Eric Burdon - 1986-06-25 - Westbury, UK (SBD/FLAC)

(Soundboard FLAC)

Excellent soundboard recording of Eric Burdon's performance at the Westbury Music Fair on the 25th. of June, 1986.It's released on Hiwatt records (Japan?) under the name of Searching For A Brand New Day - drawing on the title of one of the tracks performed here. It's a bootleg for sure, though.

That makes this concert is a unique document of Eric's artistic visions at this point of time, and it's kind of sad hearing how inspired it sounds, thinking of what actually came out of his hopes and dreams in the years after.

Ripped from the original "release" in lossless wave. Convertion, checksum created and torrent made with Trader's Little Helper.

02 - DOn't Bring Me Down
03 - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
04 - No More Elmore
05 - The Riff: Tobacco Road/Bring It On Home To Me/See See Rider
06 - When We Were A Gang
07 - Factory (Working Life)

CD2
01 - River Deep - Mountain High
02 - Searching For A Brand New Day
03 - I'm Crying
04 - House Of The Rising Sun

This actually isn't such a bad name, because this was sort of what Eric was doing at the time. He'd just published his first autobiography, and had a record deal for the first time in years. I think you can sort of feel the positive vibe in this concert, and Eric's in much better shape than last year's official live release - That's Live (recorded in March 1985). Sadly, the whole project crumbled (as so many times before), and the multi-media autibiographical project called I Used To Be An Animal was more or less ruined. The book was heavily edited, and the CD album which was supposed to accompany the book, wasn't released until 1988, and then on vinyl. This lead to many of the (best) songs being left off the record (like Storyville and Front Street), and there are several bootlegs circulating with alternate songs/versions from these sessions... The 1995 official album Lost Within The Halls Of Fame is a more true presentation of what I Used To Be An Animal was supposed to be. Here are the spoken word intros for the songs included, and more songs made it onto this release. Sadly, Lost... is the synth-based version of I Used... and thus isn't that great an album.

Notes by the trader
We are extremely pleased to present a super rare and previously uncirculated SB recording of Eric Burdon & The Animals from Bologna, Italy in 1967.

On June 16th, 1967 Eric Burdon & The Animals played at the legendary Monterey Pop Festival, portins of that performance is documented on audio and video.

Very little is known about the short 3 date Italian mini-tour they embarked on the week prior to Monterey. What we know is that the band landed in Milan on June 9th. They performed on June 10th in Milan, playing in the open air at the Velodromo Vigorelli. This particular show was far from a success, battling inclement weather some reports put the attendance at less than 300 people. A few photos from performance do survive and appear to support low attendance.

We also know that immediately following Milan the band played Bologna and Florence. What we don't know is the exact date of the Bologna show.

The recording comes our way from my old friend MR and was given to him by a member of one of the opening bands. It is unknown who prompted the recording, if it was the band, the promoter or one of the opening bands. Regardless there are very few live recordings from this era and it's a special treat to hear this one 52 years later.

The raw capture off the soundboard is somewhat of a rough mix, the vocals are up front and higher in the mix than the instrumentation but not to a fault. It also ran 40 cents
fast and has been adjusted. Samples provided.

The tape opens with two songs from 'The Animals', it is assumed these are from either an earlier show or possibly the Milano show as we believe Florence took place after Bologna. We then get treated to two songs by one of the opening bands 'I Condors'. Next up is The Animals main event, it is unknown if this is the complete show. There were a couple of additional audience recorded songs after the SB portion but they did not sync up with this show as 'Tobacco Road' followed what was only the end of 'All Night Long' which was clearly not the version found on the former SB portion. We have not included these as they are very poor quality and they suffered from CD rot that I tried but was unsuccessful in removing. It's not often tapes from a legendary band and historic time in their existence surfaces and we thank MR for allowing us all access to them.

Notes
To this day, one of my favorite bands is Eric Burdon and WAR and then WAR for a couple years after that. I got this a long while back. It ended up on a failed hard drive and I was able to save this about 2 years ago.I'm glad I was able to recover this and many other gems from that drive. Burdon would leave WAR during this tour. What you will get here in this download is a great, short-but-sweet couple of toonz that contain some really great grooves and pockets..  Even in black and white it shows what the Eric Burdon and WAR show was all about. This is da shit in my opinion. The thing that stands out to me is how low of a volume the band actually plays at here, allowing the songs to breath and percolate... I like it like that. This band oozes cool. For a bit of history, WAR was a backup band for Deacon Jones (LA Rams) when the band was then called NightShift. Producer Jerry Goldstein suggested to Eric that he collaborate with this band for a future project... which spawned "Eric Burdon Declares WAR".  Thanks to whoever put this out there for us! I hope you enjoy this as much as I do. I wish there was a complete version of this out there that I could get. "bluzman"

Soundboard recording (or very good audience recording) of Eric Burdon's Fire Department's performance at Palasport, Reggio Emilia, Italy on the 11th. of December 1980. This show has been uploaded to Dime before, and there was some confusion over the date then (I think it said the 9th. the last time). According to Dionisio Castello's Eric Burdon "Bible" the 11th. of December is correct.
Anyway, it's a good, exciting show where Eric performs a mix of stuff from The Last Drive (including its title track), some songs from the forthcoming Comeback project and of course the standard Animals classics in some unusual arrangements. Louisiana Red joins in on some tracks.

This has to be one of the most rare and unique tapes I've had the pleasure to spin and listen to. There is very little information about this time period of Eric's career. I've just recently obtained some new tapes of Eric Burdon from a long time collector in France. The story goes that a few tapes were pulled from Burdon's collection and sold by guitarist John Sterling and were distributed by a Hollywood company back in the late 80's. I had never heard anything from this time period before and had to do some research on this. I was only able to find one other show documenting this short lived band. A little back story on the time frame leading up to this performance. On February 5, 1971 Eric finally left his band in the middle of their European tour, allegedly due to exhaustion. After returning home and taking time off, Eric started working on his next album titled "Guilty" during the summer with Jimmy Witherspoon. Deciding to take this new group of musicians on the road and call themselves "Tovarich". The word "Tovarich" is Russian and translates into "Comrades". The lineup for this band only existed for a few months, they also provided the soundtrack to the movie "Revenge of the Cheerleaders". I read that Burdon and Witherspoon played seven consecutive Mondays at the Whiskey in 1971 sometime in July; before recording the Guilty! LP (aka Black and White Blues). As I was transferring this tape I noticed that side B had extra tracks at the end of the tape. After more research, I found it to be 2 songs from one of the previous Whiskey A Go Go shows. There is a double liberated cd that contains songs from various Whiskey A Go Go shows. I was able to compare the 2 extra tracks I had and they are the same as the liberated release. I don't have the double cd release at this time. My tracks 11 and 12 are the last 2 songs from an unknown Whiskey A Go Go set. Since I have no access to an official tour list, this time period and Whiskey dates are still a mystery to me. If anyone has anything from The Whiskey A Go Go 1971., Please upload it for us to hear. This recording should spark interest in a wide variety of collectors, even if you're just a casual fan, this is pretty cool stuff.  While listening to the guitar playing, I swear this guy is heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix. A big Thank You goes out to TTD resident Philippes for sending his tapes all the way from France. You guys know I do my homework and I'm hoping that more people will be able to come forward to shed some light on this time period. Eric actually mentions all these members onstage and it's a very interesting bunch of players.

Eric Burdon had a problem with his voice (he was drinking a lot of hot tea) during the first songs. Also there was a technical problem with his mic at the start of 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood'.

In the beginning of 'River Is Rising' (48:15-48:30) a footballsong (olé, olé, olé) was mixed in. I don't know whether it had a purpose, or was done by accident, i've never experienced this before with L1 Radio. This part is replaced by 15 seconds of the mp3 podcast (48.000 Hz/ 128 Kbit/s) from that broadcast (website L1).

INTERVIEWS
15. PETER ALBION/DAVID CROSBY/GRACE SLICK...

The Monterey Pop Festival was held June 16 - 18, 1967 at the County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California, also the site of established folk, jazz and blues festivals. It was the first large rock festival, with around 200,000 people attending, and served as a template for the Woodstock Festival in New York State two years later. Many of the performers got their first big-time exposure at Monterey.

Great production for the Italian Bootleg label "On Stage", made in the 1994.
