COMMENTS:
Great stuff! An insight to the early stages of the songs that later ended up on Black & Blue, Tattoo You and Undercover....and some songs they never "finished". I like the mood of this material....it sounds like a filthy and dirty studio in Munich - it's almost like if the hiss/unclearity suits the music (or maybe I just got used to it, through the years) DAC didn't do any heavy no-noise/degrading on this material....there's plenty of hiss and punch - the way I like it Haven't had the time to make a closer comparision with my other bootlegs (CDs and vinyls) - as I just recieved this one. Haven't compared it with the tape/torrent of this material, that was shared last year, either But....the quality is pretty much the same as always (mostly Very Good Stereo) (only compared "Crazy Mama" with the version on "Outtakes 1974-75", and the DAC sounds better)

Note: these tracks were received as a double cdr set in a trade, with tracks from three different sources. The original Wav files were not named (just Track 1, track 2, etc). I changed the track names after extracting, before compressing. The log files included here reflects the discs as i received them. 

I cannot detail the lineage, but I did check to ensure these are not from a lossy or cress-encoded source. The lineage I can offer is: 

Studio demos > cassette (unknown generation) > digital conversion > CDR > WAV files with extracted & compressed to FLAC level 8 (verified) with xACT 1.71. Log file & fingerprints included in torrent. 

I have removed "Country Boy" from this torrent. Although the overdubs are all different on the version released on "Jericho", the base track is the same, which violates two separate Dime polices of what's not allowed: 
- The audio of any performance used as the sound on officially released video material - even if the recording is from another source than that of the sound in the officially available material; 
- Remixes, remasters, alternate mixes, and alternate edits of any official material;

These are all different versions to the released album. These are said to be out-takes, but none of them are final mixes. There seems little overdubbing and backing voices are less pronounced. There's an almost live feel - rehearsals rather than out-takes. The bass is over-present throughout, a common problem with live recordings. As bass isn't directional it leaks onto every mic and over-amplifies itself. There rarely seem to be two drummers, and Garth plays a lot of accordion throughout the first half. These tracks can't have been sequenced as an album, as the four numbers with horns are in a row together. They might well be the earlier versions of the album with John Simon.

Levon lead vocal. 

Shine A Light 
Rick takes the first verse, then hands over to someone else for the next. This could be Randy Ciarlante or John Simon (who plays piano and does backing vocal on the final version) or someone unknown. Great slide guitar which was dropped from the final version. the unknown voice and slide guitar sound a lot like Colin Linden. 

Move to Japan 
This has a very live feel. Garth's accordion is prominent. 

Country Boy 
Richard Manuel. This is the older tape that they preserved for the final album. 

Night On The Town (Bruce Hornsby) 
Title track of a Bruce Hornsby album. Lead vocal is Randy - Rick and Levon can be heard in the background. It starts with 'shave and a haircut- two bits' rhythm. Then this version takes too many directions and is ultimately too messy to get anywhere, There's a great bit of wild Garth organ.

'tikki tikki' birds sound effect starts before Same Thing finishes and runs right into this - suggesting some post production effort. Rick sings. 

Atlantic City 
This has some odd and interesting breaks where only a drum flourish is heard. A nice idea that got dropped (probably for the best though). Levon's vocal is not quite as subtle. 

Circle of Time 
This is new and it's a loping mid-sixties style soul influenced song. Think about mid-period Robert Parker or Levon & The Hawks to get the feel. Rick Danko sings lead, supported (I think) by a female singer. The prominent instruments are bass, drums and guitar with less piano and a touch of synth with a horns sounds. I'd guess an unfinished demo rather than a finished out-take, the bass is so over-prominent that it can't be a final mix, though all the elements are there. Jim Weider bends some very un-Band like guitar sounds. If this had made it through to Jericho. it would definitely have been one of the best tracks on the album. The bass on Circle of Time doesn't sound like Rick Danko; my guess is that it's Rob Leon. Guitar is likely Colin Linden again. 

The Tide Will Rise (Music: Bruce Hornsby / Words: Bruce Hornsby and John Hornsby) 
Levon sings lead. This song found its way to Hornsby's January 1993 Harbor Lights album, and is a song to his ancestors, the watermen of Virginia. This is presumably an earlier version then. With words like 'they say we're a dying breed, they say we're gonna disappear' it reminds me of Cahoots, complete with tinkling orientalish synth and guitar sounds. They put out worse than this in the past (most of Islands and Cahoots for starters). Also it's hard to tell how different a clean final mix would be. 

Then next four songs run after each other, and all feature Garth on horns rather than keyboard. There are usually multiple horns. On the final versions on Jericho Bobby Strickland added sax, and Dave Douglas added trumpet. They (or others) may well be on these sessions too. 

Nobody Sings 'Em Like Ray 
Co-written by Jim Rooney. Jazzy tribute to Ray Charles with Garth Hudson performing powerfully on horns. Either there's overdubbing or assistance. Three voices share equal honours, Levon, Rick and probably Randy. It's also very catchy, and has great lyrics. It's incomprehensible that it wasn't used. 

Remedy 
The bass sounds more prominent than the final version. The piano is terrific. 

Keep The Home Fires Burning 
This opens with a jaunty sax lead. Vocals are shared. The harmony chorus has a C&W feel. 

Stuff You Gotta Watch 
Opens in Sgt Pepper style with a voice announcing 'the triumphant return of the Kenny Wayne Orchestra!' then goes into a very live sounding big band pastiche version of Stuff You Gotta Watch which is faster and better than the album cut. Phenomenal! 

When the Crossing The Great Divide bootleg appeared, it had the demo versions of Blind Willie McTell and Atlantic City, together with The Box Tops cover Soul Deep. These are dated 1991.

In March 1962, Streisand auditioned for RCA Records by recording nine songs, pressed on a 12-inch acetate record. Marty Gold, called “one of RCA's yeoman house arrangers,” accompanied Barbra on piano.
The demo includes Barbra's version of a song Shirley Temple sang in a film called Captain January. Written by S. Mitchell and L. Pollack, “At the Codfish Ball” has never been recorded by Barbra —although she did confess that in preparation for 2003's The Movie Album, she was considering recording a medley of Shirley Temple songs!

Review:
This CD is packed with great outtakes from 64-65. Unfortunately, the overall sound is a little muffled. It's quite enjoyable, however, and not nearly so bad as to deter acquisition. Although recorded at the correct speed, the muddy sound gives everything the feeling of being slow. A couple of these songs, Sitting On A Barbed Wire Fence and It Takes a Lot to Laugh, have since been released on the official Bootleg Series in incomparable quality, but there are count-offs and endings here that are faded out on the official release. On Suze, Bob can be heard saying "OK" right before the cut off. I'll Keep It With Mine is a different, slightly more up tempo version than the released one, with a superimposed 3/4 time feel. Eternal Circle is different, with a harp solo at the end. If You Gotta Go, Go Now begins with a drum and guitar intro. The package is quite nice, with a sharp looking full color cover, and a period black and white photo on the back. As the manufacturer is actually TMQ, the title and front cover came about simply because they already had it camera ready from an LP project of two years earlier. The biggest problem with this package is one that has always haunted TMQ. There is no historical information what-so-ever as to dates, sessions, etc.

A collection of rehearsals, outtakes and alternates from the sessions for The Beach Boys greatest album - Pet Sounds. Ex- to Ex SBD stereo/mono.

This three-CD set of “Pet Sounds” sessions and outtakes was released by Vigotone subsidiary label “Spank”. While substantial parts of it were rendered obsolete by the “Sea of Tunes” box sets “Unsurpassed Masters Vols. 13 and 14?, there still are some unique mixdown variations in this set. Even the stereo mixes differ from what the group later released in the official “Pet Sounds Sessions” box. - Philip Cohen

The story is that the Beach Boys were feuding over the liner notes that caused the delay of the release of the Pet Sounds Sessions Boxset. The delay allowed Spank, a Vigotone label, to rush out their version of the Pet Sounds Sessions complete with their own stereo version of the album and much more. Here’s how Vigotone introduced Leggo My Ego:

“Thirty years have passed since sessions commenced for what many consider to be the greatest rock album of all time - The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds. Now, for the first time, Spank Records has gathered together all the available outtakes/alternates/session tapes and backing tracks from these landmark sessions into one package. We have located improved quality tapes for much of the material that has circulated previously and, even better, we have discovered never before heard additional rarities.

“The songs have been organized so that disc one contains an almost complete alternate version* of the album followed by another alternate version of the album. On disc one we have eliminated most count-ins and studio talk where it was present in order to create a disc that you will enjoy listening to over and over. Where count-ins and studio talk have been eliminated (eight songs), the (same) track has been repeated in its uncut state on disc two or three. Also for disc one we have increased the pitch of “Caroline, No” to match the speed of the released version. It appears at the correct pitch on disc three. Discs two and three compile, in the same running order as the original LP, everything that is not included in its entirety on disc one.

“We hope you enjoy this package as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you. Be looking for an updated and improved version of our out-of-print Smile set coming in the near future. - Dr Vigotone

* no alternate version of the song “Pet Sounds” has yet surfaced.

As Dr Vigotone mentioned, CDs 2 and 3 followed the sequence of the Pet Sounds songs but with each song expanded into a “making of” the song. These are fly-on-the-wall moments as you listen to Brian Wilson take charge. This is the album that apparently stunned the Beatles, or at least Paul McCartney, into competition with the Beach Boys to see who could make the album of the ’60s.

If not for bootlegs, you might never get to hear what a session sounds like. Later, another bootleg label, Sea Of Tunes, would release entire boxsets of just the sessions for one or two Beach Boys songs. This took the whole idea of collecting or admiring the work of musicians to a new level.

A rare bootleg record containing a lossless version of the experimental studio creation variously known as Jazz Lips aka Blow Nose aka This Is Jazz. But don't get too excited: if this ditty didn't feature Michael Stipe's vocals, you'd be hard pressed to associate this in any way with R.E.M. 
The recording, taken from a battered flexi disc, took a mighty dose of cleaning up (speed adjustment, click removal). It's still a lo fi version, from a hi-gen source to begin with, but I guess it's better than nothing. File under: to be played infrequently.
