Motley Crüe - 1985-10-11 - Buffalo, NY (AUD/FLAC)

(Audience FLAC)

Memorial Auditorium

No real lineage info here other than to say I got it off a cassette I've had for many many years. Thayt would make it cass (?) > Adobe Audition 1.5 (recording, NR, EQ, limiting, indexing) > TLH (SBE fix, flac 6)

Pretty good show. Contains an infamous Spinal Tap moment during the drum solo where Tommy Lee yells out "Hey Buffalo, you want it faster?" twice, then says "Hey Boston...I mean BUFFALO, do you want it faster?". Gotta love it.

08 - Stairway To Heaven

A good career spanning setlist in support of the Outrider album. It not only includes the majority of that album, but covers Zeppelin, The Firm and The Yardbirds as well as the Death Wish 3 Soundtrack (which Page introduces as Death Wish 2).

This show took a lot of work to make presentable. Karl must have been having trouble with hovering security, because he ducks the mic down several times and there are weird stereo imaging issues. Karl tried to chase out the quiet spots in the show (Blues Anthem and the beginning of Stairway, for example) by turning the record level up, then back down as it got loud. This was done imperfectly to say the least. I've corrected the level changes and also fixed the stereo problems as much as possible by adjusting the volume of the channels by hand, and I EQd the dull spots from the mic ducking as separate files abd faded them with the original ones (somtimes in multiple layers) to smooth out the sound a lot better than originally. There are still some minor changes, but it's far, far better than the master. What's left is more changes in the spatial orientation of the sound because the mic was moved than any repairable flaws.

I'm not sure why he doesn't notice, but Page's guitar is out of tune for over an hour. I should say guitars, because he switches to an open tuned guitar from Midnight Moonlight through In My Time of Dying, and that one is just as out of tune. Everyone who works for him must be so awed by or afraid of him to tell him, too (rumored evil powers, y'know).

I'm not really that impressed with Page's performance, but the singer, John Miles, is amazing! He handles the vocals of Plant and Paul Rodgers quite impressively, and I think he sounds alot like David Coverdale, foreshadowing Page's next collaboration. Whatever became of this guy?

Very Good Soundboard recording
Lineage: SBD > FM > ? > APE > Flac (Level 8)

Full spectrum, with slight rolloff after 21kHz. No hard rolloff evident, unlike other sources. Spike at around 15.4kHz indicative of a broadcast source. Audible noise floor suggests tape heritage.

NOTES
Jeff performs for the second time at WFMU's weekly music programme, 'The Music Faucet'. Without further introduction from ? Jeff begins, dedicating the show/song to ... ... ... then goes unusually into some politics:

'Calling You' is consequently aborted as Jeff forgets the lyrics.

Notes:
A nearly flawless soundboard master DAT clone. It is complete as far as I can tell, except for some audience noise missing between "Waiting For The Night" and "It Doesn't Matter Two". It sounds like there's a skip at the beginning of "Enjoy The Silence" but the same oddity is present on an audience recording of this concert.

Geetarz Comments:
An absolutely essential release of the Sao Paulo, Brazil show, which could be subtitled "The Attack of the Killer B (Three)". What a great mix, and prominently up front is Greg Phillingaines' wonderful, swirly, inside out, upside down Hammond B3 organ. Great version of "Got You On My Mind", and also a very nice "Change the World". "Sunshine" is a nice treat as well, and old Slowhand decides to rip off a nice solo over the break, perhaps surprising himself as he flubs the vocals after his solo! Greg also shows a fine sense of humor as well as a great sound, playing the riff to "Layla" during his organ solo on "Cocaine". "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is omitted from the radio broadcast, instead only the band introductions are heard.
This incredible remaster from the 3BR team is a massive improvement over the orignal radio show recording, not only because it now has far more dynamic range, life, and hiss reduction, but also because the annoyong announcer who kept shouting "Live Concert! Live Concert!" has been deleted from the mix! Don't miss this one...

Notes by the taper:

I traveled 500 miles solo to see Neil and the Horse since there are unfortunately no dates yet announced for the upper Midwest. Great, great show with the world premiere of a song tentatively called "Singer Without A Song".

I am very pleased with the sound quality considering my location in the arena. This recording is a testament to Neil's excellent sound crew.

My taping location was perfect since you can only hear an occasional clap in the distance with no talking whatsoever. The only voice you will hear is my reaction to hearing the first few bass notes of Tonight's the Night. I was hoping he would encore with it and sure enough he did.

Superb video and audio quality. Some of the effects used are gaudy, ridiculous, and unnecessary, and sometimes make the song nearly unwatchable (i.e. during most of "Angel" and "Personal Jesus"). The morons at ACL started streaming DM three-quarters of the way through "Welcome To My World". I'm insanely irritated by that fact. Hopefully they will rebroadcast the entire thing...

A great concert with a band eager to communicate with the audience as evidenced by what they put in the actual performance of course but also the long talks by Stevie (that one was a bit long!), Lindsey and Mick. I was expecting something very "slick" so that was a (refreshing) surprise as you rarely see big acts interact with the audience like this. It would have been perfect if Christine McVie was still playing with them, would have loved to hear "You Make Loving Fun", well she was back for a song recently, so who knows, she might be back later. The rest of the band certainly look like they have a lot of life left in them!

notes by the taper
Really good show for the first night in Dallas. The setlist has remained constant through this tour with Bernie Leadon playing in the first set and then the second encore.Joe Walsh has guitar issues during Funk #49 and Life In The Fast Lane and Glen Frey messes up the lyrics to Take It Easy but those are the only problems in an otherwise great performance.
