New Haven: of all the unofficial Yes recordings, this is my favorite. The story is that the taper walked up to the soundboard with a reel to reel recorder and plugged in. The first-generation copy I was given is very clean.

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.

Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.

Notes by the uploader
This high-quality recording by Exploding Commode Productions was generously offered to me by the owner, and I performed a transfer and authored these DVD’s from the original tapes. This is the full, complete Yes Union concert as seen through a tripod-mounted camera and heard through stereo shotgun mics. The video was shot from a position on a balcony above a passageway, which provided a clear view of the revolving stage. Audio and video qualities are excellent. The eight-member line-up of Yes is in full-tilt mode after having toured for several months. The set has been pared down to a manageable number of tracks. Thanks to the excellent camerawork, the interaction of the band members and their joy of playing are plainly visible. And there’s a bit of a surprise when an unexpected guest makes an appearance on-stage during Roundabout. Put this one under the tree for your favorite Yes fan (yourself!) and have a ball during the holidays.

Notes:
I dug out the late, great Xanadu's video of this show, along with another angle he had in his collection. Both cameras were apparently in the same section, or close to each other. I have no specs on the cameras, I just know from the notes that both tapes are 1st gen. I don't think Xanadu ever circulated his angle, so this is completely new to the scene. The audio used on the majority was from the unknown cameraman, as Xanadu's tape suffered from a severe buzz. Most likely this happened when he transferred his Master to VHS. Unfortunately, the true Master is gone. Most likely re-used for another show.

What went wrong: this was my first time using a NLE video editing software, I didn't find out about image stabilization until I was done, I'm no audio technician and the cuts aren't smooth, my DVD creation software of choice crapped out in the middle of the project and I had to learn a new one, I could only find the first 80 minutes of Xanadu's angle so the rest is a single-camera shot.

What went right: syncing the sources was easier than expected, and every cut was about as good as it will ever get as far as minimizing camera pans and optimizing the best views of what was going on.

Comments: Okay, I know I said the last one was my last of the tour, but this time I really mean it :). This was a spur of a moment decision to go when I noticed a ticket available in the sweet spot. The venue is actually a tent type structure on the marina. It wasn't too hot outside, but it was very uncomfortable in the tent. There is a large circulating fan on the roof, but they turn it off before the show for some reason. The set was a bit shorter than the previous shows. "Starship Trooper" was dropped, but all of "I've Seen All Good People" was played. There were a couple of anomalies on this one. It takes a few seconds for Chris' bass to kick in in "Siberian Khatru", and the guitar mounted to the stand that Steve uses for acoustic sounds during "And You And I" didn't work, and Steve played the whole track on an electric guitar. "Five Percent For Nothing" was the best of the four so far, but still has a way to go.

Recording wise, this came out excellent once again. I couldn't have been luckier the way the four shows came out. Enjoy!

We open with the "Firebird," of course, and then from there, the Voice. Anderson's distinctive tenor, simultaneously delicate and powerful is Yes' one and only lead singer. It is the band's fifth (or first) musical instrument. Imagine Zeppelin without Plant, the Doors without Morrison, the Stones without Jagger. Yes without Anderson? Listen to the closing line of "Onward, the power of "Gates," the innocence of "Show Me." Only a voice as versatile as Anderson's can handle the vocal requirements of compositions as diverse as those.

Howe's guitar is the next defining Yes sound.  The acoustic break of "Clap" into "To be Over" bookends his talent over the years, but it's the lead fills in "South Side" and solos in "Trooper" and "Disgrace" that absolutely boggle the mind.

The other three elements close the circle. White and Squire work together seamlessy. Check out their masterwork, "Heart of the Sunrise." Yes has other keyboard players but Wakeman is the band's quintessential piano man. The standouts here are the back and forth with Howe on "South Side," the 1973 solo piece, "Cans and Brahms," "Turn of the Century" and, of course, the masterpiece, "Awaken."

The astute Yesfan will notice that these compositions come from the golden era (1970-78) when Yes' successful creative energy knew no boundaries. Our imaginary concert starts with "Roundabout" when the boys weren't tired of playing it. We hear "Tales" in its entirety and for those who weren't thrilled with that "bombastic" four song symphony, a lively "Awaken" rouses us from slumber. The show closes with the stunning MSG performance of "And You and I"...what, in retrospect, should have been Yes' final performance. All that's left are the two encores and the final notes fade into the nowhere. We love when we play, indeed.

Comments:
I love The Egg! Some may be familiar with some of my other recordings, back in 2007 I made one of the best audience recordings I have ever heard at this venue. Unfortunately, that band is no longer allowed on the sharing sites. You can imagine how psyched I was Yes was playing this great venue. It's small, it holds 982 people I think. It was probably only about 90% filled. But the acoustics are fantastic. I was sitting in the sweet spot, just a few seats over from where I was back in 2007. This was the second show of the tour, and the first full length show. I was a bit worried after reading the reviews from the first show, but I was pleasantly surprised. This was a good performance, with only a couple of early tour miscues. (The middle of South Side...I thought Geoff did a great job with it, but Alan seemed to be the one having the trouble, and of course Five Percent). There's also a buzzing noise on some of the keyboard sections of Heart Of The Sunrise, but that was present in the theater, and not an artifact of the recording. I was somewhat surprised at the inclusion of the two new songs. Not so much that they played new material, more about the song selection. They released "Believe Again" as a single, and it's available to stream on Spotify, so that's one a lot of fans may have heard, but they picked two other songs instead. They seemed to go over well, and they were well played.

The recording came out great I think. But that's what I expected at this venue. I was using a new battery box this evening, after having some trouble with my old one the last time out. It passed the test pretty well I think. This was a fun show, and this is a nice document of the evening.

Notes by TheTooleMan:
I'm sharing this rare - if not totally uncirculated - video on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of my first Yes concert, Atlanta, Georgia, September 30, 1972. Here are my thoughts and comments of that concert, which I shared many years ago on Forgotten Yesterdays:

"I've had several memorable magical moments (was that a Beatles album?) during Yes concerts. Hard to put them in a few paragraphs, and forgive me if I ramble, but here's a try at it:

"Close to the Edge concert, Atlanta, September 30, 1972: the band walks on stage as the Firebird Suite ends. Jon sneezed, excused himself, then led the band into I've Seen All Good People. (They switched to opening with Siberian Khatru later in the tour.) I was dazzled by the sound quality, especially contrasted with the twangy opening set by the Eagles, and by the quality of the band's performance. The crescendo of "Sharp... Distance" blew us across the auditorium. Movie cameras were set up in front of the stage; perhaps footage of the Atlanta concert was included in the YesSongs film. Later, a mirror ball dropped from the ceiling as the opening effects built up to my first audition of Close to the Edge. I was transported."

I realize now that my concert's opening with "All Good People" was the oddity, though it seemed normal to me for many years. You recall that the "YesSongs" film also opened with that tune. In Atlanta, "Siberian Khatru" was played after Roundabout, after which the band left the stage and returned for the encore, "Yours is No Disgrace."

If this little essay finds its way to someone who is sitting on the tape or film of the Atlanta 1972 concert, please share it... or anything else you may have in your possession. As with this previously uncirculated video, all additions to the Yes annals will be greatly appreciated.

Notes by the trader
I self did record the show back in 1984 from german television in 1984. About a year ago I did transfer it to dvd with my old JVC VCR. At that time the tape got stuck in my VCR when I tried to remove the tape from the machine. The tape got damaged and I lost 2 minutes of the concert ("It can happen" was the song) It sure can happen with old VCR's. When I got myself a new VCR I picked up again the tape and it looked very good and decided to do the job again. Only I had 2 minutes missing...
In the past I got a version from Demonoid but the video from that concert was not of the same quality. Anyway I used 2 minutes from that concert. From the site "YESsongs/songs of the earth" (thanks to Remy Menting for his info) I found out that there was a FM (stereo) recording from that same concert called "captured live" So it would be great to replace the mono sound with this stereo recording. But it was not on Dime or any other tracker. But I finally found the recording on "soulseek"

About the video:
Very good quality with mono sound (in these days I had no stereo recorder or the broadcastings
where in mono) I did some sharpness and colour adjusting.

About the audio:
To sync the audio with the video wasn't a easy job to do. The quality of the "captured live" files (flac) where excellent and where here before on Dime (mentioned in the info file that came with the download). According to the info file it was "captured" from a vinyl recording.(RKO Radio Productions: Broadcast Date 8-27-84). All the disturbing noises where removed all I had to do was to correct some bass "peaks". This was at the end of "starship trooper" here I did some EQ. The complete end of "City of love" and the beginning of "Starship trooper" where not on the files. Here I did use some audio from the Demonoid file. When I synced the songs I got the same problems that I had before by doing the Colosseum II DVD. But this time it was 10 times worse. By all the tracks I had to split the audio tracks in 6 different parts to get it right. When the beginning was good it was after 1 minute already out of sync.

About the DVD:
I made a complete new intro and outtro. Made a nice fullmotion song selection menu.
Sometimes you may think its not in sync...but that was also on the original broadcasting.
For example at the end of "starship trooper" when Chris Squire hits the bass the sound comes to late.
