I found this double silver disc which I bought ages ago whilst sorting out my record collection only recently. It had actually fallen down the back of a wall unit with about half a dozen other discs. 

It has the catogue Nos of RHCD54726 on the discs but no record label. It was recorded at the Rooftops Skyroom Buffalo NY 1983-07-26. 

So what can I say about this other than it is absolute quality. Straight from the mixing desk 10/10 
ignoring the first minute or so of the first track. The first song takes time to settle down as the sound engineer adjusts the sound levels on the mixing desk, after that it's as good as an official release, and to be honest it doesn't get much better than this.

It was an open air festival in Brittany and I had the chance to complete one of my childhood dream when "H" asked me to translate "I hate this ****ing rain" in French, and when he said that on stage ;-)

In the 10 years or so I have been trading I get asked for this show more often than any other, but being stuck on VHS tape I have let a lot of people down. I did have another copy on DVD but I remember that this copy was better quality. Having a few days spare I decided to move the show to DVD. I added a simple menu and a background image borrowed from a fellow trader (thanks matey) and here you are, your chance to relive that sunny Summer afternoon from 1986. It was a perfect day when everything just came together, well apart from the hours it took to get home as the M1 was shut. 

It seems wrong to be negative on my own release but I am going to. When I got this show on Video back in 2001 I was very disappointed. Not from the trader as or the unknown Gen quality but the way it was filmed. 

This Marillion gig as far as I know was the biggest headline show Marillion of any era ever played and I had hoped that I would be able to watch this Video and bring back all the memories of a great day. Once you start to watch this DVD you will see that the taper recorded most of the show "down the front" as we used to call it and for a large part of the recording you can see arms and heads taking up most of the screen. The taper I am sure did the best job they could and I do not want to disresprect them but compared to other shows from the same time this could be seen as a let down, especially with the great memories that all the fans have of this Concert. Please be aware of this before judging the quality. 

No official recording audio or video exists of this event even with big video screens on all day and all the other bands being recorded and played on the Friday night rock show with the legend that was the late great Tommy Vance. Back in Summer 1986 and hearing the supports bands being played each week I called up the BBC to ask when Marillion were going to be on. I got through to the BBC reception and ask for the Rock show. They put me through to the production team (That would never happen these days). I asked when Marillion were going to be on and the man on the phone said and I quote "Marillion declined to be recorded". Who or why this happened is anyone guess, I just hope that someone had the sense to leave the tapes running and took them back to the BBC. Maybe one day we might learn what realy happened, or if it was unofficially recorded these tapes may surface.

Original Notes: 
This is a bootleg CD from an open-air festival Marillion played in 1986. The headline act of this festival was Queen (who were later joined by Fish on stage), and this is a nice "Welcome To The Garden Party" set. This show was broadcast on German radio station SWF3, and this bootleg was sourced from there. There is some slight static at some point, but this was due to thunderstorms in some areas (I remember listening to this show at the radio, and in our region, the broadcast even broke down for some minutes), otherwise the sound quality is perfect.

Here you have the second installment of Col D. MASTERS again you have a excellent sounding show that has been traded for a while in poor quality. 

Notes by the taper
I remember this being a pretty big gig for the band at the time, after several supports at Friars this was their first headline in the Maxwell Hall, the biggest of the halls in the venue. The band were a bit edgy about this one, not just their first big gig on home soil but they knew that several A&R men would be in attendance, so with a big and very partisan audience guaranteed this was a great chance to impress in front of the record company people and prove they were worthy of a contract. 

I recorded this from dead centre, about 25-30 feet back from the stage. The Maxwell Hall had a bit of a tendancy for boomy acoustics and there is a trace of that in the recording but overall it's not too bad. 

At this stage, in Aylesbury at least, their audience was a really wide cross section. My lasting memory of this gig was everyone going complely mental in Margaret, with punks, skinheads and hippies all dancing together at the front. When the press eventually picked up on the band and pigeon-holed them into the prog rock bag they seemed to lose this pretty diservse audience.

This show is very special to me. It is simply the best Marillion show I've ever seen. And believe me, I've seen many in over 22 years. The atmosphere was special, Marillion were becoming huge in all Europe, things were going great, the band was in great shape. The summer 85 tour was their best ever, they were at their peak. Take a summer night in Italy, in an outdoor venue (not an arena really, despite the name!), packed with people standing everywhere, even on the trees around. Take the last gig of the tour and add TV crew filming the show. The band kicked its ass off, delivering an incredible show, and the audience was on fire.

This is Marillion in Bologna in 1985. Strange enough, the band did not come back to Bologna any more after this show. They hadn't rehearsed the full Misplaced Childhood album yet, so they presented side one only, leaving the rest of the set for some oldies which would disappear once a few months later. During Market Square Heroes, Fish wanted to show to television the audience, so he took a big light and pointed to it. This version is without doubt the best ever Market Square Heroes the band had performed!

This show was special because it was the last time Fish wore the make-up during a full show. Actually he took it off his face before the encores. He tried again during the Christmas tour the year after, but again removed it after the first couple of tracks.

I did not tape this show, but I recently gathered the master from the friend who taped it and transferred to my Hard Disk, that's why the recording equipment is unknown. I am glad I did not tape it, otherwise it would have turned out very bad. I was located in the middle of the crowd. The recording is excellent, crystal clear and clean. During Assassing my friend had to hide the microphone because of the crew, but for the rest the gig is great. Fish was simply giving his best, as well as all the band. Mark Kelly still had hair, and Steve Rothery had beard and was a lot more skinny. It was a great period for the

whole band!

It is no longer working and there is no link leading to the bootleg, but fortunately I managed to reach the owner of the site on the « Fish - Marillion (Derek William Dick) » Facebook page, who then sent me all the wav files from the bootleg via WeTransfer. I then converted these into FLAC files.

Tracks are not numbered, and three songs (« Kayleigh », « Lavender » and « Heart of Lothian ») seem to be missing contrary to the « Fishing Behind the Wall » bootleg of the same show (which is of inferior quality as the sound is less precise and lacks many of Fish ’s interactions). But most of the songs are present there.

Before playing Market Square Hereos, Fish promises that this show won't be the last time they play this location, and promises to come back on the next tour. Of course, the band never played there again with the then current lineup. Thus the title "Broken Promises", taken from Slainte Mhath.

Production Details
There are a few versions of this show in circulation. Some are in black and white, and some with washed out colors. Having recieved a first generation copy of this on PAL DVD, I found that it was badly afflicted by a very red tint; so much so that the show was unpleasant to watch. I'm guessing this has something to do with the way it was filmed or broadcast, as the equipment used in East Germany at the time was behind current western standards. I suspect there weren't many people with good recording equipment. Also, the broadcast standard there is Secam. The discs I had were PAL. So, somewhere along the way, this red tint was introduced. I believe this is why most versions of this show are in Black and White or washed out color, as people attempted to get rid of this overpowering red tint, but went a bit too far.

I used a red tint reduction filter myself. In order to apply this filter, I had to work on this video in uncompressed .avi format. This meant that once the filter was applied, I would have to re-encode the video. Since a re-encode was require anyway, I took the opportunity to convert to NTSC. It would have remained PAL if the reencoding had not been neccessary.

Applying this filter was a painstakingly slow process, requiring about 18 hours. I did a few run throughs, trying to get the proper amount of tint reduction. Not everyone will agree with my final choice. However, as I made the disc primarily for my own enjoyment, it is myself that I must ultimately please. There wasn't going to be any way to get the whole show perfect. I could have it one of two ways:
1. Normal color through most of the show, but some distracting red tint in spots.
2. Very little red tint anywhere, but washed out color in most of the video.

I chose option 1. To me it was preferable to have decent color throughout, even if this meant putting up with some red tint from time to time. Like I said, not all will agree with this approach, but there you have it.

Video for this is pretty clear. Also, the sound is quite nice.

Master - Audience recording from my old TDK-Sa C-90 Tape

This concert I taped with an AIWA walkman and an extra microphone (I can't remember what microphone it was). 

I taped this one from the middle of the audience about 15 meters from the left stage. The sound quality is very good +, sometimes better, it has the typical open-air-audience quality.

Here's my old master from another Marillion show those days. I never thought that I would have to see them again, but they also were on the bill of that festival and so me and my recorder
had to go through it one more time.

It was hot, very hot. Just a few toilets were placed and only a few showers. No fun!! It was very hard to tape over both days all of the groups. There were two stages, not much of a pause between one act and another and so sometimes I had to get to a conclusion whether I should better make a pause than to tape the next act. So I did not record Chris de Burgh, REO Speedwagon, Lone Justice, Joe Cocker, Mink de Ville and so on.
