Notes
This wonderful and rarely seen concert comes from a bootleg DVD acquired in Germany last year in a cheap bookstore, out of all places. The bootleg's title is "The Beast In Me - Live in New York 1994", and it contains no further info regarding the exact location, date etc. After a little digging I can confirm that the above details are correct, and that this set was probably shot for broadcast at VH1 at the time. There's no channel logo stamp here or any other identifiers. Also, the end credits have been pasted over.

The whole thing was shot in B&W and it gives a special and personal insight into the early days of Cash's American Recordings era. As this footage was never officially released, I thought it was about time to let more people enjoy this gem. The video quality is awesome, probably a very early generation copy of the master. Screenshots follow in the comments below.

19) Johnny Cash “Buy Savings Bonds” spot
20) Swing Low, Sweet Chariot
21) Guest Star Outro

Country Style USA was a radio program syndicated by the US Army Band and Recruiting Services and broadcast as a recruiting tool for them.

Produced by the U.S. Treasury Department in the 1940s and 1950s as a public service program, Guest Star features a different often top-name "guest star" (singer, actor, comedian) each week to promote the sales of savings bonds

previoulsy circulated with incorrect dates of 1958 & 1959. listening to talk n these and doing a bit of digging around determined to be earlier broadcast than originally circulated as

*13 . Get Rhythm " Our Latest Release on Sun" - recorded 1956
released as the B side of Walk The Line - April 2 1956

difficult to pin down an actual date on this - the website http://www.otrsite.com/logs/logc1075.htm starts at episode 39 broadcast 07-05-1956 - these would have been recorded at least a couple weeks before broadcast - it is very possible that a May - June 1956 recording date is correct here since that would be correct time in regards to a latest release

1959-06-28 Guest Star best guess per http://www.otrcat.com/guest-star-radio-p-1350.html

REMOVED: Johnny Western, Gordon Terry, Claude Gray, Rose Maddox

Notes:
Johnny Western, who emceed this 1961 show, would later become part of Johnny Cash’s band. Roger Miller, who had already written hits for Faron Young, Ray Price, Ernest Tubb, Jim Reeves, and George Jones, was just getting started as a performing artist. Fiddler Gordon Terry joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1950 and played with Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys. His biggest single, “Wild Honey”, charted in 1957. Claude Gray’s career was hot in 1961: "I'll Just Have a Cup of Coffee (Then I'll Go)," was a crossover pop hit at that time. George Jones, still basking here in the glow of his 1959 hit “White Lightnin’”, would soon move away from his honky-tonk, rebel image: His smooth ballad “Tender Years” was Number One for seven weeks later in 1961. Rose Maddox (formerly of the fantastic hillbilly band Maddox Brothers and Rose) had five Top 20 hits in that year, including both sides of the 45 “Kissing my Pillow” and “I Want to Live Again”, which are performed here. Finally, Johnny Cash performs his hits, in- cluding “Luther’s Boogie”, which, interestingly, was the highest charter of all of them.

Total running time: 68 minutes and 58 seconds.

Tracks 1-2, and 7-16 taken from the 2002 broadcast from my own recording (see note below).
Tracks 3-6, and 17-21 taken from the 2006 broadcast as torrented on Dime early 2010 by demamey (#291635) (thanks!).

Track 16 is incomplete because it was at the end of the radio broadcast from 2002. About one minute into the song radio DJ Oscar Smit starts talking while the music continues. He talks for about 50 seconds, and then another 6 seconds of the music is heard just before the song and the radio show ends. I have cut out the talking, and with some mixing and (cross) fading created a (imho) better ending of the song. As between tracks 4 and 5 plus tracks 8 and 9, I have also done some crossfading between tracks 16 and 17 to have a contineous recording. I'm pretty satisfied with the result to be honest. You can decide for yourself of course. If someone's interested in my complete, untouched recording including the short pieces of DJ banter, to get the full scope of the original broadcast, let me know. These pieces are missing from the recording as torrented on Dime by Kanzan early 2010 (#291971) and recently reseeded by SpackTacular (#493736).

Tracks 1-2, and 7-16 taken from the 42nd Dutch VPRO "Nighttrain" 747 AM radio broadcast / FM cable radio broadcast, April 12, 2002.
Tracks 3-6, and 17-21 most probably taken from the Dutch KRO "Zomerfestival 2006" FM radio broadcast, August 22, 2006.
