JEMS is happy to return to our Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone series, presenting recordings made by legendary taper Mike Millard, AKA Mike the MICrophone, best known for his masters of Led Zeppelin in and around LA circa 1975-77. For further details on how other tapes in this series came to be lost and found again, as well as JEMS' history with Mike Millard, please refer to the notes in Vol.

This is one of four previously unknown, unattributed and probably uncirculated Millard recordings (the other three were Bruce Springsteen shows from 1988 and 1990) provided to JEMS by BC, longtime friend of Mike the MIC who attended dozens of concerts with him over the years. 

It captures the third and final night of the Eagles’ Thank You Los Angeles concerts. Some performances from the shows were used on EAGLES LIVE, the double album released later that same year, albeit with a lot of overdubs and studio tweaking. It’s also the second to last show that band would play until reuniting in 1994 (the final show on the Long Run tour was Long Beach Arena on the 31st).

We presume Millard used the same gear as he did the previous year recording Bob Dylan at the same venue, and while the results aren’t quite up to that incredible standard, it is another typically impressive Millard capture, full, clear and mostly away from audience noise. Santa Monica Civic was something of a home court for Millard: he certainly knew how to get impressive results there.

While I would not characterize myself as a big Eagles fan, every time I hear a live recording from this era, I’m impressed not only by how beautifully they play but how charming they are on stage. They are a much better live band than I ever gave them credit for. 

As luck would have it, this same show was also recorded by John, Mark (the B-Man) and Mike, and posted by our pal Flying M Productions about six years ago from his own master tapes. Flying M’s post is the complete show; unfortunately the second of BC’s tapes has been lost, so we only have part one, the 100-minute cassette that Millard personally dubbed for him (and labeled in his signature style, which you’ll see in the artwork and the full cassette index label in the commments).

JEMS thanks BC for reaching out and not only loaning us his Millard first generation cassettes, but for sharing stories and helping fill in some gaps in the story of this legendary taper. BC says that the Mike Millard he knew would have loved the sharing community and the continuing interest in his work. Thanks as well to mjk5510, who helped make the connection to BC and, as usual, handled the last mile.

This is a very nice audience recording as the samples will prove. RIP Glenn Frey. I had to create an .md5, there was only the info file with an .ffp on the text and the tracks. I'm not sure which category to put it in, Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Rock n Roll...so i settled on Rock. Enjoy this, i am. So I'm sharing this here, just as i got it back in the day (around 2006 so new lineage is add the following to the lineage in the info: -> transferred to DVD in .flac form -> transferred to internal HDD -> used TLH to combine info, md5 and audio files into a torrent -> Dime -> YOU!) and have changed nothing below this intro. I used a Source 2 Patch on the following tracks. Which was also from a cassette walkman recorded from the lawn. Track 15 "You Belong To The City" for 25 seconds from 7:21 to 7:47. (It's after the song and during band member introductions.) Track 16 "The Boys Of Summer" for 31 seconds from 5:03 to 5:35. (crowd cheer only) Track 24 "Rocky Mountain Way" for 3:30 min from 4:20 to 7:50. Reason there was 3:30 minutes missing during track 24. I had to give the recorder to my friend while i searched for the bathroom. Needless to say by the time i returned, the lawn was a sea of darkness and there was no way i could see anybody more than 10 feet in front of me. My buddy Norman actually held the recorder during the entire tape side C. There are some mic bumps. He didn't have the thought to flip tape and probably didn't hear it shut off. Luckily I found him 48 minutes later, just in time to flip tape and catch the rest of the show. Believe it or not there is/was an Amateur VHS Tape of this show, that was being sold back in 1997. I wish now that i had paid the $25 for it. Yes, it was worth buying something's. I've never seen it listed again and probably never will.

Notes:

I was fortunate enough to see and record the Eagles twice on their 40-year "History" tour in 2013 and 2014. I was so blown away by the performance, I made myself go a second time. When we lost Glenn in 2016, I never imagined going to see them again and did sit out of the following tours in 2017 and 2018. I gave their live album a listen, "Live from the Forum MMXVIII" and was pleasantly surprised how great Deacon and Vince were singing these songs with Don, Joe and Timothy. Granted, its not the same as it was with Glenn, but still very powerful. I decided to cheap out and get a rear-side stage ticket at the box office 20 minutes before showtime for $99. I then went to find an empty near that side facing stack and found myself sitting with a bunch of folks from "Vet Tix". Before the show, everyone kept repeating how they wouldn't be there if it weren't for Vet Tix! Im not sure what the discount was, but it had to be a great deal! The older couple behind me were pretty bothersome during the "Hotel California" album performance, so I moved 2 rows down to row V during the set break. While this eliminated their chatter I had louder clappers next to me, which I did my best to fix in post. The one negative about this recording is how I wired myself up. I was running the SP-SPSB-11 in my rear pocket (not going to do this anymore!) and any time I moved in my seat you will hear static noise and or scuffling. I did my best in RX7 to repair these loud noises with a de-click tool, but all it ended up doing was smoothing out the spikes. They are still noticeable when they occur. Does it happen often? No, but they are in there. They are (for the most part) in between songs, but you will hear some light static noise during "Victim Of Love", the tremendous "The Last Resort" and "Seven Bridges Road". This is very minor, but it is worth mentioning when listening back. 95% of the recording is error free. The final 50-some minutes we all stood, so there is no noise present from that point on. This only happened as I was sitting down. I also applied a volume boost to the quieter songs and band speak so playback is a more enjoyable listen. You may already know Deacon Frey left the tour in 2021 and never returned. He officially left the band a week prior to this concert. The songs he sung lead on ("Take It Easy", "Already Gone" & "Tequila Sunrise") were reassigned to Vince Gill with "Peaceful Easy Feeling" going to Timothy B. Schmit. They both did a great job. I really wanted to hear Deacon Frey sing these, but I can always go back to the official "Live from the Forum MMXVIII" to get my fix. Please share with as many Eagles fans as you know! Enjoy!
