notes:
I did not recall how good REM were in the very early days! They really rocked and they sounded like a true underground band. I really had a great time to listen to this recording from RLR collection. The sound is actually great, the taper was probably located close to the PA because it sounds so pure and with little audience disturbance. First album, first tour. A few cover versions were slipped into the setlist.

Werchter Festival

Set of three different FM broadcasts. Separate, detailed info files are included in each part. An overview is compiled here ...

The complete setlist that day was:

01 - Feeling Gravitys Pull
02 - Driver 8
03 - Rockville
04 - Hyena
05 - South Central Rain
06 - Have You Ever Seen The Rain?

10 - Pretty Persuasion
11 - Life And How To Live It
12 - Talk About The Passion
(source: "Adventures in hi-fi: the complete R.E.M." by Rob Jovanovic and Tim Abbott)

I have two tapes from this performance, both taped straight from FM. The first one, from the KRO "Rocktempel" radio broadcast on August 31, 1985 includes tracks 1, 2, 9, and 8 . This recording was seeded here before in September 2007. The second tape, from the KRO "Leidsekade Live" Radio 3FM broadcast on October 27, 1996 only includes tracks 6, and 1. It has not been shared anywhere before.

And furthermore, back in June 2007 I downloaded another source from this same place, which was "recorded in the 80's" and includes tracks 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8. That set is included here as well, complete and unaltered. Thanks again to the original seeder!

So, from the 12-track setlist we now have 7 tracks: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, and 9.

Notes:
This is a TERRIFIC sounding audience recording of a classic pre-Murmur gig, at the Strand Cabaret in Marietta, GA. It's one of the best AUD recordings I've ever heard - at first I thought
it was a soundboard recording but you can hear too much audience chatter for that to be the case. Either way, it's a phenomenal gig, and it is from a very critical part of the band's career - many of the songs that would end up on "Murmur" were written during this time, and you can hear the differences pretty clearly here. "Perfect Circle" is debuted here and played with a drum machine - this is why it was dropped from the live set shortly after summer 1982 until the Green tour, when they could do it justice.

Pulled this out for a re-listen the other day and realized a couple things:

1) It's too slow - per Audition, it runs about 2% slow.
2) It's out of phase.
3) It's muffled and otherwise poorly EQ'ed.

Beyond that, it's a great little gig that took *very* well to remastering - this could fool many people into thinking it's a soundboard!

I'm not convinced this is a cassette master. The underlying sonics sound very much as if it was a reel-to-reel tape source, or perhaps an Elcaset machine (a short-lived successor to the venerable cassette pitched by Sony in the late 1970's that had better frequency response and sonics than the classic cassette format). There's a Joy Division gig (Jan 18 1980 Eindhoven, Holland) recorded on Elcaset that has similar sonics, which makes me think this too is possibly Elcaset.

First track of the set was Bad Day, which wasn't in the broadcast. This show was voted No.1 by the listeners of DRS3 as the best Swiss Festival show this year (QOTSA i seeded was No.2). This show is one of the all time greatest R.E.M. performances taken from a sweltering night in Seattle on the globe-trotting Little America tour. This show was recorded by the band for possible release as a live album but was shelved indefinitely because such a project just didn't fit with R.E.M.'s nonconformist and independent-minded ethos - live albums were soooooooo "corporate rock". Fortunately the tapes survived and we present them here in all their glory. This show provides THE definitive performances of so many classics like Radio Free Europe, Pilgrimage, Gardening at Night, 9-9, and Carnival of Sorts as the band rip through the songs with such breathtaking intensity and spectacular abandon that you'll throw away your studio albums for being pale imitations. Yet amongst the maelstrom and ferocity are exquisite and controlled performances of Old Man Kensey, the Velvet's Pale Blue Eyes and an incredibly emotional Camera that ranks as one of the finest ever performances by Michael Stipe.

This show is so good that when Peter Buck failed to get his copy of the masters due to a record company screw up he went out and bought the vinyl bootleg. Yes it is that essential and if not the greatest R.E.M. show of all time then it has to be in the top 3 no question.
