This is the first of 3 shows Bruce played at CNE Stadium in the summer of 1984. Fantastic show straight from the master source.

Didn’t tape this one myself, but was at all 3 shows and they were killer. Bruce was only some 2 weeks and 13 shows into the legendary Born In The USA tour, the album that would eventually propel him into super stardom. Bruce was still just introducing some of the Nebraska songs and the arrangement he gives them is great.

NOTES:
Review of the concert by a Swedish VanTrades member:
There were 2 shows on the 29th and 30th of April, 1994 at Kulturbolaget in Malmo. Sometimes Kulturbolaget is refered to as KB. It has nothing what so ever to do with KB Hallen in Copenhagen. Kulturbolaget has a 750 capacity and is a rockclub. No chairs etc. The first show sold out immediately (first time in the club's history I believe) and the other show was also a full house, although it was still possible to buy tickets the day of the show.

The first show clocked in at 170 min and the second at an unbelievable 186 min which must be one of if not the longest ONE set shows Van has ever done. He had to be pulled of the stage by the manager because he was missing the last ferry to Copenhagen where he was staying. Apparently none of the hotels in Malmo (including the Sheraton and Radissons etc) were up to his standards. These long sets can in part explain why there was booing when Van left the same stage after only about 75 or so minutes when he played KB again in May this year.

Now why do I know all this? Well I'm pretty sure that it is my recording that is being talked about. I DAT taped both shows with great results. I'm aware of one other recording of at least one night but it was not as good as mine (and analog). There is one flaw in that I had some problems switching tapes so "Shaking All Over" from the 30th has been substituted from my friend's analog recording.

NOTES by the uploader:
This is a VG+ audience recording. On many places, the right channel was badly damaged, so I fixed it. Now you can tell there's a slight change in the sound when the fixing begins but that's all. I also had to remove a lot of gaps and litches from Disc 2. Other than these fixes, the original recording has been left untouched. The last two songs are from another audience source. Unfortuantely, it's of lesser quality, VG at best. Anyway, this is a really great show and the sound quality is really enjoyable so I'd recommand any music lover to get it.

Review: Spokane was an early step on 'Len Zefflin's' stairway to stardom!

How obscure was the opening band for Vanilla Fudge at Gonzaga University on Dec. 30, 1968? Well, the ads in both The Spokesman-Review and Chronicle read, "The Vanilla Fudge, with Len Zefflin." The ad copywriter misheard the name and thought it was some guy named "Len Zefflin." Little did anybody know that old Len would turn out to be Led Zeppelin, one of the most popular and influential rock bands of all time, whose reunion concert this month made worldwide news. That 1968 show at Gonzaga's Kennedy Pavilion would later assume a historic status in Zeppelin lore – all because a student brought a small tape recorder.

Today, this tape – bootlegged and distributed all over the world and the Web – is widely considered the first Led Zeppelin concert ever captured on tape; the earliest live recording of Led Zeppelin ever. Here's how lead singer Robert Plant introduced one of the songs: "This is off an album that comes out in about three weeks time on the Atlantic label. It's called 'Led Zeppelin.' This is a tune … called 'Dazed and Confused.' " So their first album wasn't even out yet. The album would not make a mark on the charts until February 1969. This concert was only their fifth in the U.S. The band had done tours of the U.K. and Scandinavia a few months before, many of them as The New Yardbirds, the band's short-lived original name. Some of these dates were actually leftover bookings for the Yardbirds, guitarist Jimmy Page's earlier band. Page and his new mates Plant, John Bonham and John Paul Jones had taken over some of these concert bookings.

So the band was mostly an unknown quantity. Yet at least one concertgoer, Bob Gallagher – a record store 4,000 Holes – was aware that he wasn't going to see some guy named Len Zefflin. "We knew who Jimmy Page was, from the Yardbirds, and we heard it was his band," said Gallagher, who was a teenager at the time. "I was a big Vanilla Fudge fan because psychedelia was really happening then. … But we were excited about seeing Jimmy Page." Spokane was experiencing a severe cold snap that week, with temperatures dropping to 10 below. Apparently, the Kennedy Pavilion (Gonzaga's gym) wasn't well-heated either, because many fans remember it as being icy inside, as well.

But when Led Zeppelin launched into the first song, the place heated up. "Bonham came out and started drumming on 'Train Kept a-Rollin',' and everybody went, 'Holy crap,' " said Gallagher. "There's never been a drummer like him. He was awesome. Then they all started playing and they were totally amazing." Plant said, between songs, "You won't believe this, but I don't think that either ourselves or our equipment is quite used to the temperature. It's taken about three hours of gas stoves under the equipment to get everything going." A little later Plant said they were now "getting warmed up properly," and you can hear the crowd response building after each song. By the evidence of the recording, the band's sound was already fully formed, distinguished by Plant's wailing voice – at one point he sounds like a siren – and Page's virtuoso guitar.

"What I mostly remember is when Jimmy Page took out a violin bow and began bowing his double-neck guitar," remembered Jeff "Tor" Nadeau. "The house was universally mind-blown. It was the most stunning and awesome sound ever." "It took about a half a song before everybody was blown away," remembered David Priano. "When Plant harmonized to Page's pipe-wrench riffs, the audience went nuts. The other thing I remember was the drum solo (during 'Pat's Delight'). As a rule I don't like them. This was the exception. When he threw away his drum sticks and finished with his bare hands – far out." "We were hoping that the first band wouldn't stay on stage too long," said Kerry Whitsitt of Spokane. "Little did I know that by the end of Led Zeppelin's set, I would be reeling in my seat, transfixed by Robert Plant's voice, body language and raw sexuality (I just knew he was looking straight through me most of the night). … It was electric in every sense of the word. We didn't want them to leave the stage – ever!"

Whitsitt recalls that Vanilla Fudge "paled in comparison," even though that band was riding high at the time with a hit version of "You Keep Me Hangin' On." Mike and Dorothy McMurtery said they left the show more impressed with Led Zeppelin, "whose hard rock music was ahead of its time for Spokane." Dave Cole said he was startled, at intermission, to see who was standing in line behind him at the concession stand. "Right behind me were Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, waiting to order," said Cole. "I thought it was pretty cool at the time. Several months later, when their first album was released and they got a lot more famous, I began to think it was even cooler."

Gallagher described the show as a turning point in his musical life. He said that he and his friends were simply "flabbergasted" by the time Led Zeppelin left the stage. "Then when Vanilla Fudge came on, they were so sleepy," said Gallagher. "It was like, after that, psychedelia was dead and heavy metal was born, all in a three-hour show. We didn't care about psychedelia anymore. We all just ran back to our Yardbirds records." "We felt transformed," said Whitsitt. "Those of us who experienced it together felt like we were in a special club."

About 30 years later, one member of that club walked into Gallagher's store and started talking about that show.

06 - Thank You

There are two sources for the first of two shows at the Alexandra Palace in London in the middle of Zeppelin’s UK winter tour. The first, presented on the first two discs of the current release, runs from the beginning through to the second encore and unfortunately doesn’t capture the organ solo and “Thank You”.

This source is good to very good but very flat and dull sounding. The music has a plastic spork hitting mashed potato quality. Previous releases of this source include the vinyl Alexandra Palace and Riot House on P. Jump Records (JMP 2) and on cd as Flawless Performance on Image Quality (IQ-013/14/15) and Riot Show on Cobra (006).

The second source is documented on the third disc runs from “Stairway To Heaven” through to the very end and recording the complete encore. This tape is significantly more clear detailed, dynamic and powerful with a hint of distortion present and has been released as Riot House on Chad (G.60 where it is erroneously dated from the following night and coupled with material from Raleigh, North Carolina April 7th, 1970), Alexandra Night on Right Stuff (RS-21012) and used by Image Quality to complete the first tape source on Flawless Performance.

The two London shows are a highlight from their longest tour of the UK that winter. After “Over The Hills And Far Away” Plant complains about the freeze, comparing it to their last show they did in London in 1971. “Since I’ve Been Loving You” sounds interesting with Jimmy’s howling guitar underlying Plant’s moans.

While Page tunes his guitar Plant dedicates “Dancing Days” to “summer, inebriation and good times, and also requires a different tuning. This is dedicated to those who might still be in high school.” The guitar solo in “Stairway To Heaven” contains some haunting riffs at about the eight-minute mark that sound like a variation of the riff used in the final verse at the end.

Before “Whole Lotta Love” members in the audience are shouting out requests. There are several votes for “Gallows Pole” but they don’t get it. There is a cut at 11:40 during the medley but is otherwise complete. Plant comes in too early for “Let’s Have A Party” during Page’s boogie improv.

The encores are the longest for the UK winter tour with the complete “Immigrant Song” and “Heartbreaker” that was used for two years as the set opener. This is the final time this was heard in public and this is also the penultimate recording of “Immigrant Song” (the final being on the Bradford soundboard).

The long show ends with John Paul Jones’ mellotron solo leading into a rare version of “Thank You”. The solo is three minutes long and is similar to the versions played in Nagoya on October 5th and Newcastle on November 30th and Cardiff on December 12th. It’s a fast paced and catchy tune played mostly with the string sounds. He plays the mellotron also for “Thank You” giving the song a different, softer feel. This is one of JPJ’s more interesting on-stage experiments and the second tape source for the first London gig is the best recording of the four.

Unlike previous releases, Wendy chose to archive the two sources instead of editing them together for a complete show so there is some duplication of material. They also chose to follow the Cobra release in duplicating the old vinyl artwork with the picture of Jimmy taken from the Sydney, Australia show the previous February.

On the back Wendy presents some nice pictures of the Hyatt West Hollywood aka “The Riot House”. It is rather strange since the concert is from London and not LA. Also on the back is a photo of the band c. 1975. Sometimes it is nice to honor a past vinyl title on a cd release but perhaps this shouldn’t be one of them. However this is a bit of an improvement over past releases, sounding pretty good and mastered at the correct speed.
