Review:

I came to realize, you just can't go wrong with Zeus. What a show! I seriously think this is one of the best performances of the 1972 tour (Boeblingen is up there also). IMHO, you get the best One Of These Days on this show. This concert comes from the original master tape. Very very nice indeed.

This was one of those recordings that grew on me the more plays it got. The sound was not too hot as the Amphitheater can do to you. But this really ended up a great listening show. Thumbs up on this performance. The show was in the round (revolving center stage) and I believe this was the first of two nights. There was a power failure that lasted 4 or five minutes. The main man from Celebration Flipside (promoter) comes out on stage to explain what had happened.

Notes:
The fidelity of the show is as it was broadcast (actually a little better), although the mix is not that good. Let me explain. The signal that was broadcast was taken either from the mixing desk, straight into the transmitter, or the monitor feed that the band hears on stage was used. I couldn't tell which feed, but it was definitely mono which leads me to believe that it was the pre-amplifyed house feed that was used since most clubs had mono mixing desks back in 1981. I say the feed is mono, because it was fed through some sort of pseudo-Stereo equipment. All the highs and midrange are in the right channel, while all the lows and more midrange are in the left channel. Taken together, they approximate a stereo "feel". I tried a couple of different ways of mixing both channels, but they only sum to mono, and the sound ends up being rather muddy. I'm not certain if the radio station, WHFS, was even broadcasting in stereo back in 1981.

Anyway, getting back to the actual mix of the show. I think that whomever was running the board was (i) inexperienced, or more likely (ii) rather drunk. Simon's vocals are not very loud in places, while Andy Taylor's are quite evident (as you will notice). I did do some level matching, as each song was either louder or quieter than the one preceding it. The entire show was re-EQed to bring out the parts that were hard to hear, but without spending a LOT of money, this is the best result. I think this is a pretty historic show, since the only other shows from 1981 that were recorded (or broadcast) were incomplete
shows. Granted the 1981 Hammersmith BBC recording is a complete show, it was performed with the intention of future broadcast, and not many chances were taken on stage.

The last track is an on-air interview done with Simon, Andy and Nick prior the show.

It IS a bit strange, I have to admit, since one-third is AUD, while the rest is a stunning SBD. Part of this show was also broadcast as an FM, but this came to me some years as a non tradable SBD. Luckily, my source gave me permission to share it now. The SBD, however, was incomplete, but I also had an AUD source, which I added on CD 3 to make it a complete show.
Some of you might object against this method, but then just leave out CD3 in your download. I could also upload the entire AUD, but listening to the quality of CD 1 and 2, that would ne superfluous, I think. The show itself rocks! Dealer/Spanish rose wasn't played that often and Incident alone is worth the download!! On CD 3 a lot of improvising with some very recognizable riffs. Bo Diddley, La Bamba, Cocaine...those were the days! Unfortunately Winnig is also there.... :))

This was taped off the original broadcast on the TNN cable affiliate in Pinellas County, Florida. Some of the songs begin after the start, and some are cut before the end. The songs by Charley Pride and John Fogerty are mostly cut. As the source tape is more than 26 years old, there's been some degradation, but the video and audio are still fairly decent. I'm sure there are better quality transfers out there, e.g., the Dylan performance recently uploaded to HungerCity by eddiethecat, but this should do for those who want to see some of the other performances.

Short but sweet this one, and I've not come across it before (though the rip of the music is in fairly wide distribution as an audio). I guess one has to bear in mind that the world wasn't quite as global (sic) as now, back in 1990 - so getting a South American PAL tape transferred to UK PAL would inevitably lead to some degradation - but to be honest, it's a pretty decent transfer.  Bit grainy, but very watchable. You get a few station idents and track names, but no adverts (phew!).
