July 11th 1969 was the last show the Velvets would play at the original venue for their "second home", the Boston Tea Party. This recording was made by the "Professor", who reputedly smuggled his reel-reel recorder into the venue under a large poncho. 

The sound quality of this recording is a bit rougher than any of the Professor's other VU recordings, but it's another great show. Fast and slow songs alternate, with "Waiting" clocking in at over 7 mins and "Run" a 15 minute feedback frenzy (the longest extant live rendition?). Even "Beginning" lasts over 6 minutes. Lou's vocals on "Pale Blue Eyes" are particularly nice (I wish he'd sung "Candy Says" in the same way rather than relegating it to Doug's sugar-coated approach). As usual, Sister Ray closes proceedings with a bang ".....this is gonna take a while....".

This is an utterly phenomenal show. The version of Hey Mr. Rain is one of the band's all-time highpoints. ALL TIME! Do you realize what that means? To the best of my knowledge this recording is not in circulation. I didn't record it, an old friend who I have lost touch with did. But I supplied the plane tickets, hooked up the guestlist [!] for the sold-out show [!!], 3rd row center seats [!!!], got us an apartment in Prague to stay at - a guy I worked with's mother lived in Prague and she was going to be out of town [!!!!]. The same guy also sent us to a restaurant (Obora) where I had one of the best meals of my life. Prague worked out great!!!

My buddy did the work once we were in the venue (I think we used my deck) and to give him his props he is the one person I have ever known that I would have trusted to do the work for such an historic show - and to do as good or better job than myself. But I feel like my contrbutions had a part in this recording even if I did not make it myself.

The recording is pretty amazing and the show even more so. I included scans of the ticket, which came in an amazing envelope - I copied both sides. You'll notice that instead of a seat number it says "host." When I finally found someone who spoke English they said "Anywhere in the first 3 rows." Man, it felt good hearing that. 3rd row was gonna sound better than first and be stealthier as well, so that's where we went.

OK, the concert is pretty awesome and I am sure it has circulated from different recordings. The Sports Palace is a small hockey arena - we were about 3 or 4 rows up on the side about halfway back, maybe a little more. There is some chatter here and there, but it is a very listenable audience capture, imho. The live sound was a little boomy just due to the room. Hey Mr. Rain was over 13 mins by this point, but by the next show in Prague it was over 16 mins. It had grown with each show up to Prague, then was dialed back a bit for the Paris shows. Coyote is missing - probably due to our failed attempt to make the last train.

Notes:
The sound is really excellent. There are some very slight flaws in the recording...an edit here and there (first couple of seconds of Sweet Jane are cut), but nothing that makes this less than a superb soundboard recording. However, there are some dropouts during the soundcheck.

I will say that Cale sounds great as usual (especially his piano on ATP) and Sterl's guitar lines sound as perfect as I have heard on any VU recording from the 60's. Moe is simply...Moe! Lou's voice sounds great (compared to today), but his phony banter with the audience is nauseating. I remember reading how before the reunion gigs, Lou was frustrated with the sound he was getting from his guitar on "I'm Waiting for The Man." He just couldn't get it to sound as powerful as on the records. Moe had to remind him that he used to ONLY hit the strings on the downstroke during that song!

This is a new and great sounding collection of Velvet Underground outtakes.

I suppose there is no contrast clause needed, as this is a compilation, but I did want to point out that everything here is 100% unreleased and didn't even make it to the deluxe editions. "Guess I'm Falling In Love" is a different performance than the one on the WL/WH deluxe. The same applies to the Matrix tracks, which are surprisingly good sounding Robert Quine recordings that were only discovered *after* the official box was released. The exact dates are not known for these recordings, so I did want to point out that they are definitely unreleased versions.

Notes:
The bulk of the songs that would become The Velvet Underground & Nico were recorded in mid-April, 1966, during a four-day stint at Scepter Studios, a decrepit recording studio in New York City. This recording session was financed by Warhol and Columbia Records' sales executive Norman Dolph, who also acted as an engineer with John Licata. Though exact total cost of the project is unknown, estimates vary from $1500 to $3000

Actual recording at Scepter was done rather quickly in about two business days (roughly 8-10 hours) while the third was spent listening to the material and the fourth was spent mixing. Soon after, Dolph sent an acetate disc of the recordings to Columbia in an attempt to interest them in distributing the album, but they declined, as did Atlantic Records and Elektra Records. Eventually, the MGM Records-owned Verve Records accepted the recordings with the help of Verve staff producer Tom Wilson, who had recently moved from a job at Columbia.

Scepter Studios acetate version
Norman Dolph's original acetate pressing of the Scepter Studios material contains several recordings that would make it onto the final album, though many are different mixes of those recordings and three are different takes entirely.

The acetate was pressed on April 25, 1966, shortly after the recording sessions. It would resurface decades later when it was bought by collector Warren Hill of Montreal, Canada in September 2002 at a flea market in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City for $0.75. Hill put the album up for auction on eBay in November. On December 8, 2006, a winning bid for $155,401 was placed, but not honored. The album was again placed for auction on eBay and was successfully sold on December 16, 2006 for $25,200.

It is important to note that ten songs were recorded during the Scepter sessions and only nine appear on the acetate cut. Dolph recalls "There She Goes Again" being the missing song (and, indeed, the version of "There She Goes Again" that appears on the final LP is attributed to the Scepter Studios session).
Though rumors have circulated concerning an eventual official release of this version of the album, this has yet to be confirmed or announced by any major record label.
However, a ripped version of the acetate began circulating the internet in January 2007. Bootleg versions of the acetate tracks have also become available on vinyl and CD

The Gymnasium soundboard tape(s)::

First track to surface from the Gymnasium tape(s) was Guess I'm Falling In Love (supposedly listed as Fever In My Pocket on the original tape box), broadcasted on WPIX FM by John Cale on June 3, 1979. After playing this version he clearly states that it is from a tape he stumbled across. He definitely says "Gymnasium, April 1967". Cale also said in some interviews he owns the tape of the entire Gymnasium show, including Walk It As You Talk It with a really good guitar sound.

Two others tracks surfaced in the 90s - Booker T. orginally appeared on the John Cale Paris S'Eveille CDEP in 1991 and was reissued (unfortunately with 8 seconds amputed at the beginning) on the Peel Slowly And See box set, along with an alternate version of Guess I'm Falling In Love. This version sounds clearly different as compared with the WPIX version and has some lyrics differences (the box set version begins with "I got fever..." while the 'old' version begins with "I got MY fever...").

> A magnificent CD compilation of the most legendary (and deservedly so) of all Velvet Underground bootleg material, Caught Between the Twisted Stars is a four-disc collection drawn from throughout the original band's career (plus the 1993 reunion), lavishly packaged, beautifully annotated by an epic 64 page booklet, packed with interviews and press reports, and just about all the live VU you could possibly need. From 1966, the legendary showing at Chicago's ~Poor Richard's, where John Cale took lead vocals from an unwell Lou Reed for "Heroin" and "Venus in Furs," appears in best ever sound. From 1968, the mystery-draped "Sweet Sister Ray" transforms the band's best-known soundscape into a "Pale Blue Eyes"-esque ballad; from 1969, the truly infamous and utterly devastating "guitar amp" version of "Sister Ray" explodes with such vivacity that even if you know it by heart, it'll still take you by surprise. The performance was taped, apparently, with the recording equipment connected straight to Lou Reed's guitar monitor, rendering band and vocals a ghost in the distance while unimagined chords, riffs, and solos slice the top off your skull. Elsewhere, "A Short Lived Torture of Cacophony," from a New York performance in 1965, turns out to be a gripping rendition of the pre-Velvets Reed composition "Fever in My Pocket," while a pair of performances from Reed, John Cale, and Nico's 1972 reunion at the Paris ~Bataclan, have a sparse, acoustic charm which stands in absolute polarity to everything else on the box. Occasionally across the four discs, the sound quality lets you down a little -- "Chic Mystique," a rare jam from early 1966, is essentially hiss and drum beat with dissonant ambience somewhere in the distance, while the oft-praised "Venus Heroin" medley is scarcely even discernible. So, not everything in the collection bears repeated listens, although it's interesting that the flattest moments actually come from the 1993 reunion -- and are, as such, the most hi-fi things in sight. Whether the original Velvets rehearsed regularly or not, in concert their every movement appeared to be a step into the absolute unknown. Reformed, there was no room for any kind of unexpected maneuver, and so they recite "The Gift" with weary familiarity, or plod through "Hey Mr Rain" like they left their umbrellas at home. Musically, it's exemplary. Spiritually, it's crushing. Such lowlights, however, are the exception. Regardless of quality, the performances from 1966-1970 (and 1972) not only capture some scintillating highs, they represent a band going hell-for-leather toward a level of artistic accomplishment which even they were only partially aware of -- and whose actual significance would not be realized for years to come. December 12th 1968 was the first show of a 3 night stay at the Velvets "second home", the Boston Tea Party. This recording was made by the "professor", who reputedly smugged his reel-reel recorder into the venue under a large poncho. 

This show has long been my personal favourite of all the extant Tea Party recordings. Lou and Sterling's guitar playing is outstanding, and Moe never misses a beat. "Move Right In" is just great - Sterling sounds just like a tape loop and Lou's "improvised on the spot" lyrics are tantalisingly almost intelligible. "Foggy Notion" is a joyful breeze, with buzzsaw guitars and fine vocals. Going by Lou's introduction, this would appear to be the first public performance of "Candy Says". It's certainly the only Velvets recording of it which I am aware of where Lou actually sings it himself - he cant quite reach the high notes but there's a certain weary tenderness to his vocal which I dont think Doug ever managed to achieve, live or in the studio. This is undoubtedly my favourite version of one of my favourite songs.

In October 1969, the Velvet Underground played a short residency at "The End Of Cole Avenue", a small club in Dallas reputedly owned by a rich Texan who could afford to invite bands he liked to come and play. The story of how local sound engineer Jeff Legood recorded 2 of those nights is probably well known by now. Suffice to say, some of his recordings from the show on 19th October were eventually used on the official release "Live 1969". His recording of the show on the 18th isn't as good quality as that of the 19th, but is still very listenable.

In the late 1980s, a fanatical Italian fan set out to locate Mr Legood and try to obtain the remainder of the recordings he had made. He succeeded, and DAT copies of the original tapes were duly made and passed on to Aulica records in Italy - these eventually resulted in 2 x 2CD sets which were initially issued in nice velvet bags, and subsequently reissued on vinyl.

This is the recording from the 18th October, which starts out very muffled but gets progressively better (after the band noticed Mr Legood at the back of the hall and invited him to move his equipment closer to the stage). I'm not 100% convinced that this is the correct song running order, but this is how it was presented on the 2CD set.

BTW a really excellent version of "Sister Ray" - starting out slow and dreamy but getting fast and furious before the end.

There appear to be a few digital mastering flaws on C but they are short-lived and not too intrusive.
