05. I Shall Be Released
06. Driving Wheel (->)
07. Mercury Blues ->
08. You're So Fine
09. ...Louise
10. Your Old Lady

Total Time ::: 1:12:02

::: Somewhat distant AUD but with high end still relatively intact & virtually no audience noise. Check samples for yr own personal take it or leave it factors.

::: Warts: Distant, bass heavy at start, bit o' hum, but overall pretty damn steady. More notes below.
::: *Should UPGRADE most circulating copies & is a known gen. Seemingly last on DIME in 2006 as unknown gen but I don't have that one to compare to. If yrs is better, let out a holler.
::: Steve Miller Band played 2 nights with different bands on the bill each night. August 3: Jeff Beck Group/Blue Cheer/Steve Miller Band/Big Mama Thornton & the original Hound Dog Band/Charles Lloyd. August 4, 1968: Butterfield Blues Band/Ike & Tina Turner/Electric Flag/Magic Sam/Steve Miller Band/Kaleidoscope.

Recording Information ::: unknown mono reel-to-reel recorder & microphone -> master mono audience reel tape -> 1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby B on.

Playback 2011-07-30 ::: 1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi BX-300 cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth & pitch adjusted, heads cleaned & demagnatized -> Tascam CD-RW900SL professional CD recorder -> CD-RW, no track splits -> computer -> EAC secure mode (logs made) -> wav file(s) -> Audacity (normalisation to remove DC offset, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch / dropout / bump / pop / click / dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, NO equalisation) -> CD Wave (track splits) -> Trader's Little Helper -> yer ears. First uploaded week of 2013-02-16.

NOTE : Twas HARD not to EQ this but I managed not to do it. Someone with real EQ know-how could presumably do some magic to this like knock out low end hum which is not problematic during the music (you hear it inbetween songs) but I imagine things would be clearer without it. Also a fairly inaudible electric current cyclical noise (heard at slow speeds) might be able to be reduced. Plus the usual EQ wizardry & likely things would improve even more, though it'll always be distant.

1st 7 minutes bass boomy, then settles down except for seconds here & there ("You're So Fine"). Some hum but not audible except between songs. Some distortion in 1st 2&1/2 minutes of "Your Old Lady", then calms down but after 10 minutes on my copy the volume dropped WAY down & had to be manually corrected & the distortion returns somewhat with some volume fluctuation & occasional noise, so I suspect battery power (mike or deck) might have played a part. Original tape flip presumably between trax 8&9.

This came to me in a DAT trade, and this was the enclosed documentation:

SBD>DAT>VHS HiFi>DAT

I then took my DAT clone and converted to shn:

My DAT Clone>WAV (SPDIF @44.1 KHz)>SHN (mkw)>CD

I suppose there is a pure digital version out there somewhere, but I have never seen this circulate, so I don't know for sure. This sounds pretty good despite the one analog generation. Enjoy and spread the tunes!

At the big outdoor festival of Werchter 1982 in Belgium recordings were made for radio broadcast. This is a pre-FM copy Hans made from the desk while the radio recording was running. It is 65 minutes, the complete Steve Miller Band concert. You can hear Miller expressing regrets that he does not have time to platy longer, but other acts were waiting. Sound quality is rather amazing, especially considering that the tapes is 30 years old.

Notes from Remasters Workshop:
This show was rescued from a failing hard drive full of recordings I hadn't got around to for several years. And what a find it was! If you like Steve Miller, you are going to like these performances. I found this on Usenet, apparently not long after its initial appearance via other venues. It's been in storage ever since.

The recording was pitch, phase and level corrected in Audition 3, and retracked in CD Wave. EQ brightening was added to one track that was spliced in from a different source, to match the sound of the rest of the music.

Many thanks to the people who liberated the show - and to twofthrs at Dime - your efforts are appreciated! This is my humble attempt to keep your work accessible, because you don't find stuff like this every day, and it needs to be heard.

2012 Notes: Used judiciously, sound enhancement software can be used to great benefit. In this case, the BBE Sonic Maximizer was applied to the original cassette sound, which was quite dull. While not every type of sound benefits from BBE, it seems to be very effective on cassette sound. The result is like taking the blanket off the speakers, in a way that does not sound processed or artificial. This recording gained a whole new level of listenability. To illustrate the difference, an mp3 demo has been included, which switches back and forth between no effect and BBE, to show why the whole show redone this way was preferable to the existing recording. (Please do not add this to your disc!)

Notes by the taper
This has to be my favorite recording in the year and a half I recorded on it. What energy the band had! To this day it amazes me when I hear it. This is a good a listen as it gets. Of course it helps if you like Steve Miller. If you do.......I guarantee this to be as good if not the best Steve Miller you ever heard. This is a perfect listen with a beer on a Friday night. This was when bands started going cordless. You hear every now and then static through the PA. How amusing when Stevie says the line "Someone give me a Cheeseburger" a whole bunch of Summerfest cheeseburgers was hurled up the stage. For those that went to the Summerfest Main stage back in the days......remember the group always center 20 rows or so? "The Gerbils". I got a kick out of that. These were great times....beer 50 cents a cup. Steve Miller was smiling from ear to ear this entire show. You want kick ass rock with all the dynamic range? Then I suggest you crank this show on your best system! The levels of the cdr are exactly what is on the master. I permanently added to the lineage "ZERO GAIN SETTING!". Unless I used a pro mixer you cannot add gain with the CDR burner otherwise the dynamic range suffers. I prefer the Naim 52 as my buffer anyway. Stop looking at levels and just crank it.

From May 19 to July 1, 1992, Steve Miller was the opening act for the Grateful Dead for 26 Shows. This is the second show out of three, from the Sam Boyd Stadium.

Recording notes:
The first song starts in progress with a harmonica lead intro into 'Livin' in the USA'. Some sources on etree would suggest that Steve played 3 more songs at the end. That's not true. Supposedly missing 'Jungle Love, The Joker, Take the Money and Run'. However, directly before the start of 'Rockin' Me', Steve Miller says, 'This will be our last one, see you tomorrow.' A couple of those songs were only played on the third night. I feel confident that this is the whole show.

About the recording :
1. No EQ was used, just a raw recording like it originally was done.
2. There is background noise on this tape, i don't know how it was recorded.
3. Sound quality is really various from really good to just ok...it sounds to me like a mixture of audience and soundboard source. 1st set is recorded better than second set. On the other side the performance is so good that it deserves to be heard. I left it like it was, so in case you can make your personal sound's manipulations......
