While Mick and Keith conducted their own private Cold War, the Stones were off the road for seven years. Thus, the Steel Wheels US tour of 1989 met with feverish anticipation. By Atlantic City, they'd played to 3.2 million people, grossing $97 million; a pay-TV cablecast was watched by a further three million.
