Fantastic Scorpions set from Uli, my second time seeing the maestro himself live in just under six months - I couldn't miss the opportunity to see him playing a full Scorpions set. 

This was a fantastic gig in a small, intimate venue, a 2 and a quarter hour set recorded just in front and to the left of the mixing desk. 

Besides doing a fade in/out at the beginning and end of the night, the only other edit was to remove about two minutes of my other halfs' drunken wittering at the start of the encore break. Normally, I would prefer to share the full recording uncut but believe me, in this case a small edit was a major enhancement to the overall listening experience

This show was the first time Uli Jon Roth had ever played a gig in Nashville, Tennessee. It was in a small club on the East side and to be honest, my first time seeing a show there. The crowd was very small (maybe 100 people or so) which is a bit of a shame for the talent that was performing that night. Andy Timmons (formerly of Danger Danger) and Jennifer Batten (Michael Jackson, Jeff Beck) played great solo sets and then played with Uli on stage for a couple of songs. I was a little surprised at how short the setlist was, but with the songs stretched out to over 8 minutes for most, it was worth it. The setlist was purely Scorpions plus Dylan/Hendrix at the end. 

Before the show we were waiting out front for a few minutes before the doors opened and Uli just walked out and introduced himself to the group I was standing with before saying he was tired and wanted some rest to recalibrate himself for the show. After the gig, my VIP pass allowed me to stick around and meet all three guitarists and get a few things signed. Uli graciously signed my booklets for Fly To The Rainbow as well as my booklets from the 50th Anniversary remasters of Taken By Force and Tokyo Tapes. I also got a picture with him. I've met a few star musicians in my day and he's certainly one of the nicest, most approachable people I've met.

The band was very loud (I would even say louder than Motorhead) and I did not think that the recording is going to be any good but it came out pretty good. The place was unfortunately half empty so I had great spot up on the balcony. They played for 2 hours and 35 minutes, great set and amazing performance.

Scorpions these days are mainly associated to Siegfried Schenker and Roy Meine hanging around in TV shows and telling stories. But they used to be the cool band who played any Uli Roth song no matter how weird it was, giving us some psychedelic, proggy and other music which are not exactly typical Scorps style. So here he was, playing this crazy shit. 

To my understanding there was a different lead vocalist at the beginning of the tour but for some reasons guitar player Niklas Turman simply took over the Klaus Meine part - after having played and sung for 45 min with his band 'Crystal Breed' as opening act. This guy must be a jedi or something. 

I must admit the 'Uli Roth era Scorpions'-synapses in my brain have grown in the 80s. They still work, but there won't grow any new ones - so I loved every song I knew but the two 'taken by force' songs I wasn't familiar to (2,9) were a bore for me. Fair deal - I had to leave my own birthday party for this concert and the guys did their best to make it worth while. 

Some let-downs: Three Hendrix songs are ok, but not if they push 'Polar Nights' from the setlist! Plus: I like (yes) Uli's voice, but only when he sings his own songs. And the drummer was good at the Scorpions stuff but he was definitely no Mitch Mitchell (though he did a great job on the 'Little Wing' tom fills). AND: Man, some 'Electric Sun' songs and I'd have started floating! Ule 'Smiler' Ritgen was in the room!

Notes
In October there were two concerts inside the Cologne’s most well-known prison - the Klingelpuetz - which were being broadcast by Radio Luxemburg. Electric Sun performed twice in a row for a truly captive audience - once for the male inmates and once for the female ones and were being enthusiastically received. The whole thing was a very unusual occasion and had a touch of the surreal about it. Uli had bought a new black Fender Stratocaster that day, which Sidhatta brought from Hamburg just before the show.
