Tangerine Dream - 1997-06-13 - Warsaw, PO (SBD/SHN)

(Soundboard SHN)

Tangerine Dream
June 13 1997
Sala Kongresowa Warsaw, Poland
Tangerine Tree - Volume 20 - Warsaw 1997

01 Waterborne (6'26)
02 Betrayal (Sorcerer Theme) (3'04)
03 Diamond Diary / Escape from Shadowland (5'06)
04 Sundance Kid (6'23)
05 Silver Scale (8'16)
06 Warsaw in the Sun (4'43)
07 Exit (4'36)
08 Stratosfear '95 (8'16)
09 Dolphin Dance (5'13)
10 Logos '88 (7'19)
11 Le Parc (L.A. - Streethawk) (3'52)
12 The Blue Bridge (4'03)

Tangerine Dream's gig in June 1997 was the last concert of their European tour in spring 1997. The first set of that show (the so-called 'Vintage Set', consisting of older compositions for the most part) was broadcast by the Polish FM radio. A remastered version of excellent quality of this broadcast can be heard on Tangerine Tree Volume 20: Warsaw 1997. The track list is slightly different to the set that was recorded during the London concert in November 1997 and released officially as Valentine Wheels. Thus, the Warsaw record is a nice counterpart to the album Tournado, which features the second set (the 'Modern Set') of the tour, as recorded in Zabrze in April 1997."

Performed by Edgar Froese, Jerome Froese, Zlatko Perica and Emil Hachfeld.
Produced and released by the tadream discussion list (P) 2003.
Polish FM broadcast recording remastered by 3N. Thanks to Keen Auricle.

01 Part Two (39'44)
02 Encore (12'49)

"A decade ago a shortened version of this concert was released as part of the 3 Tier Dream CD bootleg box, called Analogue Days. The Tangerine Tree recording is complete except for the encore, which gets cut off after thirteen minutes. Most likely the person who recorded it ran out of tape. On this particular evening Chris Franke had some obvious problems with 'taming the beast', his sequencer. But nevertheless the band and the audience enjoyed it (except Franke maybe :-) and the beginning of disc two you can hear someone shouting "Macht nicht so lange Pausen, ihr Banditen!" ("don't take such long breaks, you bandits!"), at which Edgar holds up his hands before launching into the pano introduction." (Tangerinedreamer, July 2003)

Filmed: 1976
Director: Wolfgang Kresse
Starring: Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, Peter Baumann

Comments: German TV film, also shown on Spanish TV in 1976, this is a film all about TD which includes informal interviews and concert/studio footage, most of which seems to have been done exclusively for the film. The interviews are in the German language. The street name in the title refers to where Edgar Froese used to live in Berlin (apparently Klaus Schulze lived on the same street at the time) and is now the site of the TDI offices.

I received this in a trade a few years ago. It also contained bonus material of the Pagart Przedstawa Warszawa Concert from December 10, 1983. This material has been removed per Dime's policy as the audio from this concert has been released on the "Poland" live release.

This DVD shows TD in their prime with plenty of close ups of their massive synth setups. Even though the interviews are in German, it's worth having for the unreleased music they play for this special.

The video quality is very good although there is some pixelation during the darker moments which doesn't detract from the overall viewing experience.

There is a basic menu but no chapters. Artwork is included.

notes:
A tape copy of an audience recording which was purchased at a record fair in England, just five days after the concert took place. Great sound quality except for a minor background noise which you can hear on the more quieter passages. This is part of the recording, not something that occured during the remastering. I had another Birmingham tape of lesser sound quality, and it was there too. The music is pretty much identical to that of Laguna Hills 6.6.1986 (Tangerine Tree 24), except that TD left out the 'Pilots of Purple Twilight' introduction, and that they played 'Cool Breeze of Brighton' (also known as 'Vermillion Sands') insted of 'Ride on the Ray'. The second encore is the great 'Mothers of Rain' and I like this early version even better than the one which can be found on the 'Optical Race' CD. One of the greatest tracks ever." Tangerine Dream - 1980-01-31 - Berlin, DE (DVDfull pro-shot)

(DVDfull pro-shot)

Tangerine Dream - Live from the Berlin Wall, East Berlin Palast der Republik, GDR 1980-01-31 First Time Ever 5.1 Surround-Sound Matrix NTSC DVD with added visualizations - A Doinker/MOB/TheTooleMan Consipiracy - Awe-inspiring - Don't blame us if you see God or Allah while watching it!

It's all true, too... this DVD has the quality of something you'd go out and buy. It's also optimized 16:9 for wide-screen televisions.

Before we get started - this is the as-yet unreleased portion of this evening. For the rest of the show, try the commercial release "Pergammon". Please support Tangerine Dream!

For years it has been known that there have been two versions of this show: a 1:1 transfer from the now-lost soundboard tape, and the FM broadcast. The soundboard version has been available through the Tangerine Tree for years, but the FM cast is much more widely known from the great German vinyl bootleg 'Staatsgrenze West'.

I have three copies of the vinyl, including the ultra-rare numbered first edition on red vinyl. There was a funny thing about it - the soloing instruments were very loud, especially during the great jam opening the second side, but nothing else was audible. I only received the soundboard version a couple of years ago, only to get my hopes dashed for a better mix. Oh, there are other instruments in there all right, but the soloing instruments exist only as faded echoes and the TT version runs too fast. The sound quality of both sources was very close. Quizically, both versions are in fully-separated stereo, meaning that the original setup must have been quadraphonic.

Hence an idea was born: to combine the two versions and to make a 5.1 surround-sound mix. To make this happen, I sent fresh transfers from the red-vinyl edition of 'Staatsgrenze West' to audio restoration whiz MOB, where he speed-corrected the TT source and was able to totally synchronize the sound with the vinyl version. The restored four-channel was then passed to TheTooleMan for 5.1 audio DVDr authoring.

To my total surprise, TheTooleMan figured out a way to add visuals to the audio that synch with the music. Some of them are WMP-like, many of them are not. It's simply a mind-blowing experience to watch. I've attached a contact sheet in the comments section, please check it out.

Even if you don't like or have never heard of Tangerine Dream, this show is a great place to start.

Great show once again by TD of the new era. Be informed that every now and then there are cell-phone interferences (picked up by the mic) audible throughout the show (most notably during Tangram). It was nicely cleaned by iZotope's RX5 but every now and then you can hear some buzzing/rumble in the background. Overall not too distracting. Enjoy some great music by Tangerine Dream (Der Mond ist aufgegangen is a must hear!)!

Notes:
This is really a rebirth for Tangerine Dream !

This line-up, chosen by founding member Edgar Froese the year before his passing, makes justice to the original spirit of the band: no more cheezy saxophone, no more uninspired drums, no more rock guitar solos, they go back to the electronic sound that the band had when they were pioneers, but sounding fresh and modern at the same time. Pulsating rhythms, hypnotic music, and Hoshiko Yamane's great violin adding beautiful melodies or haunting strangeness.

This line-up makes a gift to their audience at each show: the encore is a long electronic improvisation (called "Session"). It is different each night. You should check this "Session" here, lasting 45 minutes, and one of the most inspired they played! What is remarkable too, is the absolute silence in the audience when they performed this session. Even before the first sound, and until the very end of the last bass fading note, the public is silent. It's almost a religious experience, and the audience is very respectful to the band and the music.

Details:
The purpose of this 2-CD set is to compile all the Tangerine Dream music that was released outside the regular albums during the ‘70s and the ‘80s, from the best possible sources and with the best possible quality. All the tracks here are therefore taken from samplers, compilations, singles and promos that were released by the band during that period but are out of print since a long time, and are presented chronologically by date of release.

Versions from singles or compilations that are just extracts from the regular album versions were not considered. Alternate versions of album songs were included only when they were a different mix, an extended version or an edited version.

Each track was carefully remastered, with manual cleaning of vinyl crackles and with special attention to ensure a correct speed (some of these rarities available on bootlegs often run too fast).

Additional notes for some tracks:
Ultima Thule Part 1 is the original 1971 mix, not the 2000 remix available on some recent compilations.
Oszillator Planet Concert was recorded live on 21Jun71.
Overture is part of the unreleased "Oedipus Tyrannus" project, recorded Jun74.
Stratosfear and The Big Sleep In Search Of Hades from the Stratosfear single are edited versions.
The single version Monolight is a remixed version.
The extended version of Dr. Destructo has a portion of the original track duplicated to make it longer.
The 8 music tracks from the Risky Business audio movie kit are actually the following:
- Track 1 is an alternate mix of No Future
- Track 2 is an alternate mix of Lana
- Track 3 is an alternate version of Guido The Killer Pimp
- Tracks 4, 5 and 6 are short sound effects
- Track 7 is Edinburgh Castle
- Track 8 is an alternate mix of Love On A Real Train and corresponds to the closing credits
The Dream Is Always The Same and Love On A Real Train from the original soundtrack LP are alternate versions compared to the soundtrack CD versions.
The three versions of Warsaw In The Sun are different remixes.
The single version of Streethawk is a remix.
Horns Of Doom was made available in 1986 but is actually a 1980 recording.
The single version of Tyger is a slight remix, with more percussions during the chorus.
The extended version of Alexander Square is based on the album track Alexander Square Reprise, but with an extended central part.
