Peter Hammill - 1985-07-18 - Colchester, UK (AUD/FLAC)

(Audience FLAC)

Peter Hammill
(with Guy Evans)
WOMAD Festival
Mersea Island
Colchester, UK
19 July 1985

Source: Audience recording.
Lineage: CDR Pioneer PDr509 > EAC (secure mode) > Soundforge (editing) > Flac (level 8, SBE)
Editing:
- Crossfade some of the fades and jumps in the audience noise.
- Some longer sections of audience of noise have been cut down.
- The end of 'Patient' cut off, so I added a very short fade.
- The cheering before 'Flight' didn't seem to fit after the end of 'Patient', so I faded in at the start of Peter Hammill's introduction.
- The first 2 minutes of 'My Room' were muffled and lacking treble, so I increased the treble and normalized the levels.
- 'Again' also had the levels normalized, as it was a bit quiet.

More than a bootleg, the best video document with the Quartet. Here there is not the first DVD (as signed on vapp.de), including some interviews, but the show is complete and it is a great document with great versions, clear and very passionate, from the first, fantastic version of Easy to Slip Away, to the powerful guitar set. You can see here each movement of the single musicians, every facial expression. A must have.

Please note that this is completely new set of Flac files.

Notes on the upgrade, done with Rene's permission.
I have removed glitches and clicks from the original recording, especially in Flight which had some very harsh clicks. There are a few less harsh clicks towards the end, but I was unable to isolate these from the vocals and cymbals.

Rene supplied a complete audience recording of 'Patient' which I have mixed into the end of the track to complete it, and also back mixed the atmosphere from the audience section for a few seconds to make the transition less noticeable.

The audience noise has been made continuous and any DJ talk removed.

The tracking has been changed so that each track mark is at the start of the music.

I have made new artworks for the recording which can be downloaded at:
http://www.zen164487.zen.co.uk/phrt1.html
or by browsing at:
http://www.jamielochhead.co.uk/ (where my website is moving to)
Please respect the copyright on this design. Additional credits are on the back insert.

Rene and I are working on further upgrades of all five volumes of the Radio Tapes series, and may extend this to other recordings.

Lineage: original torrent:
recording date(s): 1984
lineage: FM radio --> Denon HX Pro Tape deck, Maxell MC tape Dolby C --> Pioneer CDr recorder --> WAVE --> FLAC

additional audio edit in Soundforge to remove clicks, glitches, to cross fade audience noise and remove any DJ talking:
--> Wav --> Soundforge --> Flac (level 8, sector boundary aligned, verified)

Rene's notes from the original torrent:
In 1997 I had made for friends and myself a series of CDr called the Peter Hammill Radio Tapes Collection. This consisted of transferring the best (FM) of own Hammill tapes to CDr. Mostly these recorded by myself from Dutch or British radio. Though these were for friends only, it’s now sometimes being sold as bootleg. The series consisted of 5 volumes and I had made some simple artwork at the time (using PowerPoint).
...
This Volume 1 also remains a fave of mine bacause a) first Hammill show though I'd been buying VdGG/PH since 1977 and b) excellent FM sound quality (better then the well known bootleg of this gig): Utrecht, Vredenburg 1985.

From the 1997 “artwork”:
Amsterdam, Sunday 8 April 1984, the famous Royal Theatre Carre:
This was my very first Peter Hammill Live Experience and I bit the bullet for the second time. KRO radio broadcasted nearly the entire show. This is a first generation copy with unsurpassed sound quality(helas not for Flight: there are only audience recordings). There also exists a very good bootleg CD -A Stranger Still- which however lacks the last three songs included here.

KWST (FM) Radio Broadcast
82 minutes

This is something I have been looking for since I first discovered torrents. I recorded this off the air in 1978, then lost the tapes in storage for years. Thinking "I would just download a more complete copy from somewhere".
All six shows are now circulating (3 nights, 2 shows a night)
Thanks to T,
Only the early show from Feb. 4th is from a radio broadcast.
But different from this one.(First live broadcast I would guess).
This recording is from a later rebroadcast that used both the early & late shows, of Feb. 4th. And used the late show for the first two songs.

I have compared this recording note for note (matrix) with the audience recordings to be sure and to set speed/pitch.

This new version adds:
Complete version of "Afterwards"
and almost 2 songs from the late show now from FM
This does not replace or upgrade any previous releases. It stands alone.

This is the way it was rebroadcast,

03 - In The End**
04 - Time Heals*

Original Notes:
Back in 1988 the Pawn Hearts Society put together two sets of tapes "Fragments Out Of Time" and "In Still Life". Between them there are live recordings of over 130 songs, at least one version of almost every song that Hammill or Van der Graaf Generator ever played live between 1970 and 1986. In total, there were twelve tapes, roughly 18 hours of music. Only one song was duplicated on the eight Fragments tapes; In Still Life had alternate versions together with a few songs that were missed off Fragments due to lack of space.
(A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers was deliberatly left off the tapes as the only version that exists is the well known TV performance.)

The performances are arranged chronologically, as much as possible by grouping of period of performance. Songs that were rarely performed tend to show up in the period in which they first appeared on vinyl. As you would expect the sound quality varies, I would grade most of the tracks as B/B+ with some slightly better, and some - mainly the early Hammill solo performances - generally not quite as good: their main deficiency being some slight tape hiss.

I received a cd-r copy of these tapes (#95/100) a few years ago. I have removed tracks that have been officially released on The Box and Margin+ and slightly re-ordered the running order to maintain the period chronology once the tracks were on 80 minute discs instead of 90 minute tapes. Where space permitted I've
added additional tracks from the appropriate period. Some of these are alternative versions but others are ones that were simply not included on the original tapes: these were identified in a review in the Pilgrims fanzine having read the article I went out of my way to trade for copies of the shows where the missing songs were performed. I have not replaced any tracks with newer versions of the same show (e.g., the Basel 72 tracks are the ones I originally received rather than the calayx1 remaster).

There were some speed problems on the discs when I received them, which I attempted to correct through a combination of listening and comparing the running times listed on the tape artwork, although the latter couldn't always be relied upon. The first 12 volumes were torrented on STG in late 2003/early 2004 by someone who received an audio copy of the discs from me. This flushed out a few more speed problems which I have - hopefully -fixed.  For this version I have made a few more corrections, using other versions of songs as a comparison.

In all there will be sixteen discs to this set - the first ten cover the Fragments tapes and the remaining six In Still Life; these come from the original shn files I circulated which I have now converted. The tape artwork includes comments as well as the original track listing. (included in a separate rar file)

Thanks go to all the tapers over the years, the pawn hearts society, the original  seeder and anyone else involved in producing or upgrading this set.
