Welcome to Volume 4 of an exciting new master series featuring the master recordings of dime member "tapetyrant". The series will predominately feature captures in the Northeast and Southern California areas. We will touch on multiple genres with a strong focus on Jazz Fusion, New Wave and Rock.

Tapetyrant was an active taper in the 1980's and much of the 1990's before, like many of us, hanging up the mics. What he captured during that time is uniformly excellent quality and his master tapes have been safely stored, the first batch are in pristine condition. Some shows may circulate from lower generation copies but most have remained uncirculated until now and have not ever circulated directly from the masters.

Prior to DAT, the heavy lifting was entirely done by a Sony D5 with NAK 300's and taping was serious business, acquiring the best seats possible and working to keep neighbors in check.

Volume 4 captures Bryan Ferry at the Greek Theatre supporting his solo release "Bête Noire".

TapeTyrant was not quite as close as he prefers to be but the Greek Theatre slope was very beneficial to the capture. As with Joe Jackson we had another close screamer, this time a male and as with Joe Jackson he has been completely and seamlessly removed.

We'll let the samples speak for themselves regarding the quality!

Notes by the uploader:
this is a "sterile" sounboard recording. There is no real crowd noise present in the recording, so it goes almost silent between tracks, you can hear a bit of clapping. I am not a big specialist in BF recordings but I can say that this could be one of the best unofficial recordings of his up to date. I took this tape from the local torrent site and simply added info. So all credits go to drusilla2. According to him "the first 4 tracks were corrupted hence are not shared". I am amazed at how this guy shares his recordings since it is evident he was working with or simply was the soundguy @ the gig and if i'm not mistaken such recordings are out of question among sound engineers. They are recorded for the band but never shared. On the other handside I am sure this one and Elton John recording definitely made a lot of people happy. Unfortunately they are most likely to be sold by bootleg-selling sc*m and there's nothing we can do about it.

I received this tape 15 years ago from a friend who told me it was a copy of the original. He made one for me and one for himself. I wouldn't be surprised if the actual lineage was DAT>cassette>cassette. This is probably the case because there are a couple seconds of repeated content between side 1 and side 2 of my cassette (the drum hits before "Jealous Guy"), and I cannot detect any missing content anywhere else. Most likely, it was recorded to DAT since there doesn't seem to be any real break that would point to a "flip".

If it were originally sourced from DAT, I assume my copy was made from a cassette copy and not from the DAT, though I have no way of confirming this information.

I have made no attempts to "fix" anything. I simply joined the entire performance into one seamless file before adding fades at the beginning and end of each "disc." While I was tempted to remove hiss, I didn't want noise reduction to remove any additional information like cymbals, reverb trails, etc. Nor did I attempt to adjust EQ on my modest home studio speakers. I'll leave that to the pros, and keep this show as close to my source as possible. Enjoy.

Very good recording. B+/A- Arcimboldi Theatre has a very good acoustic especially in the galleries. 
1 h 40 m show for the good old Bryan Ferry still riding the tiger. 
They cut down "Beauty queen", "Where or when", "Oh yeah" and "Both ends burning" compared with the Austin gig in march. But compared to the last US show only "Beauty queen" was dropped from the set. 
I wish he would have played more songs from his solo career, from the last really good albums but it does not matter. The Ferry Boat has come into town! 
A very good concert, elegant and clever as usual. Hope to see him again. He'll turn 72 this year.

JEMS has seen and recorded Ferry and Roxy Music going back to 1976, the most recent being a fine 2011 set at the Beacon in NYC that we posted shortly after the show. This night was one of those weird ones where the recorded performance is better than the in-person one. Something felt a little rushed as I watched it unfold, and as much as I appreciated the crack young band (especially drummer Cherisse Osei) and how willing Bryan was to give them the spotlight (he quite literally sat out of it, stage left, on keyboards for at least half the show), the show only resonated deeply in a few moments, notably "Same Old Blues," "If There Is Something," "Virginia Plain" and a song I've been waiting since 1983 to hear again in concert, "Take a Chance With Me." 

But the recorded document is quite forgiving. While "More Than This" is inexplicably less than a minute snippet, many of the performances are hard to argue with upon further review. Bryan's vocals aren't as upfront as one might like, but fifth row seats delivered a nice, up-close recording. Samples provided. 

There are, however, a few caveats. That bane of all tapers, Wolf Whistle Guy, was seated directly behind me, and he lets his piercing note loose multiple times across the set. I tamed some of them with isotope RX, but artifacts remain. He was also the kind of jackhole who feels the need to narrate the performance, at full volume, for those seated next to him. There wasn't much I could do about that. There are also two brief instances where this otherwise wide stereo recording is crushed to mono, to mask a conversation directly into the mic. 

While all that is annoying as fuck, it still doesn't detract from a fine snapshot of Bryan Ferry circa 2014. JEMS was also on hand for Bryan's Seattle date a week earlier, but a speeding ticket caused us to miss the first several songs of the show. I've pulled the two variants, "Prairie Rose" and "Running Wild," and added them as bonus tracks.
