The first of two 'all-day' events previewing songs from 'Levitation'- the second on the 20th. If I remember rightly support was Nik Turner's ICU, along with Lightning Raiders, Androids of Mu and 'Out On Blue Six'- 
glam punks who had a lot of beer cans in their direction (oh well). 

Notable at the time for Lemmy turning up and (nearly) getting as much attention as the band - but not playing, and now as the last but one gig with Simon King.

This was a typically rough sounding recording of Hawkwind in 1973. It had loads of hiss. I decided to see if I could improve its 'listenability' for my enjoyment. I have processed it fairly hard, but that was necessary. Purists would not like this I know, but I wasn't doing it for them. They can listen to the unprocessed version and everyone is happy. What is really nice is that this is the earliest known master recording of Hawkwind that I know. Thanks goes out to those who made this tape available, nice one.

Audio Processing done in Adobe Audition on a Mac Book Pro.

Noise reduction - Noise floor -9db, amount of reduction -18db

Patch right to left at 3:31 to 4:11 (Side one only)

Mild soft knee compression.

Patch Left to right 20:05 to 47:21 (Side one only)

Tidy up beginning and ends.
Removal of tape start & stop speed noises at beginning and at encore.

Generally it was side one that required the most work. Its a shame that the last 27 mins of side one was made to mono. This was because the levels were so low on the right channel that it was all hiss when the levels were balanced.

There were al lot of what appears to be mic handling noise through out this recording - bangs and thuds that are definitely not from the stage. Most are in-between songs but that means they are during the spacey sections and very apparent. I manually tried to re draw the wave - using envelope and amplitude effects - this took ages and some results are better than others.

Concert Review:
Hawkwind’s gig at Birmingham’s Kinetic Play-ground appeared doomed right from the start! Nik Turner mislaid his alto sax and was forced to play all the alto parts on flute - which resulted in a distinct loss of fullness of sound. Then the roadie mislaid drummer Terry Ollis - but managed to pick up a last minute replacement in Pink Fairy / Pretty Thing - Twink. Fortunately Twink is a mate of Hawkwind from way back, and is conversant with most of the material. His major hang-ups occurred in “You Shouldn’t Do That” (which was taken much slower than usual) and “Born To Go” which disintegrated into a most enjoyable jam. To add to these
hang-ups the PA refused to function properly whilst guitarist Dave Brock spent as much time encouraging his equipment to work as he did playing through it.

In these circumstances it would be grossly unfair to be at all critical - especially as the band battled on for 75 minutes without making a big thing of thing of their problems. Many bands would just have given up. Apart from material from their current album - “In Search Of Space” - they played “Paranoia” from their first album and “Earth Calling,” “Silver Machine” and “Born To Go” next! Hawkwind’s entire act takes place in a doomy, gloomy, space -age atmosphere - shadow figures of the band lit up by flashing footlights - luminous symbols decorating drums and speaker cabinets - and a disturbingly hypnotic strobe directed at the audience. The music is heavy electronic, repetitive and compelling. The band’s claim that it is specifically aimed at dope freaks certainly seems to be valid - it rather flashes past we Tizer drinkers.
