09. Over Under Sideways Down

Notes by the uploader:
This is a recording of the Yardbirds in Santa Monica, CA. The source is a very low gen. cassette dub from Jan. 1986 which lists the recording date as 1968. However, I agree with this web page http://www.chromeoxide.com/yardbird.htm which says the actual date was July 22, 1967.
This is an audience recording. By modern standards it is terrible but keep in mind it's almost 40 years old. The main problem is the vocals are very low in the mix and distorted. Jimmy "Magic Fingers" Page comes through loud and clear, and the rhythm section is mostly audible. I slightly boosted the bass and cut the midrange with my trusty old 12 band equalizer, and tinkered with levels in Cool Edit Pro 2.1.

Notes by the uploder/trader:
This will not be released in the future 2 DVD Anthology, so get a fantastic quality version right now !! A friend in Canada sent this to me to convert to DVD, it's the greatest gift for my fellow ELP fans. This is ELP at their very best, riding the wave of commercial success and a creative apogee that would lead to Brain Salad Surgery and Works...75 minutes of PROG HEAVEN by the masters !!
There is a "Depas Publishing Co" watermark and splash screen, I would guess that it is a long defunct distributor out of Japan, I tried to dig up info about them with no success. An audio version of this is in circulation with Rhondo as the finale (of course), hence the odd running set list. Interviews follow the show. ENJOY !!

Recording Notes: In honor of the recent DVD release by the Rory Gallagher estate and Rockpalast (Rory Gallagher at Rockpalast which included the entire 10-6-76 Studio L Köln and the infamous, complete 7-23-77 Grugehalle Essen shows) I bring you this very nice sounding boot. This is Rory at his finest and most popular (at least for us "older" people) during this period, his guitar playing is amazing. From the rocking opening of I Take What I Want, to the jazzy Calling Card, into a slide guitar driven Secret Agent, Rory is flying! Tattoo'd Lady would become a concert standard and this performance shows why.

The acoustic set of Out on the Western Plain, Barley and Grape Rag/Pistol Slapper Blues and Too Much Alcohol shows Rory's different guitar styles from country, ragtime and blues.

The second electric set goes from traditional rocking blues (Garbage Man) to a rock standard (Souped Up Ford) and to the haunting Million Miles Away.

Additional Notes: Two of the tracks on this CD--Shin Kicker and Last of the Independents-are from the 1978 release Photo-Finish. I have not been able to determine if they are from this show (experimenting new material) or from a different show (7/18/79 Montreux 10th year show?). Either way, grab this, as it is a great performance of Rory and the band, tight and high-spirited.

tj7 notes:
Some tracks were split incorrectly, and there are some false starts here and there - but tracks 1-15 are from a very low gen source and sound great.

Carlo's notes:
" The tracking was madness, so I retracked this completely. I also removed those short silence gaps that were all around, but not on track boundaries. I hope I catched all.

This unfortunately is noise reduced, and obviously "mastered", but sounds much more better than what is commonly circulating and can be found on "3 ghosts caught in the act", and it has more songs including "King of pain", "One World" and "Don't stand so close to me". Last two tracks are from "3 ghosts" source and lower quality. They have been added (not by me) to have the most complete version of this rehearsals, but I understand they were not included originally in this version.

Please notice that there is some debate on the date and location of this rehearsals. "

Three days after the legendary concert behind the wall in East Berlin, Springsteen and E Street Band are guests in the still divided city in the west of Berlin. The show starts with "Badlands" like in the East, but this time also the title track of the tour is played with "Tunnel Of Love". Before the Bob Dylan classics "Chimes Of Freedom" Springsteen reminds of the newly won friends in East Berlin. "Born To Run" is performed by Springsteen acoustically and included in the setlist for the second time and for the last time is "The Promised Land".

***Remastered by exene***

I always wondered why the dvd audio of this show sounded better than the bootleg cd audio circulating in .shn format.
Both are from the same pro video source, but the two versions definitely sound different.
Spectral samples are included, as you can see the difference as well.
The .shn version cuts at 16kHz, but the dvd audio is clear up to 22.
This remaster is directly from the dvd audio, not the .shn source.

Fixed the drops in Gun and Ugly Truth, but there are still skips where the drops were.
Balanced volume levels throughout the show.
Added a slight fade-in/out at the start and end.

Great show, the video is a must-see.  Eddie Vedder sings backing vocals on Outshined.

Notes:
Nice pro shot video of a fine Soundgarden Lollapalooza set. Was apparently a cool day in July as the temperature coupled with the rain resulted in a massive fogbank coming off the bodies in the crowd. Sometimes it looks like the band is performing in the steamroom at the Y. This is probably the only time you'll see Chris play a song wearing a bright yellow hooded raincoat like we all sported in 1st grade. Chris plays quite a bit of guitar on this one. Unexpected pleasure - getting a 7 minute version of "Ugly Truth". Ben Shepherd is a nut on this one - flailing, spinning, goose-stepping, fighting - you get a bit of it all.
