Review from Steve:
The title has come from a line near the end of the CD. Spoken by Van Morrison in reply to someone in the audience who seems to disagree with Van taking a long time to return for an encore (about 3-4 minutes of clapping) and gets up on the stage himself - Van Morrison replies "If You Don't Like It, Go Fuck Yourself"

JEMS is pleased to revisit the JF Archive and release another title in the Van Morrison Lost California Performances series. For further details and backstory on JF, his tapes and the extraordinary lost Van performances from 1975, please refer to the notes in Vol.

The Santa Barbara set is the last of five shows in but three days time recorded by JF. Though it seems odd now, the show took place in the afternoon. It is a relatively short set but oh so sweet, with Morrison’s vocals at the apex of an arc of passion that started at the first show of the run in Irvine two days earlier. The set list retains “Blue Money” from Riverside and restores “Sweet Mary Blues” from Irvine along with more familiar inclusions from this leg of the tour.

Here’s what JF recalls about the Santa Barbara show, which is his favorite of the five:

“The County Bowl back in the 1970s was not at all what it is today. Back then, you drove up a dusty driveway and parked in a bunch of dirt. You trudged up a dusty path to the bowl where, if you had lawn tickets, you got to take up position on a grassy incline in front of the stage. That’s where we had tickets on this day. I’m pretty sure my friend Steve joined Laura Greenwood and me that day, and we stretched out our blanket about 2/3 of the way back to the brick wall which separated our section from a large section with seats. We were about halfway between center stage and the right bank of speakers. It was all very casual and natural. The setting in the woods over Santa Barbara was every bit as beautiful, if less groomed, than it is now.

I have always loved this recording. It has a slightly boomy, low-fi clarity that I find irresistible. You can almost feel the heat of the summer afternoon in the sound captured on tape. Being an outdoor venue, of course, there was none of the echo or trapped sound you got in indoor halls. Once again, Van was stretching the musical horizons of us kids.”

The higher quality of the Riverside recordings is not only preserved in Santa Barbara but the recording sounds closer to the action while still capturing the atmosphere of the distinctive setting. Samples provided.

Van’s band for the 1975 tour was: John Blakely on guitar; Mark T. Jordan on keyboards; David Hayes on Bass; and Tony Dey on drums. Tom Scott and the L.A. Express was the opening act on this day.

Thanks to JF, who reached out on DIME (you could be next!) and offered us his archive, which had been sitting in boxes, 6000 miles away from where he lives today, for 20+ years. Like so many early tapers, he had great stories to tell and the memories flooded back as we sorted through tapes. We are pleased to be able to bring his work to all of you. Please let him know through your comments that you are, too.

We also appreciate the unnamed Van collectors for helping to get JF’s masters back in his control. Lastly, special thanks mjk5510, who continues serve as JEMS’ post-production and quality-control supervisor. He is essential to our process and we couldn’t do it without him.

Santa Barbara is the last of JF’s 1975 recordings and the final chapter in the 40th Anniversary Lost California Performances cycle. What a run it has been. But fear not, the JF Archive will continue and in 2016 we are pleased to announce we’ll be presenting nine more of JF’s Van Morrison master tapes from 1973-74.

RIVERSIDE, LATE SET
The 11 pm setlist at Webber Hall brings some welcome changes from the early set. The wonderful “St Dominic’s Preview” mixed with “Walk on the Wild Side” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” returns, and we also get the first ‘75 tour recording of “Blue Money.” Released on His Band And The Street Choir, “Blue Money,” is a relative rarity, with only 18 known performances prior to this one according to the authoritative set-list histories found at vanomatic.de.

But even more exciting is the first known live version of “I Have Finally Come To Realize,” a song recorded at the Record Plant in Sausalito within days or weeks of this show, but not released officially until 1998’s The Philosopher’s Stone. Van introduces it by saying he’d “like to do a recent song” and delivers a wonderful reading. There are only ten known performance of the track, all from 1998 and 2002, so JF’s recording is indeed a major find.

Happily, the high quality of the early Riverside recording carries over to the late show which sounds every bit as good. Samples provided.

Once again the band is: John Blakely on guitar; Mark T. Jordan on keyboards; David Hayes on Bass; and Tony Dey on drums.

Here’s what JF recalls about the Riverside shows:

“This was the fourth show in a mini-Van marathon – two shows the previous night in Irvine, the second of two this night in Riverside and one more on the afternoon of the following day in Santa Barbara. There were no seats here – people just gathered around the stage on the floor of the college basketball stadium and danced or just hung out and listened. I stood back by the sound booth in the center of the hall, warily eyeing Van’s sound people so they wouldn’t catch me recording and secretly wishing I could tap into their line feed from the stage.”

And finally, special thanks mjk5510, who continues serve as JEMS’ post-production and quality-control supervisor. He is essential to our process and we couldn’t do it without him.

Notes:
In my humble opinion, here is the last BIG Van show, his blaze of glory. Really the end of an era. Though the band later appeared to be one of the worst he played with and is responsible for this awfull 2002-2006 shipwreck, both Van and the musicians were awesome this night. The "No Prima Donna" mantra at the end of "In The Afternoon" sang with this incredible broken voice is my all-time favourite minute in all my Van's collection.

About the release:
The show was broadcasted by TVN Polland. The broadcast didn't feature the whole concert, 3 tracks were left out. But a complete soundboard recording later surfaced.

2 different captures of the broadcast were located: one coming from an analog TV, the other one from digital TV. Those captures are known to be the best sounding Van recordings ever, along with "From Dublin Up to Sandy Row".

Many versions have already been circulating. Among them, the most famous are:

- Vanlose's "Van In Warsaw", widely distributed as a tree, was unfortunately featuring the digital TV version. It was selected because it was a pure digital recording but as we know now, digital TV signal is lossy, and the FA and SA performed on this boot let no doubt: it's most probably issued from mp2 at a rather low bitrate, there is no frequency above 16kHz.

- The analog TV version was fortunately offered on EZT. The uploader (thank you!!!) who was one of the tree administrators reported: "it was really hard to hear a distinction . The other version was selected because it was a pure digital recording. The show was on tv and the chap took the digital tv signal right to his computer, so it is a DDD. This version is based on an analog signal tv signal, so its an ADD. Someone else can probably better explain this than I. That being said, although we chose to tree the other version, a few of us thought that this version had an intangible that made it worth while. Much like a cd can never capture the sound you get from an LP, there is something in this version that the other lacks, but beauty is in the ear of the beholder."
Obviously, this intangible something is mainly the fact that this ADD version is lossless.

- "First Time In Warsaw" also features the broadcasted part. I don't know which version this one was made with, i suspect it's the analog TV one because of the different tracking at the end of disc 1.

- Euro Boot's "That's Life" bootleg http://tinyurl.com/32j8mx, with its infamous bad pitch.

- The soundboard recording version is the only one featuring the complete concert. Unfortunately, like many soundboard recordings, it has a very dry and unbalanced sound quality. What's more, the sound is mono.

A stereo version of the complete concert maybe exists somewhere: according to Wavelength, Radio 3 Polland broadcasted it on June 9, 2001. Unfortunately, it never surfarced. If someone has it, by all mean contact me!

For this new set, i reworked the soundboard recording so it sounds much closer to the broadcast. I then merged the missing tracks d1t01 and d1t02 to the analog TV sourced "Days Like This" on disc 1 and d2t02 between "One Irish Rover" and "Don't Worry About A thing" on disc 2 as smoothly as possible to make seamless transitions.

JEMS is thrilled to relaunch the JF Archive series, this time presenting nine Van Morrison performances recorded in and around Southern California by JF circa 1973-74. For further details and backstory on JF, his tapes and the extraordinary lost Van performances from 1975 that started the series, please refer to the notes in Vol.

Unlike last year’s Lost California series, JF’s 1973-74 recordings have long been in circulation among collectors. However, this series marks the first-ever digitization and dissemination directly from his cassette masters. As JF himself notes below, the recordings were made with unlikely equipment but yielded surprisingly listenable results. Samples provided.

The 5/24/73 early show, opening night of a four-day run at the Troubadour, is notable for several reasons. It was the very first concert JF ever recorded as he details in his comments. Seven songs from this recording later turned up on what is believed to be the first ever Van Morrison bootleg LP, A Spawn of the Dublin Pubs, on the legendary Trademark of Quality label. And if that wasn’t enough, JF’s girlfriend at the time shot photos, four of which are included in this torrent and used in our cover art.

Several of the shows Van did in May-June of 1973 with the Caledonia Soul Orchestra were recorded and would later form the basis for the fantastic live album It’s Too Late To Stop Now. To his credit, Van changed up the set list with some frequency throughout the run, which meant many songs are not represented on the official document. In fact, no performances from this particular show are included on ITLTSN and the set features four tracks not found on the album at all: “The Way Young Lovers Do,” “Snow In San Anselmo,” “Day By Day” and “Bein’ Green.”

In all, this a lovely performance and another one of those “you are there” recordings, despite the lo-fi gear.

*Please note that Van Morrison reference sites, including the essential vanomatic.de, attribute this setlist to the LATE show on 5/24/73. JF is certain he recorded the EARLY show, given his age at the time, his clear memory and other details corroborated by his notes. JEMS believes this recording should set the record straight and flip the attribution of the set lists from this night’s two shows going forward.

Here are JF’s reflections of the show:

“This was the first concert I ever recorded. Over the next four or five years, and then again in the late 1980s when I lived in Boston, I recorded a total of around 100 shows. Most of my Van recordings were done on a large black recorder that belonged to my mother who used it in the elementary school classes she taught. It was probably 25-inches long, 15-inches wide, and a good 5-inches thick if not more. It was a hefty, front-loading machine on which you popped up a plastic cover and snapped the cassettes in place. The microphone was standard issue, nothing fancy. Fidelity wasn’t great, but it was good enough for about half of this recording to become part of the first Van Morrison boot I know of, A Spawn of the Dublin Pubs.

For this one, my girlfriend Laura Greenwood and I sat against the back left wall by the door leading to the dressing rooms, bathrooms and stairs to the balcony seats. Those seats in the tiny club were on a raised platform to give folks in the back a good view of the stage. I sat in the far left seat, Laura to my right, where she took some fabulous photos once the concert got started.

At one point as we waited and nursed our first drinks of the night (I was 18, Laura 19 at the time) I had the sensation of something going on immediately to my left. That is, I felt a sensation of heat and tension along the upper part of my left arm. I didn’t give it much thought, but it was undeniable. I recognized it then and haven’t forgotten it to this day. I looked to my left, and there in the dim, smoky light I saw a nondescript man in a grayish suit standing right next to me, nearly pushing up against my body as he tried to keep the doorway clear. His head came up to the top of my shoulder. I didn’t give him a second thought and went back to my conversation with Laura.

A few moments later, the voice of Doug Weston, founder and owner of the Troubadour, came over the sound system, encouraging us to give a warm welcome to Van Morrison. A roar went up and the small, gray figure standing to my left started for the stage. It was Van.”

Once again, our gratitude goes to JF, who reached out on DIME (you could be next!) and offered us his archive, which had been sitting in boxes, 6000 miles away from where he lives today, for 20+ years. Like so many early tapers, he had great stories to tell and the memories flooded back as we sorted through tapes. We are pleased to be able to bring his work to all of you. Please let him know through your comments that you are, too.

We also appreciate the unnamed Van collectors who helped get JF’s masters back in his control. Lastly, special thanks to mjk5510, who continues his yeoman duty as JEMS’ post-production and quality-control supervisor. His contributions are essential in getting the music to you.
