George Harrison was famously averse to performing in public, having only embarked on one full-length (disasterous) tour in 1974 in the twenty years following the Beatles' breakup. Lured out of retirement by Eric Clapton, he played a two-week tour of Japan in late 1991 backed by EC and his touring band; despite rumors of a broader North American and European tour, no further dates were scheduled.

With the exception of this one. This was a charity event for the "Natural Law Party" at London's Royal Albert Hall the following spring; George played a somewhat truncated (95 minutes) version of the Japan setlist, augmented with guests Joe Walsh and Gary Moore to open the show. Eric Clapton was unavailable to reprise the role he'd played in Japan, so Mike Campbell (of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) filled in competently. Other guests during George's set included Joe Walsh on "Roll Over Beethoven," and Gary Moore and Ringo Starr on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

Following this show, George withdrew into seclusion again. He performed at "Bob Fest" in New York later that year, and guested with Ravi Shankar on a VH-1 special in 1997, but this was his last headlining appearance. He ultimately died of lung cancer in December 2001. (Many thanks to commenter "Marc911" for the additional detail included above.)

In terms of sound quality, it's not the best recording but certainly good -- and more than acceptable considering the historic nature of this show. Dynamics are good but not great, the overall mix is solid, and there's not really any close-mic audience interference to distract from the listening. The taper was either a ways back from the PA or not in a good taping location, so the recording sounds a bit distant. (Given that I'm holding a 1992 recording to 2013 taping standards -- for the era, it's very good.)

An exceptional collection of outtakes, demos and alternate mixes. This package includes a booklet containing detailed track information, rare photos and a peek at George's personal guitar collection.

Liner Notes:
After spending some time with Mr. McCartney last time around ("Good Times Comin'", Vigotone VT-121), it's time to turn our attention to the quiet Beatle, George Harrison, with this collection of his better outtakes and demos. Appropriately, our collection starts off with "The Pirate Song", which was recorded for "Rutland Weekend Television" in 1975. Collectors will note that this is much better quality than previously available tapes of this performance. This is followed by a series of acetates. "Bangla Desh" and "Deep Blue" come from a tape of acetates which were retrieved along with the original multi-track for "Deep Blue". Unfortunately, we were unable to transfer the multi-track for this CD because of the condition of the original tape. The version of "Miss O'Dell" was obtained courtesy of the lady herself. Note that in this version George gets all the words right. Next up are a couple of demos, the first is "Dark Horse" (the only performance in which his voice isn't shot!), followed by a tune given to Jesse Ed Davis to record in 1972, "Sue Me Sue You Blues." "Mo" written in honor of then Warner Brothers president Mo Ostin's 50th birthday is possibly the highlight of this collection. It was recorded in 1977 and slated for possible inclusion on the George Harrison album and later the Best Of Dark Horse album. In both instances Mo Ostin asked George to remove the selection. It was issued recently in a very limited promo only 6CD set given only to Warner rothers employees. George plays all the instruments himself on the next track, a demo of "Life Itself" issued originally in 1992 with the expensive collector's edition book Songs By George Harrison 2. The next two tracks were recorded in Largo, MD on December 13, 1974 on George's 1974 tour of North America; "Hari's On Tour (Express)" was another track issued with the book Songs By George Harrison 2 while "For You Blue" came with 1988's Songs By George Harrison. In another record company blunder, George's 1980 album Somewhere In England was rejected by Warners for not being commercial enough. Accordingly, four of the best cuts were omitted from the official release. "Sat Singing", "Lay His Head" and "Flying Hour" are sourced from remixes done by George and included with his song book Songs By George while "Tears Of The World", also remixed, comes from Songs By George 2. Also from that source is "Hottest Going In Town", originally recorded for "Shanghai Surprise" in the mid-80's. In a similar vein is "Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea", which appeared on U.K. TV on the program "Mr. Roadrunner" in 1992. Next, we have a couple of outtakes from George's work with The Wilburys. "Maxine" was left off their most recent offering and would have been George's only solo song while "End Of The Line" is an outtake from their first album. Finally, we close our collection with George's classic "My Sweet Lord". This is the 45 mix, shamelessly lifted from a rare Capitol promo (where it was undoubtedly placed by accident!).

BACKGROUND NOTES
Harrison had been accumulating the songs he recorded for the album as far back as 1966. One being "The Art of Dying". Harrison picked up several more songs in late 1968 while visiting Bob Dylan and The Band in Woodstock, New York. He and Dylan co-wrote "I'd Have You Anytime" and "Nowhere to Go" (also known as "When Everybody Comes to Town") at this time, and Dylan showed him "I Don't Want to Do It." All three songs were attempted at some point in the sessions for All Things Must Pass, but only "I'd Have You Anytime" made the album which he did not perform during this rehersal session.
He began writing "My Sweet Lord" while touring with Delaney & Bonnie in late 1969, and would later utilize their backing group "Friends" as an important part of the All Things Must Pass sound. He made one last detour before beginning work on All Things Must Pass, visiting Dylan while the latter was starting sessions for New Morning in May 1970, learning "If Not For You" and participating in a now-bootlegged session.

On May 27,1970, before recording the album, Harrison sat in a studio with Phil Spector and ran through fifteen songs on guitar, with occasional support from an unknown bass player. These demos (eventually bootlegged as Beware of ABKCO! due to an altered line in his performance of "Beware of Darkness") showed him in the process of weighing his material, as eight of the songs would be either substantially reworked or not appear on the finished album.
Among these early outtakes, three have been officially released in one form or another: "Everybody, Nobody" was an early version of "The Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp", "Beautiful Girl" would be finished for Thirty Three & 1/3, and "I Don't Want to Do It" would wait fifteen years until being revisited for the soundtrack of Porky's Revenge. Five other songs, "Cosmic Empire", "Mother Divine", "Nowhere to Go," "Tell Me What Has Happened With You," and "Window, Window", have not seen official release.
Two demos of songs that did make the album, "Beware of Darkness" and "Let It Down" (with overdubs from 2000), would eventually be released on the remastered All Things Must Pass. Full discs of electric outtakes from the recording sessions would also leak on bootlegs in later years, and some of those tracks were also included in the remaster. Multiple takes of songs from the album appear on a bootleg three-disc box set The Making of All Things Must Pass along with other releases.

This demonstrates how talented George Harrison was and how much he was held back at the end of the Beatles. he was the first to have success as a solo performer even before Lennon and way before McCartney and the Wings.

Notes:

The last date of George Harrison's ill-favoured 1974 North American tour saw two shows played at Madison Square Garden on 20 December 1974. This one is the evening show, the very final show of the tour. Most of the Indian secton seems to be missing. The recording is rough at the start. Overall, it's a bit distorted, and lacks treble, but the sound is clear enough. It seems to be made by the same tapers as the afternoon show.

The 38th and 39th shows of George Harrison's 1974 North American tour, from an audience recording. This one contains the full shows, with the Indian sections, which were missing from earlier versions. The sound quality (after a slightly rough start) is excellent - clear (if not absolutely crystal) and clean, and an improvement on the Undercover set, which came from the same recordings. Now one of the best-sounding shows from the tour... 

EARLY SHOW 
The recording gets off to a muffled and uneven start, but becomes clearer as it progresses. George's voice does not sound hoarse at all, although his speaking voice is perhaps a bit deeper than normal. Ravi Shankar is still off sick, and George mentions this in the introduction to the Indian section. There is a tape cut after the end of "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)", but it doesn't affect the music. George remains upbeat, with a few jokes sprinkled into the proceedings, and unlike the evening performance, there is no hint of frustration at any lack of audience enthusiasm. 

LATE SHOW 
The crowd were evidently unresponsive (though people around the taper sound enthusiastic), and George expresses frustration at this at a couple of points in the second half of the show. His good humour remains, however. This is the show which John Lennon attended (at least part of it anyway - he said the Indian section wasn't played as Ravi shankar was still out of action: in fact, the full Indian set was played! Perhaps he was misquoted - but Badman gives an extended transcription which looks genuine). The tapes wobbles in the Undercover version are gone, along with the tape cuts (except during the pre-encore applause).

Filmed by Danish television, this concert was the last of three nights in Copenhagen and the final concert of the short Delaney & Bonnie & Friends 1969 European tour that had started in Germany on November 26 (see Bonus tracks). George Harrison attended the London Royal Albert Hall show on December 1 and was so impressed that he gave his "Let It Be" Telecaster guitar to Delaney Bramlett and joined the band for the remainder of the tour. Delaney can be seen playing that guitar in this video.

Comments:
This is the first date of the brief (two-week) Japanese tour George Harrison undertook with Eric Clapton and his touring band in late 1991; as nearly everyone knows, this would mark his final series of live appearances aside from a charity gig in London a few months later. The performance is solid throughout; the band sounded well-rehearsed and professional and based on this recording one could never sense George's well-known aversion to performing live. The setlist is identical throughout the tour, and a great mix of Beatles and solo material (with a brief EC showcase in the middle of the set). For those who have never heard one of these shows, it's worth picking up.

The recording is pretty good -- nearly all of the Japanese recordings are great -- and Mid Valley did a good job with this release. The only flaw is that there is a fair amount of crowd noise evident between songs -- to be honest, I don't know if the audience mars any of the music itself, but the taper was apparently in the midst of an enthusiastic crowd that cheered a lot between songs. From what I've heard, the audience shouldn't interfere with one's enjoyment of the show.

Another show which has only surfaced latterly, and has not been widely bootlegged, though Tarantura released a version in 2007 ("Waiting for a Hot Ticket") which features "Tom cat", missing here - perhaps a different recording of the show? The recording is not a great one. The recording levels were evidently too high, and there is a lot of distortion in many tracks, especially in the bass. A couple of tracks are almost lost in the distortion. There are also speed problems in a couple of tracks. It does give a good immediate sense of how loud the shows must have been, however. The Indian section is completely absent.

As for the show itself, George remains upbeat, with jokes in the intros, including a Monty Python quote, and the show is received very enthusiastically by the crowd. The performance of "Soundstage of Mind" confirms it as the evening performance.

"Audience recording from the original master cassette. Sound quality is decent, not great, as it was hard to get a great recording from the Chicago Stadium any way, anyhow! There is some crackling from the mic connection in one of the songs, but it does not last long. I am not sure if this is the complete recording. It probably is. George’s voice sounds a bit hoarse, so he may have abbreviated the set. I saw this same show at Madison Square Garden and recall it was not a long show and George’s voice was in poor form.

"This release is the fourth of many from the Howard Silver collection. Originally from New York, Howard spent his college years and thereafter in Chicago. He attended many concerts in the 70’s, and taped many of them using a Sony TC-110 with built in microphone. For later shows, he used an external microphone, of which brand he does not recall.These shows have never been heard by anyone but Howard and his wife! However, he is no hoarder. He did not think anyone would be interested in his tapes.
