Another highlight of Hendrix and his band?s summer of 1970 was a concert at New York?s Randall?s Island as part of the New York Pop Festival. Jethro Tull, Steppenwolf, Grand Funk Railroad and John Sebastian also were on the bill at Downing Stadium, and the crowd?s numbers swelled to the point where the island became log-jammed ? in particular for Hendrix?s set, which was the event?s climax. After their performance, Hendrix and his band had to be evacuated from the site by helicopter.
