Review: 
The bulk of High Heeled Sneakers on Godfather Records in the popular Hampton Virgina tape from Zeppelin’s seventh tour. Beginning with its appearance on One More Daze (DS92D046) on Dynamite which contains “Immigrant Song” to “That’s The Way” and its full release in 1996 on Tarantura’s Jim’s Picks (HAMP-1,2) to last year’s Hampton Roads Coliseum 1971 (Scorpio LZ-08019), there have been a myriad of different editions. The sound quality between all these titles is so similar that to single out one release as “definitive” really borders on being too pedantic. High Heeled Sneakers does sound very nice with a touch more bottom end that the older releases giving the flat sounding tape more liveliness. Unfortunately there are some digital clicks scattered throughout “What Is And What Should Never Be” not found on the others which ruins what is an otherwise very solid effort. If Godfather were to perhaps go back and fix this problem this could be as close to definitive as possible. 

Zeppelin collectors are well aware that there are some very painful cuts existing on this tape. The first verse of “Immigrant Song” is missing, there is a cut in the middle of “Dazed & Confused” eliminating the second verse, some minor cuts between songs, and ”Whole Lotta Love” with the encores are all missing totaling about forty-five minutes of music. It is a shame since this is a great show in the middle of one of Zeppelin’s greatest tours. Robert Plant introduces “Since I’ve Been Loving You” as “something a little cooler.” “Dazed & Confused” is referred to as “a little ditty from way back.” The versions of the piece in late 1971 contained several interesting variations from others. It was about this time where Page began to introduce the Bouree into the violin bow section as well as the descending drone over which Plant sang a high pitched moan. (A motif that is very effective in the first Tokyo show on September 23rd, 1971). 

This tape has one of the better-recorded versions of “Celebration Day” (a song that is very hard to find a clean version) and acoustic set. The playing is so relaxed it makes one wonder exactly how the concert ends. Godfather include the forty-five minute soundboard fragment from the Toronto show a week earlier. Unlike Hampton, there is tremendous depth and atmosphere to this recording which only exacerbates its incompleteness. This first surfaced in the early nineties on Jennings Farm Blues on Scorpio and last heard on Maple Leaf Gardens on Empress Valley, where it is edited with the audience recordings to great effect for the complete show. This is packaged in a trifold cardboard gatefold sleeve which is the norm for this great label and have several photographs from the era. Included also is a four page booklet with extensive liner notes giving the historic setting of these gigs. Overall this is a solid effort by Godfather which, if the problems in “What Is And What Should Never Be” on the Virgina tape were fixed, would be a sterling release. -Collectors Music Reviews

TMQ, TMOQ or TradeMark Of Quality was a bootleg record label that originated in the Los Angeles, California area during the late 1960s and early 1970s. TradeMark of Quality was established in 1970 by two bootleggers, "Dub" Taylor and Ken Douglas. Dub & Ken had released several albums under different names before settling on "TradeMark Of Quality" in 1970, the first being the (in)famous "Great White Wonder" by Bob Dylan. According to Ken, "Dub" recorded several of TMQ's releases himself, including The Rolling Stones' "Live'r Than You'll Ever Be" and Led Zeppelin's "Live On Blueberry Hill". TMOQ also employed the services of William Stout, whose unique artwork graced many of TMOQ's albums.

"Blueberry Hill" was originally issued before the inauguration of the TMQ label, so the very first pressings were on Blimp Records and were packaged in two single plain white sleeves with two insert covers printed in two colors. The album was subsequently pressed on the Trade Mark of Quality label and shipped to England. The album sold so many copies that many fans initially thought it was a legal record. The sleeve notes described it as "One hundred and six minutes and fifty three seconds of pure alive rock."

Live on Blueberry Hill derived its name from the fact that at this concert Led Zeppelin performed Fats Domino's "Blueberry Hill" as a final encore. The bootleg also features one of the few known live performances of "Out on the Tiles", a track from the group's third album. It also features "Bron-Yr-Aur", a song that wouldn't be released officially until five years later, on Physical Graffiti.

Added were the 2 missing 9/4/70 tracks from Three Days After. The show is now in original order of preformance and not in the original lp side friendly order.

Caveat Emptor: These are from 20+ year old lps and the inherent surface noise and anomalies associated with those recordings are present here, please remember the limits of the original medium when listening to these recordings.

This concert has been released many, many times over the years. This is its first CD release, from 1989, from the original Blimp/TMOQ tape (source 1). It sounds much better than the old LPs. This recording is mono and compares favorably to most others though I wouldn't say it's the best. The song order has been rearranged by the original producers.

The small sleek jet zooming Led Zeppelin into Toronto for a one-nighter was almost two hours late. When the jet finally touched down on Canadian soil, after a 55-minute flight from New York, there was less an hour to hustle through customs, climb into two chauffeured limousines and whisk through 15 miles of congested traffic before arriving at the backstage doors at the huge Maple Leaf Gardens.The private jet waited on the tarmac in Toronto while the group swept superbly through more than two hours of concert and then rushed back to the airport to fly on to Chicago. Less than five hours on Canadian soil for a fee of more than $50,000.

The latest Led Zeppelin tour – their fifth – includes only 20 gigs, but it will gross in excess of a million dollars. It will also substantially help to sell at least two million copies of the band’s new album which will be released within four weeks and is NOT called “Led Zeppelin 4”.

Before over 17,000 fans at Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens, the group performed three of the cuts from their new LP and they were all well received. But it was the familiar material – the rock classics such as You Shook Me, Communication Breakdown, Dazed and Confused, and the masterpiece Whole Lotta Love – which drew the heftiest applause.Despite the oft-heralded downfall of hard rock, Led Zeppelin is living, loving proof that although James Taylor is doing fine, he has quite a way to go before reaching the superstar success level of Zep or their U.S. counterparts, Grand Funk.Led Zeppelin drew their reportedly largest rock crowd (over 20,000) in Vancouver’s history a week before; they sold out Madison Square Garden in New York and they smashed box office records across the continent, proving yet again that the current scene has no act to come within a country mile of their popularity.We eventually arrived at the Gardens half an hour late, and Page was clearly concerned about the group’s lack of punctuality. People were pouring into the dressing room and talking louder and louder as Page tried to tune his axe to John Paul Jones’ bass. The noise had reached a distinct drone when Page suddenly turned around and told everyone to please leave.The road managers hustled around and cleared the room of all but a couple of people, which didn’t include a photographer who came down to snap the group receiving numerous Canadian gold disc awards.When Page and Jones completed their tuning, Bonham changed clothes and swigged from a bottle of beer, Plant downed a couple of lemon teas and squeezed into an embroidered vest which barely covered the upper half of his mid riff.Then surrounded by Police and security men, they hastened out of the dressing room and climbed up on to the nine foot stage which was presumably designed to keep the faithful at bay.After two encores and 140 minutes of music, the group climbed off stage, and jumped into the limousines and sped back to their jet.

Notes:
This source in general seems to be superior in comparision to Live In The Midnight Sun (TDOLZ) and Maple Leaf (Babyface) for the following aspects.

First it hasn't been eq'd to death usually the bootleg titles just amplify the hell out of the volume it brings out other unpleasant noises hidden on in the upper frequencies which is the case with TDOLZ release.

Second this seems to run at the correct speed and pitch whereas TDOLZ and Babyface seem to run a hair fast.

Third this contains the organ solo fragment before Thank You that is missing from all other releases as far as i know.

A great release by Electric Magic earlier this year. They did a fine job on this audience recording. I recommend this to anybody who wants to hear Zeppelin in their early years. I can only imagine how mesmerized this audience was after witnessing this show. :)

TRANSFER/EDITING NOTES:
Seeing as how I'm only a moderate fan of Led Zeppelin live, I'm pretty reluctant to acquire live shows unless they're nice soundboard sources and/or from their best live period, which, in my opinion, is 71-73. Nevertheless, it's hard to argue that this performance, along with many other performances from the same tour, is outstanding. Zeppelin are completely on their game. Even Plant sounds great, rarely singing out of tune or fumbling with the lyrics as he's so prone to do. The sound quality is excellent for the most part, being a nice mono soundboard, patched where necessary with a fairly good audience recording. The sections of the show that are audience are listed above. I decided to remaster this recording because I knew with a few slight adjustments it good go from being very good to great. Hopefully you feel the same way. I have remastered both the soundboard and the audience sections. No noise reduction/limiting of any kind has been used. The extent of my work is done in careful equalization. The recording now sounds brighter and crisper. Some people will like the original Empress Valley source better as I know my remasters are not for everyone. This is probably my favorite Zeppelin boot as of yet and will get many repeated listens at high volume from my stereo! Enjoy!

It's a Wonderful performance, all of the 1971 tour was incredible, but there was just something special about the performances that lead to the closing of the North American tour before they did their stint in Japan. They played with such intensity and had such passion for what was then the new material, it's great to hear them play staples like " Black Dog" and " Stairway To Heaven" with the passion they had when they first recorded it. The soundboard is one of the best out there, perfect distribution of all the instruments and vocals, it's crisp and bright, and very warm, you can feel like you're right there on stage, there's even moments where you can hear comments from the audience where others totally block out the crowd. The audience recording is slightly distant, they did the best job they probably could, and Empress has tried to match the sound of the audience tape to the soundboard to try and make the transition from the tapes as smoothly as possible. It's not that bad a tape though, no chit chat from the taper or the crowd, but the they did fiddle with the mic and the equipment during the acoustic set, mostly on " That's The Way", that would really be the only flaw in the tape.
