Pony Express Records released four different versions of a bootleg called "Before The Fame" in the late 1990's. The first edition is the rarest (I'm still hunting down a copy) and this version, the fourth, is the most common. Each addition evolved with more songs, with the original release (1 CD) duplicating songs on other bootlegs, the second release (1 CD) having the same songs except three of them which are replaced by different tracks, the third release (1 CD) is the exact same release as version two but with different packaging and artwork, and the fourth and final version (2 CD) featured the most tracks with seven more than the previous release evolving to a two CD set.

The tracks themselves are unreleased studio outtakes from 1972 and 1973, referred to as 'Laurel Canyon Music Publishing Demos'. Some recordings were distributed on tape, others on acetates, to mostly England. They were recorded at various locations noted below. Most of these songs were first released into mainstream circulation on this bootleg, in excellent quality because most ofthe tracks were transferred from the original master tapes or at least very low generation copies of them. This early material of Bruce's is a fanscinating glimpse into his early writing with songs that play out in front of you like a story - so visual. The songs recorded at Jim Cretecos' apartment and Mediasound Studios were recorded and produced by Cretecos, with Mike Appel also producing (Cretecos was a producer and engineer that recorded most of Bruce's early material). The others recorded at 914 Sound Studios were recorded and engineered by Pete Weiss during the 1972 sessios and by Louis Lahav in the 1973 sessions (I honestly like his mixes the most out of all of the engineers Bruce has gone through).

As the inner insert of the bootleg says, "This rare release invites you to listen to Bruce Springsteen "before the fame, but not before the genius."
