Ruis Rockfestival Beat Club & BBC 1971 & 1972 is a Mid Valley budget release featuring the three best sounding documents of the second incarnation of the Jeff Beck Group. This project featured Clive Chaman (bass), Max Middleton (keyboards), Cozy Powell (drums) and Bob Tench on vocals and stood in contrast to the first group. The fun and loose feeling provided by Rod Stewart and Ron Wood was replaced by a tight, professional and diverse group with very interesting material.
This group lasted just about a year and a half and produced only two albums, Rough And Ready and Jeff Beck Group before being disbanded.
Mid Valley present three excellent sounding professionally recorded documents dating from just before the release of Rough And Ready to the BBC appearance a few weeks before the end. All of these tapes have been released before including Going Down To The BBC (Refine Masters) released last year. While the Refine Masters is a great release, Mid Valley is more complete.
It is presented in a fatboy jewel case with EV’s super cheap, stupid and totally unhelpful garbage packaging. The front and back are generic TMoQ artwork with only an insert to describe the contents. I guess they want to bring back the days of vinyl when the LPs were stored in plain white sleeves with only an insert in the plastic, but even at the low price this is offered merits more effort.
The new Jeff Beck Group finished recording Rough And Readyin July, 1971. One of their first live appearances was on August 22nd in the Ruis Rockfestival in Turku, Finland. Five songs from an excellent soundboard recording have been available and were pressed many years ago on Flying High Helsinki 1971 (EVSD 51), one of Empress Valley’s finest efforts. Three songs, “I Got To Have A Song,” I’ve Been Used” and “Situation” are found as filler on Going Down To The BBC (Refine Masters).
WGPSEC describes the intensity of the set, and it starts off with the first song “New Ways / Train Train” which races by. What is apparent in this recording is the key role played by pianist Max Middleton. Throughout the short recording Beck and Middleton playing off one another, like in the “Jody” where they play a call and response game before the short drum solo and the segue into “Ice Cream Cakes.”

Add. Information:
The Yardbirds - a British rock band famous for guitarists who began their musical career in it: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page. It is enough to name the names of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page to make the ears of the music lover prick up. Their presence in The Yardbirds, a powerful, innovative team with an original and inventive sound, only triples the interest in these heroes of the British scene of the 60s. Real heroes. The Yardbirds is not just a once-famous band in whose catalog there are a dozen hits. You won’t surprise anyone with such good today. Yardbirds are pioneers of brand new guitar rock. Starting their career with cover versions of blues and rhythm and blues songs, the Yardbirds did not stop there chants from someone else's voice. As it turned out, it is much more interesting to experiment, expanding the emotional and technical capabilities of pop rock. Clapton, Beck and Page's innovative techniques, combining distortion and amplification of sound with an elegant presentation and breathtaking virtuosity, radically changed the attitude to guitar in rock circles. Yardbirds have also been among the pioneers of psychedelia. They were not afraid of eclecticism and rather free handling of the material, and as a result, many of their undertakings set the stage for the coming offensive of hard rock and progressive rock.

1) This new torrent comes with a newly found, hitherto uncirculated track, "Rock My Plimsoul", from the May 15, 1967 "Monday, Monday" BBC radio show. Thanks a kazillion, also on behalf of all Jeffonatix, to my swapmate Ashbo.
2) Also, the first track "I Ain't Superstitious" from the March 7, 1967 Saturday Club show underwent a highly necessary, MAJOR pitch correction by -7% (yes!);
3) all tracks were checked again and interference crackles were removed or (further) smoothened, the channel levels were individually auto-boosted wherever possible, plus minor edits applied for "cleaning", where necessary.
Track listing and all details indispensable to a Jeff collector's life, re-using most of fellow-Dimer Jeff J.'s previous elaborate info, and crossed-checked with Chris Hjort's listings in his "Jeff's Book":

From the Booklet liner notes :
"Neil Young is an incredibly diverse musician and individual. One look at his solo catalogue, and a more careful investigation into the many musical styles & motifs represented by that catalog will easily prove this point. He can play the tastiest blues licks, the grungiest power chords, the tightest little rock and roll arrangements and some of the best country twang ..... all wherever the mood strikes.Over the years, Neil has also gained the reputation of a rocker who likes to lend a hand to his fellow musician when the opportunity arises. Most folks in the industry, then, are quick to return the favour if Neil ever asks for their support or help on a song, a concert or a film project. Knowing his sense for fun & adventure, and his eye for quality, anyone who works with Neil can assume that the finished product will probably turn out extremley well ... or that at least they'll have a blast at making it happen.
So this CD show's off some examples of Neil's work; mostley with his friends. The first 2 tracks offer Neil with long time cronies "Crazy Horse"; captured live here in 1986 at Great Wood in Massachusettes in the U.S. Track 3 features Neil all on his own in an outtake from the original "Trans" LP, when it still carried the titleto the [unreleased] film "Human Highway". Tracks 8 & 9, incidentally, are Neil's jam's with Devo, taken directley from the soundtrack to that film. Neil shows off his country side on track 4 in concert with the International Harvesters in Nashville in 1985. Neil takes the stage with G.E.Smith & the late Michael Bloomfield's former band as they play tribute to Bloomfield during this performance at The Ritz in New York. The closing segment of the disk is, in my opinion, the most historic. In 1990, a musican who had played in a regional rock band in the sixties organised a benefit concert at Calvin High School, his alma mater, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He called upon all the famous, and not so famous musical alumni of the school to see if they could lend a hand to
this musical high school reunion. The call back to Calvin High Schoolcaught the ears of it's most famous students.
Neil Young (Former member of "The Squires"),
Burton Cummings (Of "The Devrons")
and Randy Bachman ("Chad Allen & The Expressions")
were among the dozens of Musicians who reunited with their old bands from the sixties and, inevitably, with one another.
The last four tracks are taken from this incredible event which took place at the local concert hall in Winnipeg and it includes jams on two Guess Who classics, a Randy Bachman solo number, a Neil classic & a Bob Dylan oldie.

This is from the Vigotone label. It's an excellent collection that makes you wish more attention was paid to the solo Beatle albums (I'm really waiting for a Ringo compilation of whatever there is from the 70s). Of course some sections are more interesting than the others, but that you'll have to find out for yourself. I may recommend to start with the alternate album and if you want more just serve yourself. This collection made me appreciate the Imagine album even more. I don't know why but it's nver been my favourite Lennon album now it's going up though.

Notes
These recordings collectively form the best of what Bob Dylan recorded before the release of his first album. None are original songs; as the name suggests, Woody Guthrie and the music of the 1930s and 1940s hang like a specter over much of the material here.
You can really get a sense of Dylan beginning his journey towards musical stardom. While his earliest recordings here sound reasonably tentative, by the later recordings he has developed a knack for showmanship and inhabiting the songs. He even cracks a lewd joke when introducing "Talking Merchant Marine."
As is unsurprising, the sound quality is questionable at times. While the Minnesota Hotel Tape and the Carnegie Chapter Hall recordings sound utterly remarkable, the Minnesota Party Tape and the Riverside Church Tape leave a bit to be desired. The Gleason Tape falls squarely in the middle - it has an ambience that makes up for its loud tape noise. None of the recording quality detracts significantly from the songs, and listenability was a concern, as ever, in compiling this set.
The bonus content includes a couple of songs that were on an earlier iteration of this record, and a handful of others that were interesting (especially Backwater Blues!) but that couldn't quite fit on the proper CD. "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" represents the only representation of music present on Dylan's debut LP, though the melody of "1913 Massacre" would be reappropriated for "Song To Woody."

Details:
The purpose of this 2-CD set is to compile all the Tangerine Dream music that was released outside the regular albums during the ‘70s and the ‘80s, from the best possible sources and with the best possible quality. All the tracks here are therefore taken from samplers, compilations, singles and promos that were released by the band during that period but are out of print since a long time, and are presented chronologically by date of release.
Versions from singles or compilations that are just extracts from the regular album versions were not considered. Alternate versions of album songs were included only when they were a different mix, an extended version or an edited version.
Each track was carefully remastered, with manual cleaning of vinyl crackles and with special attention to ensure a correct speed (some of these rarities available on bootlegs often run too fast).
Additional notes for some tracks:
Ultima Thule Part 1 is the original 1971 mix, not the 2000 remix available on some recent compilations.
Oszillator Planet Concert was recorded live on 21Jun71.
Overture is part of the unreleased "Oedipus Tyrannus" project, recorded Jun74.
Stratosfear and The Big Sleep In Search Of Hades from the Stratosfear single are edited versions.
The single version Monolight is a remixed version.
The extended version of Dr. Destructo has a portion of the original track duplicated to make it longer.
The 8 music tracks from the Risky Business audio movie kit are actually the following:
- Track 1 is an alternate mix of No Future
- Track 2 is an alternate mix of Lana
- Track 3 is an alternate version of Guido The Killer Pimp
- Tracks 4, 5 and 6 are short sound effects
- Track 7 is Edinburgh Castle
- Track 8 is an alternate mix of Love On A Real Train and corresponds to the closing credits
The Dream Is Always The Same and Love On A Real Train from the original soundtrack LP are alternate versions compared to the soundtrack CD versions.
The three versions of Warsaw In The Sun are different remixes.
The single version of Streethawk is a remix.
Horns Of Doom was made available in 1986 but is actually a 1980 recording.
The single version of Tyger is a slight remix, with more percussions during the chorus.
The extended version of Alexander Square is based on the album track Alexander Square Reprise, but with an extended central part.

EDITING NOTES:
This amazing stereo recording, taken from the soundboard master reel, showcases Taj Mahal in all his early 70's crossover blues glory. A lot of the material here is also available on the official Taj Mahal live recording from the same venue, recorded just a few months earlier, 1972's The Real Thing.
My efforts to improve the sound quality of this recording, which is already superb, were minimal and include light tweaking of the frequency spectrum to eliminate some flatness and unbalanced frequency levels. I tried to focus on not altering the overall dynamic of the recording, which would eliminate the original feel of the music, while taking out some of the more subtle flaws.
I included artwork that I put together from what I could find that would sort of fit with the recording since there seems to be nothing available to my knowledge! First I had to determine the titles of most tracks, which were somewhat mislabelled by the original seeder of the source recording, who I am forever grateful to for providing such a recording!! No worries!! I managed to find the proper titles for every song but the first one! The original tracklisting is kept the same as the source with one difference: I seperated track 1 into 2 tracks since it contained 2 songs, the unknown song and Gone Fishin'.
I am aware that this show could fit on one disc if some of the dead air is taken out but I decided not to do this, in efforts to keep the recording as original and complete as possible, even if it contains some near silent periods. This is what happened at the show so it's included!
If anyone knows the title of the first song with 100% confidence, let me know so I can fix the artwork!!

NOTES:
This is a very, very historic "period piece" type video.
It was filmed at Wayne State University TV Studio, in Detroit and the host's name is Dave.
The setting is a small tv studio (probably a public television studio) with Ted and the host sitting on the floor of small stage. Ted has several guitars laying around - all of them are Gibson Birdlands. It's very layed back, and I doubt that there was any script for this as Ted just chats about whatever and occasionally does some jamming on one of his guitars. Ted literally starts off the video laying on his back and playing guitar for several minutes. The host seems to know a little bit about rock and roll, but he's hardly an expert.
The host puffs away on cigarettes most of the show. A sign of the times - Ted said the word "shit" and the host told him he had to watch his language because they were on tv. Although he looks quite normal by modern standards, at the time, much of society looked upon Ted as a long-haired freak.
There's some banter with the people in the control room who are really getting a good laugh from the discussion going on between Ted and the host.
Ted makes some "local" Detroit references to many things, such as Michigan Outdoors host Mort Neff (an outdoors/hunting show in Michigan), the Purple Pickle restaurant on Southfield Rd. and Nine Mile, and many local musicians.
Although he shows signs of it, Ted hasn't yet become the cocky mofo that he is today.
There are logical chapter points throughout the video, some of them are for the various guitar jams, and others are placed at the beginning of certain conversations.
The video cuts before reaching the end - I was told the full video doesn't exist. I don't know how long the original video was, but this portion is 46 minutes long.
It was filmed in black & white and considering the age and rarity of the video - it is in decent condition.
Generally speaking the video is clear and glitch free, however, there are about a dozen or so tape rolls in it.

comments:
Mostly instrumentals - this tape sounds like it was Cozy Powell's work/practice tape for the sessions he was involved in for Cinderella's 'Long Cold Winter' album. There's some vocals present and the mixing is quite different than the final product. Some songs are incomplete on this tape as well. Sound quality is decent for a Maxell type II cassette tape in which this material is purportedly sourced from.
