Metallica - 1983 - Ride The Lightning Demo (STU/FLAC)

(Studio FLAC)

Metallica
Ride The Lightning Demo
JAPAN Bootleg Vinyl (2010)

This is a rip of a BOOTLEG record, not an official release. It is a 2010 pressing that clearly pre-dates the 2016 Deluxe Ride The Lightning box set.

There is much discussion about the authenticity about these tracks, but I will just offer a few of my own personal comments. Nearly everyone is familiar with the four original Lightning demos: Fight Fire With Fire, Ride The Lightning, Creeping Death, and When Hell Freezes Over; those have circulated on numerous bootlegs including my personal favorite, 'Horsemen of the Apokalypse'. Then somewhere around 2006(?) the unheard demo for Trapped Under Ice surfaced on a boot called 'Sucking My Love'. That demo has since been confirmed to be legit by Metallica authorities. The real gems of this particular vinyl are the other two tracks, Fade To Black and For Whom The Bell Tolls. Are they real? I had heard they are rips from backing tracks of the Guitar Hero game. But I compared these diligently and they are totally different from those. If these are fakes they are extremely well done. Just listen to the extended exit on Bellz, and don't miss that signature guitar play in the last 2 seconds that sounds a lot like the '82 demos.

On the 1992 doc 'A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica', James mentions that he still had RTL riffs recorded on his 4Track from 1984. And with the issue of all these deluxe album box sets, we know that they had a great deal of demos and rehearsal tapes lying around. One more note of interest, just look up this vinyl album on Discogs: https://www.discogs.com/Metallica-Ri...elease/2920859. Check out what the site says: "This release has been blocked from sale in the marketplace. It is not permitted to sell this item on Discogs." My guess is that Metallica blocked the sale of it because its contents are real.
