Notes by the uploader:
There've been various versions of the radio broadcast of this show, some I've see were a)silver cd bootleg(incomplete?), b)FM broadcast with Land/Gloria missing, c)FM Radio(mono DAT recording but more complete), d)FM Radio, and there've probably been various edits using these recordings. Here's another, this one recorded from satellite...

As well as getting a load of free German TV channels on the Astra satellite each channel also had alternate audio tracks carrying radio stations. I had 2 phono leads running from the satellite receiver to my hifi so I could make recordings of the radio shows.

On 12th Oct 1996 NDR2 broadcast a 54 minute shortened version of this show (consisting of tracks 1-6,12-14,16... I think. I rubbed out the titles of side 2 of the cassette to make way for the new version so I'm not 100% certain of 12,13,14). On 1st Nov 1997 NDR2 broadcast a 100 minute version, with a break for the news after the first 55 min. I recorded on a c120 so I wouldn't have to miss anything while turning the tape, then copied this onto two 60's, so what you get here is 1st gen. The first 25 min (tracks 1-5) are from the 1996 broadcast (this is where the extra talk parts are - after people Have The Power and after Summer Cannibals) and the rest is from the 1997 broadcast. (There's a DJ announcement lasting 7 seconds after Dancing Barefoot which more than likely wasn't present in the 2nd broadcast). I left the DJ announcement as he is talking over audience applause and it's only 7 seconds so it's no big deal, but I removed the other DJ announcements at the start and end of each hour as they were very polite and didn't talk over the beginning or end as sometimes happens so it was easy to remove them without losing anything.

In the spectral view it cuts off at around 15000Hz. I checked one of the FM sources (the 2nd link in the contrast clause up at the top) and it has the same cutoff point, so presumably that's typical for this station. You can also see a little line that's a 16k carrier wave in the part recorded in 1997, but weirdly it's not present in the part recorded from the 1996 broadcast.

Crystal Ship was the final song of the broadcast, but in line with other recordings (and the correct order proven by an audience recording) I've moved it to it's proper place with small crossfades. Nothing else has been touched apart from removing a click 0:22 into Beneath The Southern Cross, and another click 1:20 into About A Boy.

It sounds like there's a bit of clipping/distortion in a few drumbeats in part of Free Money, but on examination of the wave there are peaks that are higher than the distorted drumbeats and yet are not distorted, so the problem must be with the broadcast. Probably the guy on the soundboard had a fader set too high or something, but the sound guy is pretty fast in fixing things and it quickly goes right. (I also noticed some distorted drumbeats in Because The Night & Land which again don't last long.)

Open air concert with all the stupid idiots in the audience as always. They better go to a pub when the want to speak, laugh, making jokes, clapping & singing at the wrong time, walking through the crowd to buy beer & snacks& cheap wine. Open airs like this are not so good for my nerves, for further informations ask Minimax, the wizard with the Rinds Currywurst from Madame Curry instead of a delicious Schweine Currywurst from Bauer Ewald.

Notes by the taper:
This was the most physically uncomfortable gig I've been to in a long while, and that includes last week's three Heaton Park gigs, which involved hours of standing, braving the rain and a 6½ km walk back to the hotel each night.

In fact, some rain would have been most welcome at this gig, which was absolutely sweltering. It was oppressive enough outside on the street, but inside the sold-out Paradiso, one could barely draw breath.

Add to that a fever, no time to grab a meal ahead of the gig and the inability to remove layers of taper's armour once inside, and you have a recipe for extreme discomfort.

Thankfully, Patti was in blinding form and took my mind off these details for the better part of two hours. There were a couple of moments halfway through that I did feel physically sick, but these thankfully passed without incident.

I can't write volumes about this gig, because my perception was dulled and I therefore haven't committed as much to memory as I normally would have. For this reason alone, I'm glad to have taped the occasion, because I can now relive the evening in the comfort of my own home.

And so can you, dear listener.

Patti's set obviously drew heavily on her new record, 'Banga', but there were plenty of crowd-pleasers in there, too, such as the opener, 'Dancing Barefoot', 'Because The Night', 'Rock 'N' Roll ******', 'Gloria' and others.

As far as the crowd were concerned, Patti could do no wrong. Every song, old or new, was greeted enthusiastically. This enthusiasm is perfectly captured by the recording, which sounds like it might be a misleading taper euphemism for 'there's a lot of annoying audience noise', but that's not what I mean.

Patti played for close to two hours. Ordinarily, my attitude would be 'the longer, the better', but on this particular occasion, I was dying inside and could not wait to get out of the building, into the fresh air, and make a beeline for the Wok To Walk for a much needed noodle boost.

The recording is amazing. Tapers tend to hear their own recordings with silk ears, but once you've listened to the samples, you may find you agree with me. This is undoubtedly amongst my best work.

Listening to the gig now, it sounds like something I might have recorded from the radio. I cannot believe the clarity these new CCM 41V microphones are capable of and am absolutely blown away by them. They're not the easiest of microphones to use for stealthy recordings, but are more than worth the extra effort.

concert-info: what to say about this one that you didn't know in advance? Patti and Band performing their first album „Horses“ in complete and some more songs. And they made it well. Patti is still the power-women recking her fists, shouting, talking (and spitting) with such an high energy and expressivity (if this word really exists!?) -wow! The band did a powerful Velvet Underground-medley. Patti missed to add Sterling Morrison at „requiem“. This one is definitive dedicated to Bernhard Z. - who liked this women over so many years. And in his memory they played The WHOs „My Generation“ as the encore in a great and destructive version. Bernhard did love this one here listening to it from heaven above.
