Comments:
This originally appeared on the Who torrent site "Long Live Rock" in early 2008; I put it up shortly thereafter on Dime, and to my knowledge, it hasn't reappeared since. Since this is a fairly unique show (their first performance in seven years, in a tiny hockey arena in upstate New York), I thought it might be worth sharing again even though the quality is really more appropriate for serious fans. There has been assorted footage in circulation over the years, but to my knowledge this is the most complete set that has hit the trading pool.
This is a blend of two sources, both cited as 2nd generation VHS tapes. The audience source that comprises the bulk of this recording is shot from the back corner and is fairly steady, though grainy; on the plus side, the audio is actually pretty good although it sounds like it comes from the built-in camera mics. The pro shot footage is much easier on the eyes, though a little washed out; unfortunately, the soundboard audio has a bit of distortion. If you're a big Who fan, you will likely still be glad to have this in your collection.
Performance-wise, it's a solid show with a crazy setlist. They kicked off the tour with a collection of unusual songs which ballooned the set to 3 1/2 hours on some nights; there was an extended "Tommy" medley, several solo Entwistle and Townshend songs (the only "new" material any of the members had to promote was Townshend's "Iron Man" soundtrack from earlier in 1989), covers, and "deep tracks" all of which were dropped from the show within a week. This recording provides a glimpse into some of the tracks most of us never saw on that tour if we missed the Giants Stadium dates.
Comments from the original info file:
This was the 1st night of the 1989 Reunion Tour. Compiled from 2 VHS sources, this contains all the available Pro Shot footage, as well as the remaining songs taken from a very good audience shot video. The clip of Join Together is taken from a contemporary news source, and is featured for completeness. Some of the tracks are also not complete. The Pro Shot film has had the color slightly reduced to bring the footage more in line with the audience film. This is the most complete version of this show available. Despite this being the 1st full show in 7 years, it is a great performance.
