A great concert with a band eager to communicate with the audience as evidenced by what they put in the actual performance of course but also the long talks by Stevie (that one was a bit long!), Lindsey and Mick. I was expecting something very "slick" so that was a (refreshing) surprise as you rarely see big acts interact with the audience like this. It would have been perfect if Christine McVie was still playing with them, would have loved to hear "You Make Loving Fun", well she was back for a song recently, so who knows, she might be back later. The rest of the band certainly look like they have a lot of life left in them!

Standard set from early in the Mac's reunion tour with Christine. Lindsey outstanding as always. But the rhythm section needs to shake off the rust a little. Excellent recording (IMHO) with minimal audience interference. A couple of spots of static removed and/or repaired (thanks P and C) from level adjustments and bumps of the patch cable coming out the preamp.

This is one of the last shows before Buckingham and Nicks joined the band and changed the sound and direction of Fleetwood Mac once again. So many personnel changes over the years had given the band an ever-evolving sound that seemed to subtly change with each new album. This incarnation was on tour to promote their then new LP, "Heroes Are Hard to Find". They found themselves in the bizarre position of having to declare themselves "The Real Fleetwood Mac". Thousands of people had been duped into paying money to see what they thought was the "real" band. Thankfully, this didn't last long!

Recorded by dear taper brother Lars at Section C, Row 26, seat # 5, about 30 meters from stage left side. A few notes from the original accompanying letter: "My farest away show. Fun to be there. But Americans can't shut up. My fifth FM show in the fifth country! Full house at second night at MSG." Well, of course it sounds a bit distant, but he's very right with the chatty crowd. Luckily I wasn't there, cause I've would've gone mad, cause you know, as a taper you always HEAR the chatters ABOVE the music. Anyway, due to the seating and the usual low volume, this sounds a bit flat. Tried to increase the lower end a bit, but not to a real satisfying result. Anyway, all thanks to the mighty great taper from OSLO, Norway for this tape.

Notes:
A great opening night show and the welcome return of Christine McVie to the band. From the start of the vocals on The Chain you could already tell how much Christine had been sorely missed from the lineup of the past 17 years. Highlights were You Make Loving Fun, Little Lies, and Songbird. I was hoping for a performance of Hold Me but unfortuantely it wasn't to be.

I stuck by my rule of not paying more than $100 and settled for a ticket in the very last row of the nosebleed seats facing the stage. The sound was suprisingly good and not having people on either side of me helped keep the close audience noise to a minimum. The bass was high and a tad boomy from my location so I EQ'd it to level out the frequencies as much as possible. Its not a perfect recording but will suffice until something better (hopefully) comes along.

A very old show has just popped up! Probably the oldest F-Mac I have ever seen! This one is from a FM source (I think). There’s also other tape-sourced CDRs from Fleetwood Mac in Helsinki with more tracks, but they’re much worse in quality. This source is easily the best I’ve heard, some problems with the tape, but nothing serious. The band is tight and Peter Green is stunning for instance on Got A Mind To Give Up Living. Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer have their special moments, too. The sound is very good from that period.

Intro to the Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone Series

Welcome to JEMS’ Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone series presenting recordings made by legendary taper Mike Millard, AKA Mike the MICrophone, best known for his masters of Led Zeppelin done in and around Los Angeles circa 1975-77. Until this year, the Lost and Found series presented fresh transfers of previously unavailable first-generation copies made by Mike himself for friends like Stan Gutoski of JEMS, Jim R and Barry G. These sources were upgrades to circulating copies and in most instances marked the only time verified first generation Millard sources had been directly digitized in the torrent era.

That all changed with the discovery of many of Mike Millard’s original master tapes.

Yes, you read that correctly, Mike Millard’s master cassettes, long rumored to be destroyed or lost, have been found. Not all of them, but many, and with them a much more complete picture has emerged of what Millard recorded between his first show in late 1973 and his last in early 1992.

The reason the rediscovery of his master tapes is such a revelation is that we’ve been told for decades they were long gone. Internet myths suggest Millard destroyed his master tapes before taking his own life, an imprudent detail likely concocted based on the assumption that because his master tapes never surfaced and Mike’s mental state was troubled he would do something rash WITH HIS LIFE’S WORK. There’s also a version of the story where Mike’s family dumps the tapes after he dies. Why would they do that?

The truth is Mike’s masters remained in his bedroom for many years after his death in 1994. We know at least a few of Millard’s friends and acquaintances contacted his mother Lia inquiring about the tapes at the time to no avail. But in the early 2000s, longtime Millard friend Rob S was the one she knew and trusted enough to preserve Mike’s work.

Here is Rob’s account of how Millard’s master tapes were saved:

After Mike left us, I visited his mom Lia occasionally, usually around the holidays. She’d talk about the grandkids and show me pictures. She had no one to help out around the house so I did some minor improvements like fixing a kitchen shelf that collapsed and another time a gate that hadn’t worked for years.

After a few visits, I explained to Lia how the tapes were metal, up to 25 years old already and would eventually deteriorate. She agreed to let me take the tapes and make copies. We went into Mike’s bedroom and it was exactly like I remembered it when I was there years before. I loaded up every tape I could find and went to work copying them. Oldest first, some requiring “surgery.”

Months later when I was done copying, I compared what I had copied to a list Mike had compiled of his masters and realized there were many shows missing. I returned the tapes and asked Lia if we could see if there were any more somewhere else in the house. We went into a back bedroom and found a bunch of boxes filled with more original master tapes. I loaded them up, thanked Lia and left. This was the last time I would see her. I copied the rest of the tapes and stored the masters in a cool dry place until late last year when Jim R. reached out. We had known each other through Mike. After speaking with Jim and later BK who had tracked him down, I knew their partnership was the “right way” to get this music out to everyone who wanted it. I’m sure Mike would agree.

The old guy returns for a while...

This is in my opinion one of the finest Fleetwood Mac shows ever put on tape. Not only are you getting the group in its prime while riding high on the "Rumours" tour, you are getting a heartfelt, genuine performance as well. The entire group is at peak, with Stevie Nicks as a standout. She has never sounded better. She catapults both "Dreams" and particularly "Rhiannon" into the stars. The girl is on fire, and it shows.

Although labeled as "Mega-rare", this double boot LP along with the Jethro Tull title "A Sack Full Of Trousersnakes" sold out very quickly and was repressed several times. This torrent is taken from a nearly mint first edition on Dragonfly Records. But even if you have this album, your humble seeder believes you have never heard it properly. All copies of this show ran just fast enough to make the performance sound a little sick. I've corrected the speed to make the the album pitch properly. Even though this was just by a small amount, it makes a huge difference in the sound quality.
