Notes
"This is an FM broadcast on Pittsburgh radio station WDVE. I taped it way back when and wore it out in my car's 8-track player. In the early 90's, my business advertised on the station; the sales rep asked if he could get me anything. I said "sure... have someone dig thru the vaults and find this show." He got me a nice cassette copy which I had converted to CD... did a few trades/trees over the years. Nice to see it make it here.
I'm a big JT and Jackson Browne fan. Lindley joined JT's "usual" group of musicians for this tour in the summer of 76.
His versatility adds so much to the song arrangements. The violin on Riding on a Railroad and banjo on Carolina In My Mind are two great examples. I love the lap guitar on Honey Don't Leave L.A.--Lindley and Sanborn's sax are incredible.
This is the best live version of Fire and Rain I've heard as Lindley makes his lap guitar sound more like a pedal steel.
After this tour, JT's musicians (Kunkle, Kootch and Sklar) joined Jackson Browne, Lindley and a couple of others for the tour which produced the Running On Empty LP.

1981 was a bad year for James Taylor. According to Timothy White in his article "James Taylor: Portrait of a Walking Man" (Rolling Stone #345) he suffered a crisis in confidence about his career, got to straits in his marriage that ended in separation and his depression was biting him strongest than ever.
He started the "Dad Loves His Work" tour, that would include the collaboration of J. D. Southern, with the project in mind of doing a Live album that was going to be called "Fish Scales" or "Bicycle Built for a King". Things didn't start very well as James Taylor had a pneumonia so grave that nearly made him collapse during the shows. But always a professional he never missed a compromise, as he has never done in his entire career. The Radio City Hall Concert of that year was recorded but didn't go so well as he should have expected probably, maybe because his comedic craftsmanship was amiss. I wonder if that was due to him having the pneumonia at that time. I don't know, but the fact is that the disc never saw the light.

Set-1 seems complete, but Set-2 might be missing a song or two. Overall there were many Volume Fluctuations to Set-1, and Set-2 was recorded too hot. I have adjusted the Volume overall for more consistant sound. Track 1-01 cut in abruptly, I removed -.05 seconds to smooth show intro. Track 1-05 has a click rhythm which might sound like static to some, but its not. Track 1-11 had fade-Out-> Fade-In at the end applause, I fixed that. Added fade outs to ends of sets Track 1-12 and 2-10. Finally the Jan 2007 Dime upload of the song "Sunshine Sunshine" had numerous dropouts in source file making it unlistenable. The original seeder then re-upped the entire set with the track fixed but had not been reposted in dime since 2007. I didn't think I should hold back this "Diamonds In The Rough" show any longer so I have deleted the damaged track from my fixed set.
Here's a great James Taylor show performing Solo in Cambridge Massachusetts in early 1970. Through the 2 sets James is loose, funny, and gives a story tellers background to many of the songs to a loving audience glued to his every word. The Original 2007 file set suffered from Volume Fluctuations, 1 damaged track, and cuts. I have Fixed and cleaned up the whole show to improve the overall listening experience. The show is Sound Board sourced and contains some tape hiss (Hear Samples). Many thanks to the original seeder Jitters. A great document of early James "Diamonds In The Rough", as always your comments are Appreciated!

An excellent quality soundboard from the 1982 tour that appears to be under-circulated. This one ran extremely slow and took a major correction to get to the proper pitch. It was also just a touch flat and I've widened the stereo spectrum to give the highs a little more headroom and I think it really shines.
A little context around the timing of the show, James mentions that he had been in Martha's Vineyard earlier in the day to bury his good friend John Belushi. Maybe it's my imagination but there seems to be just a little extra emotional edge to the songs on this night.
Venue was not identified but may be the Sportatorium which appears to host most of the bigger shows at the time which James surely would have been considered a big show.
