JEMS REMASTER NOTES:
As a Roxy fan of both their early and later days, Wilky_Way's post a few months ago of this heretofore uncirculated soundboard from the last night of the Flesh & Blood tour was a real treat. The recording sounded very good as is, but there was something about the sound that led me to wonder if azimuth-adujusted playback on my Nak might yield more from the original cassette. I wrote Wilky_Way who was kind enough to send me his source tape (a TDK AD-90). I did a fresh transfer last month and there's a marked improvement in the high-end, imaging and overall punch. I did a tiny bit of work with the finalizer to raise levels and apply just a touch of mastering. A-B comparison MP3s are included.

ORIGINAL NOTES:
Splitting the set after Dance Away gives a good balance of songs on each disc, but it's up to you if you prefer to fill up one disc and put the remaining tracks on disc two.

For this, all tracks and sources were mixed by myself from my own collection, using Sony Sound Forge 10 with accurate pich adjustment and normalisation.

Converted from WAV to Flac (level 3) with Fairstars ripper.

I have used three sources for this - notably my master cassette recording, which saw A Song For Europe and Do The Strand broadcast for (I believe) the first time. The cassette was ripped to CD using a Philips DCC730 which offers automatic head alignment, so the quality is excellent.

I left the flac-files as they were. A pretty decent recording of their "Eno-phase" and apart from the BBC recordings and the German TV Musikladen live shows amongst the best recordings of this era.

In my opinion a very good audience tape from early Roxy Music with Brian Eno.Slight hiss, the tape is 32 years old,but great music and amazing version of Bogus Man,Ladytron & If there is something. Re-Make,Re-Model incl. a short guitar version of the german National Hymn,Mr.Manzanera played this version at the first german Roxy Music tour.

Total Time 83 minutes 59 seconds

The worst:
Tape flip in "Still Falls The Rain" and is at 29:24. The recording goes to mono at 29:18 and returns to stereo at 29:44. "Mother Of Pearl" had a couple dropouts removed at 31:19. During "Love Is The Drug" there were 2 breaks close to each other. Removed about 5 seconds to make this seamless. Between 54:41 and 54:43 (during "Ladytron") there is 2 seconds of static from FM interference. Next tape flip is during " In Every Dream Home A Heartache". A little of the solo was removed at 61:49 to make a cleaner splice. That is the bad stuff that I worked on to make this more presentable to you.

[83:49]

This is from a cassette tape that I copied from my friend Tim Sharp in 1979. An excellent performance captured by a live FM radio broadcast. Two thirds of this is recorded in mono with the middle third in true stereo. It may have been that the mono switch on Tim's receiver was used to improve reception.

Copied from Tim's master "off air" cassette to my Revox B77 reel then to my Sony DAT recorder at 16/48. Transferred to 16/44 wav files and cleaned up numerous dropouts and defects with Audacity. With the exception of the tape flips you will not even notice them.

The bad:
Tape flip in "Still Falls the Rain" and is at 29:24.
During "Ladytron" (between 54:41 and 54:43) there is 2 seconds of static from FM interference.
Next tape flip is during "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" which was spliced at 61:49 or 5:26 of track 12.
Although a couple of seconds were lost the splice is nearly transparent.

The phase was off by 20 samples of which number were removed from the right channel to line this up. An immediate improvement in the sound balance was noted after this correction. Before correction the right channel was very weak and it affected my first torrent of this show.

The Roxy Music show was taped from a local FM broadcast. I was at the concert and my sister taped it for me (it was in a small Omaha venue called The Music Box. It sold out quickly, and the label allowed the FM broadcast). This is the master copy. You'll hear the phone line interference at times (the FM station was in Council Bluffs, Iowa, across the river from Omaha).

comments:
this recording now includes the closing radio comments, along with the whole concert and opening radio comments before that. Roxy had last been to the Orpheum in Boston just about 3 years earlier (for another WBCN broadcast). this one was on the tour of their splendid 1979 album "manifesto" which had a few shows in the U.S. broadcasted. since this was recorded on one side of a reel, there is no tape flip interruption, and no commercial interruptions either. it's all an uninterrupted recording, maybe one of my most often played reels, but it's still a reel, and those rarely get played. A very nice show, to be enjoyed again and again.

notes on the remaster
Here is a very special treat courtesy of one of my best friends of the last, oh, 25 years, my pal Irin, a professional soundman in Brooklyn, NY. He was kind enough to send this to me, it was taped directly off the radio (WLIR-FM, Garden City, NY) by him in 1984, and it's a b-e-a-s-t!

All the bootlegs I have ever run across of this performance are all from multi-gen tapes and sound horrifyingly compressed... the one on the Scorpio label ("Wild Weekend") suffers from a ridiculous amount of compression and contains practically zero high end, whilst the other one I have (remastered by NoSpEx in 2007, I believe, from another source) is also from a mulit-generated tape and suffers from a pervasive clipping & distortion in the low end due to what he described in the notes I saved from that torrent as a faulty original digital transfer over which he had no control.

So, given that the performance contained herein is such an indisputably ripping scorcher, it seems appropriate to finally get this puppy circulating from a bona fide first-generation source, thanks to Irin. In this remaster I stayed away from EQ and noise reduction and whatnot, especially because of the other versions I mentioned where such things are prevalent to the point of intrusiveness. Bottom line is that this tape has survived the last quarter century in terrific shape and I really felt it didn't need any artificial enhancements, especially since Irin's transfer was so well-done & tasty to begin with.

All I changed was a few repairs of the isolated static (not too many, maybe twice in the whole show) and some channel dropouts and whatnot. The tape flip (first few seconds of "Both Ends Burning") was patched using the aforementioned NoSpEx remaster, which I EQ'd paragraphically to get a closer sonic match with the main source (not easy because they were very different-sounding indeed). Hopefully it isn't too intrusive, but at any rate it's just a few seconds so no worries.

Someday, a pre-FM master of this will surface... a while back when whoever it was was torrenting all those WLIR masters I was seriously hoping for this one but I guess he didn't have it, oh well. Until it surfaces this will probably be the best version out there, so give it a spin and see what you think... it's a massive upgrade over the other versions, at least, IMO.

New transfer: Sony professional cassette deck--->M-Box--->24-bit encoding to wav--->FLAC level 6 via Trader's Little Helper--->sendspace--->24-bit wav via FLAC Frontend--->16-bit wav via DB PowerAmp--->Sound Forge 9--->FLAC level 8 via Trader's Little Helper--->brother, can you share a DIME--->you!

PS--Irin runs a website-with-accompanying-podcast-of-excellence called Ambient Chaser, check him out at http://www.ambientchaser.com early and often, OK?

Thanks of course go to him for taking the time to record & transfer the tape, to Le Musique Roxy for burning down the Calderone like they did and thanks to you for downloading this most stompin' show.
