notes
The audience and soundboard recordings synched up nicely, so I was able to create a 5.1 mix using both sources. The mono soundboard soundtrack was remixed to stereo and sent to the front and center channels. The stereo audience recording, which highlighted both the crowd noise and bass, was sent to the rear and the subwoofer channels. The Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack is primarily from the in-house audio feed and should be used for playback through a TV sound system, where it may sound better than the 5.1 track mixdown.

Video quality is very good, looking like a transfer from the master VHS tape to DVD.

-- info from CBC:
John Prine is an artist in the strictest story-telling tradition of American folk music. His songs are rich with imagery; transporting the listener to a time and place unfamiliar, yet full of intimate emotion.
In the late 1990's he developed a cancer on his neck that required surgery and removal of a substantial amount of tissue. The surgery caused a change to Prine's voice, lowering his range and adding more grit. He's said with his new voice he's re-discovered some of his old material.
The concert was the closer for the 2010 Edmonton Folk Music Festival. A regular guest of the festival, John Prine had the audience intently drawn into every character in every story he told.

Show Notes:
Nice good energy show by the boys. Same setlist that they've been playing on thees run of shows, nothing too different. At least the drum solo (which I generally hate) made for a good transition to the acoustic b-stage set.

Recording Notes:
Pretty straightforward mix. No click track or backing tracks, just a straight up mix of each of the band member's IEM feeds plus audience. No available audience recording at this time. My spot would have had tons of screamers. If anybody knows of a halfway decent audience recording, let me know and I can see about mixing it into this set for a bit more crowd noise between songs. With the exception of crowd noise, this is very similar sounding mix to the one I released from Sacramento in March 2023.

An Eddie Edwards production.
From Eddie: "The work I did on the recording was to balance the channels, speed-correct the portion from GTC to WLL and remove any obvious unwanted clicks, pops and other noises. I did not apply any EQ, noise reduction or anything like that."

Immigrant Song drop-out patched by jameskg.

This is higher quality and more complete than "Peter's PA".
This is the best quality, most complete version of this show available to date.

This is one of Robert Plant's best performances.

TMP notes that this may be the first recording of Celebration Day played live, maybe even the first time played live.

Black Dog is exceptionally good on this night (both Jimmy & Robert are on fire)

Robert doesn't quite yet know the order of the verses in Stairway.

Points of this release that are of note:
1) Much less hiss. Better transfer.
2) SIBLY is complete, for the first time.
3) Speed corrected & balanced out by Eddie Edwards

Late summer saw part 2 of Lou's 1977 European tour. He would complete these dates before closing the year with some shows in Australia and New Zealand. Over the summer, Joanne Kamorin had been installed to provide backing vocals and Stuart Heinrich had replaced Jeffrey Roth on guitar. This was a difficult time for Lou: his relationship with Rachel was falling apart and they had several separations during late 1977. The binaural live tapes he had made in Germany earlier in the year had been rejected by Clive Davis and he would have to add some new studio material to them before they would be released as "Street Hassle". There were also other problems during the tour - Lou reportedly threatened at least 1 promoter, sacked his soundman "and kicked the monitors off the stage" during one show.

This recording historically circulated as "Mont De Marsan Punk Festival", but that festival took place on the 5th and 6th August. (One of the organisers of the Punk Festival was Marc Zermati, who was also (jointly) responsible for the the first Velvet Underground vinyl bootleg - "Evil Mothers"). I suppose it could be argued that Lou "headlined" the festival by appearing the next day.....There are long gaps between some songs (over 3 minutes after "Sweet Jane") while guitars are being re-tuned, and the audience get quite restless at times. Lou doesn't directly address the audience during the whole show other than to say a cursory "thank you" just before leaving the stage. He manages to fit in only 2 tunes from his last LP - the lightweight "Rock And Roll Heart" and a (relatively) lengthy buzz-saw rendition of "Banging On My Drum" - his ode to "drug masturbation". There are no "new" songs. "Kicks" gets the usual 1977 treatment - speed manic and menacing. "Leave Me Alone" also gets a long, long workout - possibly the longest available recorded version of this song.

This is a reasonable quality audience recording - the vocals are a bit muffled but there's not too much tape hiss. At least one other audience recording of this show exists, but it is incomplete and (in my opinion) inferior to this one.

I was at this gig and bought a cassette tape of the show sometime later in the Portabello Road Flea Market. This gig was 31 years ago and some of my memory doesn't match the tape. Could be me or who knows. Things like I always thought he played two nights at the Lyceum and not one. I thought the back up singer was Laura Teresa who sang back up on some Magazine bits and on Jerky Versions. Also I totally forgot the opening band was the Smiths and SPK. I know you can find a few Magazine shows but solo Hoard shows I think are not around if at all. I could be wrong though I am a complete beginner at Audacity so don't rake me over the coals. I may attempt a remaster of this show as it's Howard.

Original Liner Notes :
This concert footage was shot on three Betacam oxide (professional) tapes. It was shot by a pro crew (likely an MTV crew) but might have been hired by CBS records. The songs are all incomplete, and if some are only here in a very short part, some are still very enjoyable. There are several reasons for this. Clearly the crew had only one camera and was shooting for the purpose of B-roll editing, that is getting shots edited in between interview footage to produce one or more MTV segments news. The crew would have had no reason to shoot complete songs, much less the entire set. They may have also received clear indication not to record complete songs in order to prevent bootlegging. The last factor was that they only had three 20 minutes tapes which limited their capacities to record more than necessary. Also, keep in mind that the album had not been released yet, and the tour had not started. The crew didn’t know the new songs and had no idea of what would come next, neither in terms of content/interest nor in terms of visual event. That explains the many lingering dark shots. Also, don’t forget that this is raw, unedited footage. The source was originally supplied with the camera (audience) sound on one channel and the mixing desk sound on the second channel (except when the cameraman moved closer to the stage, no soundboard audio was available). We did a smart mix of both sources on one audio track and have kept the soundboard source on another audio track of this DVD.

This DVD offers for the very first time, the second, unreleased, part of the footage, consisting of the unedited interviews with (a very sarcastic) David Gilmour & Nick Mason, Robbie Williams and Morris Lyda. Further footage feature shots of the crew at work and more rehearsals.

All in stunning professional quality !!!

Notes
The applause was a lot louder than the music so I have reduced the volume of the applause to enable me to amplify the music to a reasonable level. This is noticeable in a few places but I can live with that. The music is what's most important. I hope it does not spoil your listening experience.

Blur played the final night of their intimate UK tour last night (August 7) at Plymouth Pavilions and treated fans to a hit-packed set.

The show, which will act as the final warm-up gig for the band's huge outdoor show at London's Hyde Park on Sunday (August 12), saw the band bang out a mammoth 26-song set.

Opening with 'Girls & Boys', the band aired 1999 album track 'Caramel' and 1993 B-side 'Young And Lovely' as they have done throughout their recent dates and both new singles 'The Puritan' and 'Under The Westway'.

The set also included hit singles 'Song 2', 'Coffee & TV', 'Beetlebum', 'No Distance Left To Run' and the closing 'The Universal' as well as live favourites 'Tracy Jacks' and 'Sunday Sunday'.

The band's setlist for their Hyde Park show is likely to be very similar, but bassist Alex James has previously told NME that a few of the rarer cuts may not make the set. He said of this: "I don't think you can really play two B-sides at Hyde Park."

You can read a full preview of Blur's Hyde Park shows and a full interview with Alex James in the new issue of NME, which is on newsstands now or available digitally.

At the end of December 2020, the shocking new audience source of Hakone Aphrodite was released by Empress Valley. It is a great discovery that will overturn the date of conventional tapes. In this recorder, Goro Itoi announces in Japanese after the show: "The first day of Hakone Aphrodite, the first day of today, it has ended successfully thanks to everyone. Thank you very much." This means that this is the true source of the first day. In Set The Controls For The Heart Of Sun, you can hear a rare performance of that playing The Embryo sound effects. Please enjoy the new cassette master source that has been discovered after 49 years.
