boombox's notes july 2015:
These annual mini Camel tours are quickly becoming one of my highlights of every year since 2013. Unsurprisingly, these shows all pretty much sold out, but I got my ticket as soon as they were announced, so bagged the end of the second row in front of a stack, thinking it a great position to get nice and close to Andy et al, and hopefully where I could get a good recording and some photos and video. Unfortunately, the Forum staff were not the friendliest, pouncing on anyone they saw with a camera. This was a pity as they really did put on a full multi-media show, with excellent lights and some fine 70s-style projections, which would have been lovely to share. As for the setlist, it was a complete change from the previous two outings, with no Snow Goose at all (though St Alban's the previous night got some in a second encore). A much rockier set (Andy told me afterwards that they were trying to do a setlist better suited to the various festivals they are playing this summer) and tough to pick favourites, but special mention has to go to 'Ice', which got a trully well-deserved standing ovation and a fine, bittersweet, 'Long Goodbyes', which featured projections of Chris Rainbow and Guy Le Blanc, who we lost earlier this year. I've included a small folder of the few half decent pics I managed to snap as a memento for those there who weren't so lucky!

As for the recording, it's pretty good, I think, despite the PA being suspended quite high, so back in about row 10 might have been a better location. To compensate, I added a bit of a mid-range hump and took out some of the bass - when Denis hit the floor toms in the louder passages, it was causing my chest to vibrate quite uncomfortably - it's a miracle my mics coped with it. I had to reduce the level of some of the whoops, hollers and clapping of my very enthusiastic neighbour and used just a tiny bit of compression to tame some of the peaks. As always, my 24 bit masters are available for anyone wanting to do a remaster/matrix project: just make sure it's shared here for all to benefit, please.

notes:
Coming off the successes of Mirage and Snow Goose, 1976 saw Camel release another masterful work called Moonmadness. Each member of the band contributed compositions to the album which reached #15 in the music charts. Camel had an extensive tour of the United Kingdom in March and April of 1976 to coincide with the release of this new album. The addition of Mel Collins on Sax and Flute had changed the Camel sound. His inclusion in the band at the beginning of this tour had given Camel more of a jazz feel. This was also the first time that Camel had used film as a visual component of their shows. As Andy Latimer told Melody Maker, "This is the first time we've used films, and I don't want us to get into it too much. ...We're not a very bopping band, so it's nice for the audience to have something to watch". A short break followed the 17 concert, U.K. tour after which Camel came to California for a performance in San Francisco at the Boardinghouse on June 26th. This was their first US performance in over a year and their last until February of 1979 when they again returned to play in California.  Six of the seven new Moonmadness album songs were played that night. The concert begins with two of the new entries. The audience is then told that they are about to get, "a little slice of the Snow Goose". The first three songs of that all instrumental album are then played with received with great enthusiasm. The band returns to Moonmadness material playing Air Born and Chord Change. They then proceed to The White Rider from Mirage, Lunar Sea from the new album, two more from Snow Goose and then a final selection from Moonmadness.

One of the earliest live recordings, this is dampened mostly by a slight fuzziness in the sound, typical of a tape transfer.
Not tape hiss, so much as a feeling that it was overmastered.
But it's a good show, with the band kicking on all cylinders.
There is a slight drop on track 6 and some minor level issues on track 5, but otherwise a reasonably clean soundboard.

This is a very good, near mono, off-air recording from very low-gen (if not master) analogue tapes. It is clear and clean, although somewhat compressed. Two off-air analogue versions of this were used to assemble the complete broadcast, including 'Tell Me' and full intros, omitted on some traded versions. This has been pitched correctly, and slight eq balance applied.

Notes from the PRRP Re-Master: As good as this recording is, there were still a number of flaws that needed correcting.
The speed of the recording was found to be in error and was fixed.
A gentle noise reduction was used to allow more subtle detail to be heard.
Lots of tape clicks and pops were found and repaired. Because of the venueacoustics, an adjustment to the tonality was made.
Dynamics were adjusted and channel balance was corrected. Finally, the show was tracked using standard live and studio references.

1. Consistent speed error detected and corrected.
2. Gentle noise reduction applied.
3. Lots of clicks and a few pops repaired.
4. Dynamics adjusted.
5. Correct Channel imbalance.
6. Adjust Tonality.
7. Re-track using commercial references.
8. Friendship segment of Snow Goose not in recording. Not played?
