Notes:
This has been the rainiest summer in the Greater Cincinnati area for the past 144 years. The previous night of the festival saw a Mark Farner set get cut shortly after it began. The Lighnings Hand threatened this show, providing some background lightning but the weather held out and Kansas performed wonderfully for an approximate crowd of 8,000 people. Sycamore Township is a small suburb of Cincinnati and they put on a very nice festival for their community. Blue Ash gets the biggest names, but Sycamore is a very cozy event.

Notes:

Another excellent FM broadcast of Kansas during their Masque tour. This one's not as uncommon as the Villanova show but I'm sure it will be new to many people. For those already having it this will be a nice upgrade, since this version is crystal clear, sounding much better than the copies flowing around that have some songs cut. There is some FM static during Lonely Wind, but it's no big deal. Apart from that the recording is flawless. This show comes from a silver CD I obtained some years ago called "Kansas - A Tour Digest 1976". Besides this show it has the 1976-02-22 Villanova Field House show on a seperate disc. I'm almost certain both shows are incomplete since they clock in just over 1 hour.

Kansas Live At The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium 1977-01-14 Reel-To-Reel AUD Master complete show (First time in circulation) They sound like ELP at times, and like Genesis at others. They even play complex musical interludes... but to cast them off as another '70's FM band is simply wrong. Make no mistake, they aren't stuffy or serious about their music either. Check out the pre-wired band intros, or the fact that they are playing that Cossack Dance (btw, please provide track corrections!). This recording is from a much later time period than the 1972-3 concerts I have been posting from this group of master reels. Why there is a four-year gap I have no idea, but there you are. The recording quality varies from good to outstanding.

I'm really impressed by the quality and sound of this recording. The taper obviously knew what they were doing and did it very, very well. This is an excellent recording of a 1977/78 Kansas concert. The show began New Year's Eve and ended after midnight on New Year's Day. The band does the countdown to the new year right before "Carry on Wayward Son". This recording sounds a lot like a soundboard throughout most of the show due to the clarity and lack of crowd noise.

Did you ever wonder just how often a die-hard Kansas fan (you know, the one that travels oceans just to see them perform in their hometown) happens to stumble upon a previously undocumented pristine soundboard recording from the early days of the band? A date that isn't even listed in the most elaborate of Kansas tour dates archives? Speaking for myself, I can count the occasions on two fingers... The last time it happened was the Villanova Field House show. No, wait... that was an FM, this is straight from the mixing desk. And it's even from the year prior to it: 1975, the early stages of the Masque tour! To my knowledge it never aired. Well, about the show... it's short. Way too short, if you'd ask me. Kansas (together with Ted Nugent) was opening for Aerosmith at the Paramount Theater in Portland this night. So we don't get Mysteries and Mayhem > The Pinnacle or Lonely Street. But you won't hear me complain, because what's more important is what we do get: a raw & fast-paced, hard rocking show in a quality that almost rivals an official release. Yes, that's right: rivals an official release.
