I had bad vibes on the drive to the concert because the weather forecast called for 80 to 100 percent chance of rain during the show. Thankfully, we got not one drop of rain, and there was a nice breeze. I saw the Stones only once before in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1994, so I figured if I wanted to see them again now was the time. Mick was full of energy throughout the show, and the crowd couldn’t get enough. There were bum notes from Keith from time to time, but no one seemed to care. It’s clear that 2015 is not 1972, but they’re still getting it done. I was hoping for “Street Fighting Man,” but “She’s So Cold” was nice. Let me know what you think of the quality.

Welcome to the fifth chapter of JEMS' Nothing to Lose series revisiting Bruce's remarkable 1977 tour. For the full history of our obsession with this era and the back story on these "Official Audience Tapes," please refer to the notes in Vol. One found here:

Installment No. 5 brings Springsteen to New Haven, Connecticut, as the tour settles into its final shows in the northeast, six of which are still to follow. For me, this is a period of near perfection in terms of the caliber of the performances and the sense of urgency that's palpable in the recordings.

There may be only 13 songs in the set, but Bruce and the band are making every one of them count. My typical listening to material from '77 has tended to focus on the unique songs, like "Action in the Streets" and "It's My Life." But in preparing this show, I was struck by just how good the "standard" songs are. Bruce sings "Spirit in the Night" and "Thunder Road" with every bit as much conviction as he does "Don't Look Back," and we all know how special "Backstreets" is every night in '77. Fresh ears also picked out a lot of distinctive guitar work from Steve and Bruce that I felt I had never noticed before. "We tore it apart and put it together again" indeed.

New Haven is the final "official audience" source in the JEMS Archive. I consider it the best recording of the five, sounding just a bit closer, sharper and with better instrument separation than the previous four. It came to us from a different source than the first four (an insider, not a collector), so it may also be a generation to the good comparitively. But it is incomplete, joined in progress during "Spirit."

Happily, our pal CB taped the show as well and loaned us his master cassettes. The CB source was previously released by Fanatic; we did a fresh transfer for this release. CB told me he taped from the back of the arena and it sounds like it, but the recording is still clear and fills in what's missing from the better source to give us the complete New Haven show. Samples provided.

Special thanks yet again to: M and J from JEMS for pulling out our many versions of these DATs and helping make new transfers; to CB, one of "The Original Two" who got the whole Springsteen taping hobby started; the folks on the Stone Pony message board whose thread sparked this series; and to mjk5510 who takes our bits and bobs and gets them all pretty for you.

When the '77 series returns, we'll revisit Toronto, Detroit and Toledo, all from fresh master transfers. Until then, enjoy New Haven, and better still, add your thoughts about the show and the recording in the comments.

Splice source (audience): Core Sound HEBs (dpa 4061s) > Core Sound Battery Box (Bass Filter On) > Sony PCM-M10 (@24/48) (Row 8, center) > Audacity (Edits, Fades, Crowd Peaks Reduced, Bass Boost +2db, Tracking, > 16/44 WAV) > Trader's Little Helper > flac > (additional editing by nolataper:) > X Audio Compression Toolkit 2.23 > aiff > Bias Peak Pro (bass reduced about 3 db at 71 Hz, compression added with -15db threshold, limiting added with -10db; normalized about 11.5 db) > edited into the main recording, below.

Transfer: flac file (transferred by ftp from remote pc) > MacBook Pro (2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) > X Audio Compression Toolkit 2.23 (convert to aiff) > aiff > Bias Peak Pro (trimmed, normalized by 5.6 db, split into songs) > X Audio Compression Toolkit 2.23 (sector boundaries repaired; level 8 compression) > flac

Notes: There were numerous dropouts and numerous glitches in the recording -- primarily in Track 6 -- that were inherent in the FM broadcast AND the online mp3 stream. The glitches seem to be related to the station's use of a computer for recording or processing that seems to get overwhelmed or overloaded, possibly from an overloaded processor, a too-slow hard-drive or a fragmented drive. The glitches sound sort of like a single note repeating itself over the space of a fraction of a second. The issues have plagued WWOZ's live broadcasts for years.

Where possible the dropouts and glitches were repaired or removed:
* A 2.2-second dropout was closed up at 3:00 into Track 18. There is an audible cut in the recording about 1-1/2 seconds later.

* There were 9 dropouts totaling about 11 seconds beginning about 4:22 into Track 6. In addition to the dropouts of silence, there were numerous glitches, rending about 45 seconds of the song virtually unlistenable (and unrepairable). That section was removed and replaced with a splice of 1:29 from the audience source, beginning at 4:11 into Track 6, with 10-second crossfades into and out of the splice. (The original, unedited FM track with the dropouts is archived.) Due to differences in sound quality, the transition to the audience splice is fairly jarring. But, arguably, it's better than the original FM recording.

The FM broadcast begin in the middle of Los Lobos' second song. In order to create a more complete recording, an additional splice from the audience source was used to restore the stage intro, first song and the beginning of track 2. The FM source begins about 1:48 into Track 3.

Recording notes: Overall , a very good recording. Minimal crowd noise/chatter. (The Normal for an outside event ) . Tixs in section 114. Lower Field Level . Straight back on Keith's side.
Kept mics placed on my glasses and in line with a stack at the end of the field . You will hear me clapping at times, and even hoot and holler .(not much)
When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do...and I was caught up in the moment. ( I am a Georgia Boy, it just comes out naturally at times )

Personal notes: I've seen the Stones 6 times now , and I rank this show up there with the 94 Voodoo Lounge show I saw. Its an honor to go to this venue as this is maybe the oldest,
on campus Football field in College Football. ( AKA Grant Field ). I saw an, IORR.Org sign, at the stadium but the party I was with was in a hurry to get in so my apologies
for not stopping and chatting. I did holler "IT'S ONLY ROCK N ROLL", and he replied "BUT I LIKE IT ". The party I was with said is that that that means ? I explained it as
we kept walking. It rained and stormed all day on our ride up to ATL, but luckily, Keith did his pre show "No Rain Stick" ritual before the show. It worked as the sun came back out
around 8:30 pm right before it went down .

Concert notes: Good Performance. No rarities like the Columbus, or Dallas shows , but "Some Girls" was cool to hear. Mick made several Atlanta, and Georgia references.
"You Gotta Move" was very cool when Keith sat down with a Slide and Acoustic. The Band had fun and it parlayed into the crowd.
Even when they made a few intro mistakes and stumbled through "Some Girls", they laughed it off. Mick compliments the GA crowd at the end of "Miss You" .

The band / performance:
The four Northside Dubliners make their return to the recently refurbished Forum for the fifth and final night of their Los Angeles residency (sixth if you include their KROQ promotional club show, so aptly recorded by JEMS). The band performed for nearly 2 1/2 hours to a capacity crowd. On the surface, it may appear strange that the set was dominated by "Songs of Innocence" (nine in total!); an album that the band "couldn't giveaway" nine months ago. However, the album has a natural ebb and flow to it and has the added benefit of telling a narrative of the band's early formative years. After years of over the top stage productions with spaceships and claws, I commend them on their decision to return to arenas and to scale the production back. The stage design allows nearly everyone in the audience a closer view of the band at some point in the performance. I was located directly above the "e" stage which afforded me a bird's eye view for the majority of the second half of the show. Unfortunately, I was not able to see the massive two storey monolithic LED screen that was lowered across the center catwalk. The band would perform inside the screen at different intervals during the night. The band was tight and well-rehearsed and Bono's voice was in fine form. No doubt aided by the band's "two nights on - two nights off" itenerary. After all is said and done, the band will make 70+ stops across 20 cities around the world over the next seven months. The set saw the tour debut of "Volcano" and "Ordinary Love". The performance overall seemed a bit subdued. The band is clearly still mourning the loss of their fallen comrade, Dennis Sheehan. Still it was nearly flawless. The two exceptions were a problem with the "e stage" piano at the beginning of "Every Breaking Wave" in which The Edge was forced to retreat to the main stage. During that time Bono brought up a 70's-era Elvis impersinator from the audience, who regaled the audience with a verse of "Can't Help Falling In Love". Also, one of his guitar effects didn't trigger during one of the WTSHNN verses. All in all it was a great show!

The recording:
It's a fairly solid pull from the fifth row of The Forum's proverbial "cheap seats" (Upper Section). This section used to be called "The Collonade" when the Showtime Lakers and Gretsky-era Kings played here. The 60m that the MSG Group spent in 2013 saw upgraded seats that didn't afford any extra legroom as they didn't change the configuration of the interior bowl. Still, even these nosebleed seats afford a much better view than those at Staples Center, which are situated atop three stories of suites. Parking here is still a mad dog's breakfast , but that's a whole other story (YIKES!) This section has the added benefit of having the most direct path to the ceiling stacks that are configured in a large ellipse above the runway stage. I was situated directly in front of a small projection screen with speakers on either side. Unfortunately, I had no direct "line of sight" to any single speaker. Still, the people directly in front of me were ituated in a Box section 2 feet below me and they were very quiet. There is very little chatter on the recording. That being said, I did mildly attenuate a bit of clapping. Also, one dude behind me screams out "Gloria" between songs on 3 occasions. I did expand the frequency response a tad and tried to define the bass a bit more in order to reduce the "boom in the room" sound. Still, it sounds pretty decent for an arena pull. I'll let you be the judge. On a final note, the intermission portion was parsed as it contains a prerecording of Johnny Cash's "The Wanderer" in its entirety.
