After a short break after the tour of the Netherlands and then a one off concert supporting Nick Lowe in Chippenham, Elvis and the band have the briefest of respites before heading to Australia and New Zealand to help them prepare for a mammoth tour of the U.S. and the U.K. starting in July through until November. To add to this gruelling schedule, Elvis now finds it incumbent to play much longer sets than at any time in his career so most of the shows are checking in at over 2 hours compared to the 45 minutes sets often tossed out to an unsuspecting audience. This series starts off favourably with a rather tasty FM broadcast from Sydney station 2JJ. This has been available for a considerable time as the beautifully presented "Secondary Modern" bootleg CD but my recording has two additional tracks, "King Horse" and "Big Sister's Clothes". I have no recollection of where this recording came from or how there are 2 extra tracks but I've had identical files sent to me from two collectors in the U.S. and Europe and both concur with my recording so I'm confident it's genuine. Despite the review on the Elvis Costello wiki, http://www.elviscostello.info/wiki/index.php/Bootleg:_Secondary_Modern
I feel the sound quality is pretty good. My recording has less electronic/digital interference /noise than my boot CD which suggests it the boot is a high generation copy but there's precious little to disrupt your listening pleasure from my source.
To the concert then, Elvis introduces "Pidgin English" with the line that they've got a new album out in about a month's time - God Willing ! The audience seem pretty relaxed about whether there is new or old material until "Almost Blue" when there's a little less enthusiasm at the end . The playing on this song is exquisite and shows just how competent all The Attractions were as musicians - definitely not the punk -thrash three chord heroes of punk-new wave. The tracks not broadcast by the station are a strange mix of older singles and well loved album tracks and not playing the last two songs seems especially strange - maybe one day the whole concert will become available. Further to this, the previous show is listed as exisitng as an audience recording but I have never seen it in circulation and the old stalwarts of collecting from the 70s and 80s on this side of the Atlantic and in the U.S. never had a recording either so if anyone, anywhere does have one- you know who to call !!
