Genesis - 1973-02-24 - Manchester, UK (AUD/FLAC)

(Audience FLAC)

Genesis - FTH Manchester 240273 AUD Remaster GEN240273CHG

As promised, this a definitive remaster of the FLAC version of the torrent 'Genesis - FTH Manchester 240273 - Audience' from the original source cassette tape.

This fixes a number of problems that I just didn't bother with on the first transfer. These are described further below and in the lineage notes at the end of this file.

1. Watcher of the Skies 10:21
2. Musical Box 12:34
3. Get 'em out by Friday 12:53
4. Suppers Ready 25:05
5. Return of the Giant Hogweed 9:30
6. The Knife (encore). 9:31
-----
Total Time 79:54

This is a mono audience recording which I made on a Bush TP60 portable cassette recorder of the complete Genesis performance, as part of their Foxtrot Tour. Their supported band on that night was 'String Driven Thing'.

As far as I am aware there are no other complete recordings of this concert sourced from anywhere else - although I suspect there?s probably a soundboard/multi-track tape recording from that night, including the performance of ?Return of the Giant Hogweed? which was included on the ?Genesis Live? album from 1973, which can also be heard on 'GEN730225TM - Live in Leiceter'. Indeed, at the end of 'Get 'em out by Friday (32:45) Peter says "... also an opportunity to give us a certain amount of time because the gig is being recorded tonight <applause> they're changing over the reels at this very moment ..."

The recording was made from the stalls at around the 20th row from the front, slightly to the right hand side looking at the stage. It?s not a brilliant recording compared to todays standards, but as live audience recordings go, it surely serves as a definitive record of the Genesis part of the event.

There are one or two tape drop outs that remain after careful editing along with clipped audience wolf whistles, which after experimentation I found were best left alone. I avoided any form of noise reduction on this remaster as this really did upset the quiet passages on the first FLAC version. A simple 'catenary shaped EQ' was sufficient to improve the overall sound image with some reduction of the tape noise without upsetting the high end response.

The first FLAC version also suffered from timing/pitch problems in that it ran too slow. To correct this I used the timing of 'The Return of the Giant Hogweed' from the official 'Genesis Live' album (CD infact) from 1973 as a reference. By comparing the start and end times of the complete song I was able to establish that the recording needed speeding up by 3.7%. Consequently this has allowed me to fit the entire performance onto 1 CD-R, coupled with the removal of a few of seconds of the audience applause just prior to the final song 'The Knife'.

Towards the end of Supper's Ready, almost an hour into the show (56:27) the cassette tape was flipped during the recording, inevitably this resulted in a short gap of silence after the transfer. I have filled this gap with a 10 second sample from the performance of 'Supper's Ready' from the following nights performance in Leicester at the De Montfort Hall. This was lifted from the GEN730225TM vinyl remaster and its EQ adjusted slightly to 'sound' more less the same as my tape recording. You'll hear the difference I expect, but its better than silence.

The resulting FLAC file with its associated 'cue' file can be written as CD audio to a single CDR, using EAC, CDDA, Nero or a similar CD burning tool. The FLAC file may need to be converted to WAV format before burning, as the 'cue' file references the WAV filename. The FLAC file is in stereo with the mono track duplicated on both left and right channels.

The artwork has been created from material provided by the 'genesismuseum.com' with Adam's permission. The images have been created for the expected size of a standard jewel case, and have a small black border to allow for the correct trimming and cutting.

The lineage of this remaster for CD-R is as follows:

Source: Audience recording to a BASF C120 LH cassette tape.
Recorded on: Bush TP60 portable mono cassette recorder.
PLayback on: Sony WM-DD33 Walkman with azimuth correction, without Dolby or EQ.
Digitised on: ZOOM H2 digital recorder at 48 KHz, 24 bit lossless.
Audio restoration with: Steinberg Wavelab, time/pitch correction, minor tape drop out correction, with a little EQ (a 'catenary shape' ) for the high and low frequencies.
CD mastered with: Steinberg Wavelab & CDDA.
Recording, transfer, restoration, mastering and artwork by Chris Gregory, January 2011.
