One of the truly seminal bands of British hard rock, Led Zeppelin took the structures of the blues, married it to the volume and impact of rock & roll, and created a hybrid that's been a major influence on literally thousands of hard rock and heavy metal bands ever since. A to Zeppelin: The Story of Led Zeppelin is an unauthorized documentary that examines the history and legacy of this most important group. The film includes interviews with road manager Richard Cole, touring partner Carmine Appice, producer Andy Johns, close friends Pamela Des Barres and Lori Mattix, and fans and compatriots from Bad Company, Foreigner, and the Yardbirds. Please note that this film was created without the participation of Led Zeppelin or their representatives, and features no music or performances from the band.

Notes:
The Flatlanders are celebrating the 40th anniversary of their first record with a summer tour and the release of a batch of demos recorded in Odessa, Texas, back then. Joe said the name of the record will be "The Odessa Tapes." This show at the Moody (where Austin City Limits is now taped) served as sort of a promo gig. There are a couple of early-band gems that made the gig for Ol' Mike: "Rose From The Mountain". from the first record, and "I Know You" from the 1972 live record. There's a house feedback squeal on "Hopes" and there were several mic/disc glitches that joeyjay had to edit out. Most are seamless, but there's a missing line in "The Highway Is My Home" - that had to come out, unfortunately. Other than that, the sound is pretty damn good, and so is the show. Go see The Flatlanders on tour this summer. As always, all thanks to Joe, Jimmie Dale, Butch and all the extended musical family for all the great nights of memories and tunes. Continued thanks to The Coin for the surrogate mics.

Notes:
For this show I tried out a pair of CSC Mics I had purchased but am on the fence when it comes to using them again because the sound came out sort of thin compared to what I actually heard during the show. The IEM feed is well balanced favoring Stevie's vocals and the backup guitar player and singers but when mixed with the AUD it really helps fill out the sound. There are a small minor hiccups during the show where there were a couple pops in the iem feed and I tried to edit them out as much as possible but they are still there.

The band has been stripped down a bit but in classics like Toussaint, Incident, Jingo and BMW/GQ still tight as hell. The way A Love Supreme is played appeals to me far more than in the past. Great to hear some teases of Every Step of the Way in She's not there. When I look into your eyes is, as on the Isley album, embedded in the last part of Are you ready people. As a bonus I've also added the soundcheck of the show and some scans of the artwork

Comments: This is one of two recordings I made of this show. The sound quality was really awesome where I was sitting/standing. However, there are a few spots that had to be patched from the other recording. There are two patches of about 10 seconds in "Nowhere Now" and one in "Pariah" where there were skips in the recording (which really shouldn't happen on a digital recording). Also, the first minute and a half or so of "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" was patched. The iPhone refused to recognize the mic's when I started recording for the 2nd set. I had to reboot the phone, which I probably should have done in the first place as that was probably the cause of the skips as well. Live and learn! This is why I usually run two rigs when I am doing experimental stuff like using my iPhone as a recording device! (The other recording was recorded using an iPhone as well, but that was from a clean reboot and didn't have any problems).

I decided to post this one over the AT831 source because I believe that most people will like this one better. I actually like the other one more, but the part where we were forced to stand didn't come out as good on that one, and the sound is more consistent throughout on this one. I think they both sound great overall, and I might be inclined to post the other want later if there is a demand for it. Overall, I enjoyed this show more than the Albany one. Usually, The Egg is the venue of choice but for whatever reason I think they sounded better here, and the show flowed better as well. There was a tight time constrain at Berklee, and Steven's between song banter benefited from the brevity! This is a full eleven minutes shorter with the same amount of songs. "Heartattack" in place of "Raven" saves 4 minutes but the other seven came from the shorter speeches. In fact, the "Permanating" intro was only about 2 1/2 minutes here compared to about 6 1/2 at Albany (for a 4 minute song).

There are many things to love about the ten years of touring Bruce and the band did since reuniting on stage in 1999, but high on the list is the staggering amount of material assailed. By the end of the WOAD tour, Springsteen had tackled some 280 songs, a number boosted considerably by the sign requests of the last two tours, especially given how many of those yielded one-off covers.

But even more compelling than live versions of other people’s songs are airings of little-performed material from Bruce’s own canon. It’s easy to forget that the 1999 tour was mounted in support of Tracks and rarities from the box did work their way into setlists to varying degrees, especially early on when such uber obscurities as “Car Wash” and “Brothers Under the Bridges” received their first and, to date, last airings.

Fast-forward to the end of the 2009 WOAD tour in Buffalo, and again Bruce pulls out first/only readings of several songs including the stunning River outtake (included on Tracks) “Restless Nights.” Steve might have been right all these years year, indeed.

For the hardcores, folks who saw dozens of shows over the last 12 years, these uncommon performances provided some of the greatest moments we experienced in those arenas. The genuine surprise delivered by a song you never thought you’d ever hear or hear again is one of the sublime pleasures of being a fan of an artist who has both an enormous back catalog and who isn’t afraid to mix up his set lists to revisit it. For us, there’s nothing more exciting than when Bruce steps to the microphone and says something to the effect of, “We don’t play this one much....”

Those words provide the title to our comprehensive 6-CD anthology. "We Don’t Play This One Much" gathers ten years of rarities from the once-played to the infrequently-played, all in one place. This set is all about the songs you haven’t heard that often and haven’t grown tired of, culled to create a listening experience that should be quite refreshing to anyone who has listened primarily to complete shows from any of the four tours.

You may wonder where we drew the line. The answer is somewhere around a dozen performances, any more than that and the song didn’t feel so rare any more, with just a couple of exceptions that felt like they would have been conspicuous by their absence given the other material included (like “Code of Silence.”) We've also included songs performed slightly more but new to the Springsteen live canon over the course of the decade.
