24 - I Can’t Stand It (Finale)

This is the famous James Brown concert that was broadcast live on WGBH TV in Boston less than 24 hours after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As violence was breaking out across America, Boston mayor Kevin White was considering canceling all public events, including the James Brown concert. Civil leaders advised White that cancelling the concert might trigger a riot. The mayor relented and then persuaded PBS station WGBH to broadcast the event in an effort to keep black people at home instead of on the street. James Brown soothed the grieving audience by dedicating the show to the memory of Dr. King and delivered an electrifying performance. Brown introduced the mayor who urged the audience to keep cool. At one point, the fans go wild and rush the stage. The police move in to restore order but Brown assures them that he can handle it. James then pleads with the crowd to return to their seats and says this is not how black people should act. A very powerful and emotional performance!

This particular version is one that I personally "restored". I have taken the various parts of this show that were available and restored them to the original running order of the original concert. (Most versions feature the original reels in a random order with some segments even repeated.) I used two different versions of this show and used the best of both elements. One version had an additional 35 seconds of footage at the end that the other didn't, so I was sure to include that. I have chosen to omit the bit with the comedian. Sorry to those who were really looking forward to that segment.

Original VOB's were ripped to hard drive, edited and authored with Nero with searchable menu.

Notes:
In 2000 I was working for CountryCool.com (“the world of country music”) one of the million .com boom sites that soon went bust.We did the first video simulcast of the Country Music Awards (probably one of the first video simulcasts ever), an adventurous night. Fun place to work, got to chat with Keith Urban and Brad Paisley long before they were famous.

On May 5, 2000 Nashville hosted the Witness History III concert honoring Duane Eddy, and including Peter Frampton and John Fogerty (among others). While this is more of a ‘rock’ lineup, they fit with the Nashville crowd Someone later asked us to stream the concert (or parts of it). So they sent us a ¾” U-matic stereo master tape of the edited show. Now we were IT tech geeks up here in Northern Virginia (I was the webmaster, I ran the web servers), but fortunately for us I spent several years as a recording engineer at a 24 track studio, so I knew what to do. We had to rent a U-matic player (why would we have one), and I had to bring in my home computer with a decent video capture card (computers did not often have video capture cards back then). I captured it for streaming (probably at something like 320x240 with 8 bit audio, which was about the most Internet connections could handle back then). But I also brought my DAT recorder (I was a recording engineer remember) and made a DAT of the audio straight from the U-matic stereo master, which I later imported to the PC which you can download now. The recording quality is an absolutely excellent stereo recording with none of that videotape hum. Definitely releasable quality. And these are some good little sets here too.

Notes by TA:
"A buddy called me at the last minute to go see this show. (I think he actually invited my recording equipment, not me, even though he knows I like listening to Lou.)(Only kidding if you read this Bob.) Crobar is a disco / dance hall on the West side of Mid-Town Manhattan. Once you get past the frilly designer entranceway and the few side bars and cozy areas you wind up in a room the size of half a high school gymnasium. Problem with the place for a show like this is that they sell the whole building to capacity, which includes all the people that are allotted for many small side areas, so that when Lou hit the stage, everybody converges into the one main room, which turned the place into a real sardine can of about 1500 people. Surprisingly, the crowd was really into Lou, relatively quiet and into the music, very unusual for the NYC set, most of whom appear just to be seen at the gig (or just to say they were there), rather than to appreciate it. Me, I know why I was there ... I had work to do, and so I did. But you can hear how cooperative the crowd was during the piano / voice duet Vanishing Point. This NYC crowd resisted the typical mid-song cat calls that normally fill the voids of silence. The place was so quiet, you will hear the bottles and bottle caps falling at the bar behind me. One more thing, my special thanks to the tall geek standing behind my buddy breathing down his neck like an air conditioning vent. Once you forced my buddy to leave, you tried to push your way in front of me. Hope your ribs are healing.

I have not had the time to put together a set list for this show. Though Lou announced the names for many songs, most songs were new to me. Anybody who thinks they can put together a set list, your help is most appreciated.

This is an original recording by me that has never been released before. Hope you all enjoy this recording as much as I do. As always your comments and star ratings are appreciated.

Please do not distribute this recording in lossy formats such as MP3. Though it's perfectly alright with me if you convert it to those kinds of formats for your own personal listening on your i-pods, etc., I would prefer that if you share it with a friend, kindly do so in .wav, .shn or .flac formats."

Note by coyote:
"I got a look at the handwritten planned setlist during the show, and had another song followed Perfect Day, it was to have been Sweet Jane."

Notes by the taper
This performance was stellar from start to finish albeit abbreviated due to casino agreement. I was going to rant about it but why bother, perhaps someone can give me a logical reason for the 90 minute rule (getting patrons to the gaming floor is not a good answer). Anyway, the band was in fine form and animated throughout the whole set. Steve seemed to be enjoying himself immensely and the rest of the band were loose and in the zone. I really wanted to hear GFTO, on my top ten list of albums that I would want if stranded on a desert island. Thanks to the other Dimers for their great efforts in documenting this tour so at least I have the other full length shows to listen to. Perhaps we'll get a Tormato/Tales tour next year!

As for the recording, excellent position with minimal crowd distraction. Go ahead and crank it up, nice stereo separation and channel definition.
