It's a great performance...stupidly I didn't go...I did go to the next year's comparitively ok gig at the Phoenix Festival (nothing wrong with it but I don't feel it reached the heights of this one). The crowd reaction after All The Young Dudes is tremendous! Thousands cheering "Bow-ie! Bow-ie!"

The first 12 tracks are from a mixing desk recording, the last six are from the UK Radio 1 FM broadcast.

I received this show on a vhs tape back in 2003. This was recorded directly from the live feed broadcasted on the big screens inside the venue and is directed by swiss tv. The audio was extracted from that videotape, it is soundboard recording which is not the case for the torrent you mentioned.

This is NOT the FM broadcast. It was taken from a "Reference Tape" of the complete performance. It was recorded to document the 1983 Serious Moonlight Tour.
A planned double album never saw the light of day. "Modern Love" from this set was used on 1983 EMI single EA 158(UK)/8177(US).

The last 57 seconds of "China Girl" was lost during a sloppy transfer to cassette in 1995. This has been repaired using a clip from the FM broadcast.

Bassman's comments:
A very good CD! It is recorded off the LP MONTREAL 1983, and still with some of the songs repeated twice. The cover is uninformative. Excellent sound quality, but why a tripple CD?

Bassman's comment on "Montreal 1984-4LP (part of) :  Some of the songs are repeated and that is because two FM broadcasts have been used.

My comments
this is my most beloved David Bowie Boot-CD. As it comes from LP, it has the rich audio-quality I like the best! The tracks are not in the correct running order, just as on the 4LP set - there is no " CRACKED ACTOR" and no second "CHINA GIRL"  as stated on the LP.

This show occurred on day one of the four day Move 2002 Festival. Suede opened for Bowie and during their set the heavens opened and we had torrential rain. Everyone thought it would be a wash out. Magically as Bowie took to the stage the rains stopped.

Not to be confused with the silver called 'Trouble in Rome', this is indeed my master tape. 

This concert is well known for being the shortest Bowie full performance. At one point, after exactly one hour of live set, Bowie left the stage. Everybody thought that he would return for the encores, but it was not the case: Bowie had already left to come back to his hotel! 

Bowie's management never wanted to give any explanation about this, since the singer was contracted to play 100 minutes. But a few speculations can be done: first of all, the audience was far below Bowie's normal standards: 4,000 people attending a show in a stadium that can hold more than 60,000! Second, the fight with the photographs, who were allowed to take shots during the first song only (instaed of two, as usually happens). As a protest, the photographs threw their photo passes on the stage while leaving at the end of the opening track. 

The recording is quite good. As always, italian radio stroke again, putting an idiot DJ to comment all the tracks. I have removed all the comments by crossfading all tracks. I only left the final comments at the end of Heroes, where he's saying that he's pretty sure Bowie would come back for the encores, even giving the names of the songs he would perform later. Bad forecast!

Robin Mayhew who was the sound mixer on the Ziggy Stardust tour has released his version of the famous last Ziggy concert. The recording is complete including Jeff Beck and is straight from the soundboard. This is the only surviving recording he has with Bowie. He taped all the shows, but reused the tapes the next day. Therefore only the last show survived. He is selling selfmade CDRs for £12 (UK) and £15 (International) at his website.

Only Mick and Suzie (later) Ronson knew of Bowie's decision to kill of his Ziggy persona that night. I believe Suzie must have told stage manager Peter Hunsley at some point after the interval as he alerted me via the stage to mixer intercom giving me the news. It came as no real surprise to me and quitting while ahead seemed the perfect and logical way to end something which would soon have to become repetitious.

Recorded directly from the sound console. Engineered by Robin Mayhew of Ground Control. This recording was made on a portable cassette machine on the night of the show, transferred to reel to reel in 1976 and to CD in 2008. The only studio engineering done on my recording is to the first part of Wendy Carlos's March from Clockwork Orangebecause the original tape was 

slightly stretched (note you can hear Ronno join in with a couple of chords at the end) and the attenuation of a feedback howl during the opening song Hang on to Yourself.

This posting is done with permission from Robin Mayhew. A lot of thanks goes out to him for giving us this Christmas present at Bowie Station. This is a unique and unaltered recording of what the Ziggy Stardust tour sounded like.

This CDR was released in August 2015 and due to the nature of the recording, and the cheap price, I made a promise to Robin Mayhew not to share it on Bowie Station unless he accepted it.

4 months on, the recordings "news value" has passed and at least one bootleg company has pressed their own version selling it for twice the original price. Therefore Robin Mayhew has agreed to let me post the recording to probably avoid some people buying the overpriced bootleg versions and that others might order the CDR set from him when they first hear the quality of the recording.

I was told by Robin Mayhew to tell that he is now signing the inner sleeve of the CDRs he is selling.

Ex sound after some EQ. The ratio of the AUD Matrix in the mix is very low. The SB recording has some parts of the concert missing which are complete in the AUD Matrix. The missing parts are:

The reason why I made this Matrix not only is that I wanted a complete show but also the sound of the SBD for me is a bit dull and very dry. So by adding this small portion of the AUD Matrix makes the sound wider and adds a lot of live feeling which for me is very important for a live recording. For instance it comes out very clear that by a big part of the audience the slow and contemplative synth tracks from Lodger and Heroes are booed which was typical for the tour. Last but not least the original vinyl rip by Bluemooner has a lot of clicks and crackles which I removed.

Now here comes a real sensation....a new November 2013 bootleg from Japan features the 1st half of the last European 1978 concert of David Bowie in soundboard quality. 1 song from this SBD source was previously released on "bootleg", but the rest was uncirculated outside of the "important collectors" circles. They didn't want money to be made on it, or something.... Well; if I had been getting to listen to this show for free (via torrents/trading) I obviously would not had been purchasing this Japanese bootleg now. And there are far worse things than the "bootlegers" around as far as ethic issue and "undeserved money" is concerned. Maybe one's "moral stands" could be used for something less navel-gazing than hoarding great recordings? Anyway, after 35 years of waiting, this London recording is available to the "common guy" for enjoyment. Thanks to the person who made this available to the public. Quality here is VG-EX SBD for the 1st half of the show. Great performance, and also: the only performance of "Sound And Vision" in 1978 (as far as I know). There's very few recordings of Bowie's terrific 1978 tour available in SBD quality. I can only think of 3, all of which are incomplete: Tokyo, Bremen and Dallas, plus the offical 2LP release "Stage". 2nd half of this bootleg is taken from an audience source. I don't know who taped that one. But in October 23rd 2013, a torrent was shared on MWP that featured this same show, taken from an audience recording (almost the same day as this bootleg was released). I am not a member there, but I've been told it was uploaded that day. Strangely enough, that "tape tranferred torrent" had the same "title" as this Japanese bootleg, allthough the torrent didn't feature any SBD recordings. I will include a little info about this share (I have been sent the info file of this torrent by someone) here, allthough I don't know if it's the same source as disc 2 of this torrent here.The uploader wrote: "Cassette of unknown generation -> transfer via Onkyo tapedeck TA-2330 -> Magix Music Cleaning Lab (remaster/edit) -> FLAC (44,1 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo) -> MWP [...] Unfortunately my tape starts in the middle of "Heroes", so not only half of this song but also Warszawa is missing. The sound of the tape is in my opinion even better than the MSG tape as it has also a quite good bass. So I just improved the treble a bit and made some sound level corrections. [...] Nevertheles a very good sounding recording. Uploaded to MWP by learm 2013/10/23" So, many thanks to mr. learm. The quality of that capture is listenable. Nowhere as good as the SBD source obviously, nor as good as the best AUD captures of 1978 (Vienna, Gothenburg, etc) but surely among the better 1978 captures, stil. And also many thanks to the person who spread the SBD recording outside the "circles of the few". I would have credited you if I could.
