "oops a daisy" as he does in Long Beach. After doing a comparison with all of the known set lists from 1974 this is doesn't match any. WGPSEC (who this is I do not know) also can confirm this is, as far as he can tell, an unique tape so we can take this as face value.

The Alabama tape is very similar in tone to the other two in this collection, probably why they are all grouped together. It sounds like a high generation tape with some hiss present and overall sounding a bit dull. There is a cut before "I Shot The Sheriff" and a small one in "Tell The Truth". And also like the other two there are no encores present. The acoustic beginning is very short with fast versions of "Smile" and "Let It Grow". It sounds like Clapton is impatient and wants to go electric early. "This one's for Donner and Galadriel" he says before "Layla". "Willie And The Hand Jive" is paired with "Get Ready" as usual on this tour but the definite highlight of the set is "Tell The Truth". Clapton's jams are very inventive and he ends the song by playing The Beatles' "Norwegian Wood". "Let It Rain" is the set closer for only the second known time on this tour. It is a tape that will interest Clapton collectors because it is new and authentic and for that reason Three Smiles is worth having.'

One of the better 1974 shows available, both in performance and recording quality. Unlike many of the shows where the band (and their leader's) performance was uneven, this was one of those nights where everyone was at least articulate and coherent, if not "on fire". Rather than rote run-throughs of the setlist, there is some nice artistic expression here. At about 6:50 into 'Tell the Truth' the band goes into a funky vamp, which works out nicely, with a nice segue into "Hideaway" and the "Peter Gunn" theme into a spirited performance of "Ramblin' On My Mind". "Blues Power" also features some nice jamming by the band. Recommended.
