-Original tape was baked in "Susie Q", shell replaced and transferred on a Tascam 122mk3 via a Lucid ADA1000 Analog to Digital Converter directly to disc on a Tascam CDRW700 by John Jay Hance (johnjayhance@optonline.net).
-Cleanup performed by Peter G with Soundforge 6.0.
-EAC performed with correct offsets. SHN conversion with MKW & extra tracking of soundcheck (track1) & retracking of beginning of "Piece of My Heart" (track 12) CD Wave and EAC by Evan Bellaff (theelevan@yahoo.com).

This is Janis' last performance in New York and third to last performance, ever. Recording is rare but rough.

What you have in your hot little hands is the original edition of "Get It While You Can", which was pressed on yellow vinyl a very long time ago. I have the more recent reissue which runs a poor second on quality, and does nothing for listener. You have a great sounding Janis at top form to listen to, a rowdy audience, PLUS Mr. Asshole Announcer (who hasn't a clue of how to deal with them). It's simply great. 

This is a raw soundboard, you can feel the room shake if you turn it up loud enough. I had a decision to make, either to lose a little bass and kill the hum in the recording, or to let it stand. I've chosen to let it stand, I simply don't think it's intrusive enough to mess with. The tracks have been repositioned to make the modern listening experience a bit better:

This is the Janis Joplin show on June 28, 1970 at the CNE Stadium in Toronto, the first city to receive the Festival Express train.

Festival Express was unique among rock festivals - rather than being held in one location, it was staged in three - Canadian cities Toronto, Winnipeg and Calgary during the summer of 1970. Montreal was initially to have been the fourth city, but this concert was canceled as the date would have coincided with St. Jean Baptiste Day, and the city felt it couldn't provide adequate security. The idea was that rather than flying in to each city, the musicians would travel by chartered Canadian National Railways train, with the hope of fostering an atmosphere of musical creativity and closeness between the performers. The train rides between cities ultimately became a combination of non-stop jam sessions and partying, fueled by excess alcohol. Among the most memorable scenes depicting these informal jam sessions is a drunken jam featuring The Band's Rick Danko, the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, and Janis Joplin.

As the festival was taking place, there was a movement amongst North American youth centering on the notion that rock concerts should be
free. As at Woodstock, many kids showed up with no intention of paying the $14 admission. Despite the financial hardship this caused promoters Ken Walker and Thor Eaton, the train continued on, providing a rich environment in which the traveling bands could jam and interact. In 2003, a documentary film about this was released with footage both from the concerts and aboard the train. In the film, musician Kenny Gradney, who performed with Delaney & Bonnie, commented on the atmosphere during the tour: "It was better than Woodstock, as great as Woodstock was."

The traveling show highlighted several points in the transitioning effects of music in the post-idealism of the late 60s, as large groups
of protesters allegedly incited riots in order to get into the shows for free, and the promoters attempted to bring a traveling festival to a host of cities. Even the intervention of various Canadian police forces couldn't reconcile the resulting chaos.

While the promoters took a major financial hit, the tour was still a success, featuring now legendary performances by the Grateful Dead, The Band, Janis Joplin, and Buddy Guy, among others. The Dead were just transforming their sound from dense, jammed psychedelia to the
country/folk harmonies of Workingman's Dead and American Beauty; The Band's performance showed them at the very pinnacle of the their
powers; and for Joplin, this would turn out to be one of her last performances, as she died approximately two months later.

NOTES by the uploader:
This is a VG+ audience recording. On many places, the right channel was badly damaged, so I fixed it. Now you can tell there's a slight change in the sound when the fixing begins but that's all. I also had to remove a lot of gaps and litches from Disc 2. Other than these fixes, the original recording has been left untouched. The last two songs are from another audience source. Unfortuantely, it's of lesser quality, VG at best. Anyway, this is a really great show and the sound quality is really enjoyable so I'd recommand any music lover to get it.

First of all, thank you to Mesquite for originally providing this gem to us. For this remastered edition, I first rectified the speed which was slightly too fast and corrected the balance between the channels. Then I restored the bass and high ends, cleaned some parasite noises in the middle freqs and boosted Janis vocals and the brass a little. The whole thing sounds a lot clearer now. VG+ at least, I'd say.

This outdoor festival-style recording was made into the rarest Janis Joplin bootleg "Wicked Woman". I was *extremely lucky* to find a mint copy of this LP, and to be able to restore it for you. This is the very last recording of Janis and her band before her untimely death. Although not a great recording, it's quite listenable to. Janis is in great form. There's a great rendition of "Mercedes Benz" in this show. I have compiled all the different Dime member's artwork that was contributed to the original seed, and included it this time around. Please feel free to make your own art and add it to it!

The Monterey Pop Festival was held June 16 - 18, 1967 at the County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California, also the site of established folk, jazz and blues festivals. It was the first large rock festival, with around 200,000 people attending, and served as a template for the Woodstock Festival in New York State two years later. Many of the performers got their first big-time exposure at Monterey.
