Notes:
Here we have a totally unheard, uncirculated soundboard recording, capturing the Van Halen concert in Louisville during their Diver Down tour (Hide Your Sheep tour) in 1982. This is the earliest date documented to feature the standard 1982 setlist arrangement, which was significantly reorganized sometime between July 27th and 30th, while the earliest dates of the tour were notably structured differently. Additionally, like all shows from this date until the middle of September, the setlist includes D.O.A., a song which is not known to have been played since the first night of 1979 tour.

Unfortunately, this recording is relatively short and incomplete, due to having been recorded on a single 60 minute tape, and for some reason Roy started recording about 18 minutes late into the show. However, an old circulating audience recording DOES exist, which is complete.

This soundboard recording starts significantly late, right after Runnin' With The Devil would've concluded, when Dave does his first lengthy interlude to interact with the audience. The first side of the 60 minute master tape runs out right after the first part of Everybody Wants Some, just as Dave is about to do his short "we take it for granted that everybody wants some, but the question to ask ourselves is how much are you willing to give" interlude. While no songs are missing in between, we're still missing the ending of Everybody Wants Some, with the second side of the tape starting again just in time for Dance The Night Away. The second side of the 60 minute master tape sadly ends only about a minute into D.O.A., so is missing Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, Bottoms Up, You Really Got Me, and Happy Trails.

Huge thanks to those who significantly helped with the absurd pricetag that was required to liberate this VH collection, most of which would've been impossible to save otherwise.

Original Notes:
Back in 1988 the Pawn Hearts Society put together two sets of tapes "Fragments Out Of Time" and "In Still Life". Between them there are live recordings of over 130 songs, at least one version of almost every song that Hammill or Van der Graaf Generator ever played live between 1970 and 1986. In total, there were twelve tapes, roughly 18 hours of music. Only one song was duplicated on the eight Fragments tapes; In Still Life had alternate versions together with a few songs that were missed off Fragments due to lack of space.
(A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers was deliberatly left off the tapes as the only version that exists is the well known TV performance.)

The performances are arranged chronologically, as much as possible by grouping of period of performance. Songs that were rarely performed tend to show up in the period in which they first appeared on vinyl. As you would expect the sound quality varies, I would grade most of the tracks as B/B+ with some slightly better, and some - mainly the early Hammill solo performances - generally not quite as good: their main deficiency being some slight tape hiss.

I received a cd-r copy of these tapes (#95/100) a few years ago. I have removed tracks that have been officially released on The Box and Margin+ and slightly re-ordered the running order to maintain the period chronology once the tracks were on 80 minute discs instead of 90 minute tapes. Where space permitted I've
added additional tracks from the appropriate period. Some of these are alternative versions but others are ones that were simply not included on the original tapes: these were identified in a review in the Pilgrims fanzine having read the article I went out of my way to trade for copies of the shows where the missing songs were performed. I have not replaced any tracks with newer versions of the same show (e.g., the Basel 72 tracks are the ones I originally received rather than the calayx1 remaster).

There were some speed problems on the discs when I received them, which I attempted to correct through a combination of listening and comparing the running times listed on the tape artwork, although the latter couldn't always be relied upon. The first 12 volumes were torrented on STG in late 2003/early 2004 by someone who received an audio copy of the discs from me. This flushed out a few more speed problems which I have - hopefully -fixed.  For this version I have made a few more corrections, using other versions of songs as a comparison.

In all there will be sixteen discs to this set - the first ten cover the Fragments tapes and the remaining six In Still Life; these come from the original shn files I circulated which I have now converted. The tape artwork includes comments as well as the original track listing. (included in a separate rar file)

Thanks go to all the tapers over the years, the pawn hearts society, the original  seeder and anyone else involved in producing or upgrading this set.

The Rolling Stones - Black Box (STU/FLAC)

THE ROLLING STONES
BLACK BOX (Remastered Edition)
Remasters Workshop RMW 624/5/6/7

Restored from the Yellow Dog set originally issued 1994, plus the bonus disc from 2000.

This set was obtained on Usenet in the spring of 2002. I did work to correct the pitch and phase then (before RMW existed), and reposted it on June 17th. It's not too likely you've got those kicking around in your collection, but if you do, you can retire them now! Back then, it was not feasible to correct the phase of stereo recordings, so those remained out-of-phase. They are all fixed on this edition, which was redone from scratch from archived .ape files.

With modern technology, I was able to fix the spot in the middle of "Gimme Shelter" (Disc 3, track 3) where it suddenly sped up by a semitone. The fluctuations have been ironed out as flat as possible, so that you may not even notice that it was ever in need of fixing.

Three tracks are added to fill out the short running time on discs 3 and 4. One is not an outtake - it is an OOPS mix of "Honky Tonk Women" that features mainly Keef playing his immortal guitar part, Mick Taylor's complementary leads, Ian Stewart's piano, and the horn section. I discovered it after correcting the phase, and thought, "this is so cool, somebody must want to hear it!" If you ever wanted to learn exactly what Keith is playing, here's your chance! If you do not want this track, it can be discarded and there will be no sector boundary errors (but you'll have to remove the title from the artwork...).

This show was broadcast live on WLIR-FM's as part of its regular weekly Thursday evening show from My Father's Place. If you listen to the beginning, The DJ's make a few comments as to the fact that they have left the warmth & security of the Ultrasonic Recording Studios. This show does have a few problems. There is a hum running for a while and they have problems with the overall balance. At one point they stop to do a quick mike check. This is all that was on the tape. It does appear that Bruce comes on to do encores, but the tape just ends abruptly.

Notes:
This is the famed Tull-A-Vision footage from Tampa Stadium. On their 76 US tour JT began using giant screens so the folks at the back could see the band. Commonplace now but relatively new back then. This is a recording of what was shown on the screen. It's known as 'part one' but there is no part two. It was purchased by a group of Tull fans after languishing for many years in someone's basement/attic/garage and lovingly transferred to DVD. There are a few glitches/cuts and it isn't the full show. Due to it's nature there are not many long-shots.

Journey - Escape Tour, Tokyo (Snivlle Remastered, Dual Layer Edition)
DATE: July 31, 1981
VENUE: Koseinenken Hall, Shinjyuku-Tokyo, Japan

VIDEO QUALITY: (8.85/10) Nice digital remastering. Vibrant colors and clean, clear picture quality throughout. Sits well in the "A-" class, but not quite clean enough to make it to a strong "A" grade. Overall, this release is a nice improvement over the source disc with much richer color and contrast and much less analog video noise.

AUDIO QUALITY: (9/10) Rich, clean stereo sound without too much analog noise or hiss. Encoded in Dolby 2.0 Tru-stereo @ 448 kbps.

VIDEO BITRATE: 8000 KB/s Upper Field First (Encoded with CCE SP2)
AUDIO BITRATE: 448 kbps (Dolby 2.0 Tru-Stereo)

MENU: Yes (motion menus w/ audio)
CHAPTERS: Yes, by song

LINEAGE: 1st Gen VHS -> DVD-R (OnFire Version) -> DVD Decryptor -> Elementary Streams -> Professional NLE and Video Editing/Remastering software -> Frame-served to CCE SP2 -> DVD Chaptered/Authored

SNIVLLE'S PRODUCTION NOTES:

This project was a massive undertaking, but well worth every bit of the effort. There have been 2 or 3 versions of this concert in circulation, but until recently, the "OnFire" release was considered to be the most desirable. This remastered version was sourced from the "OnFire" version.

This release is actually the 3rd revision of the project. It was important to me that this "Snivlle Remastered Edition" remained out of circulation, until it was the best that I could do. It is an unfortunate fact of "video-geek" life that there are only 240 lines of resolution inherent in VHS recordings. This number can obviously not compare to the more the 540 lines of resolution seen in commercial DVDs. The motivation behind all "Snivlle Remastered Edition" DVDs is not to compete with commercial DVD quality; rather, it is to get older VHS footage as close as possible to the quality of S-VHS or Laser Disc.

The mpeg-2 and AC3 elementary streams were extracted from the source disc. The streams were then imported into Pro-grade NLE (Non Linear Editing) Video/DVD production software. Various video noise samples were captured and analyzed from the original footage. Careful video temporal de-noising was applied to remove a substantial amount of analog VHS noise and mpeg-2 artifacts. This portion of the video processing was carefully calculated to ensure that maximum results would be achieved WITHOUT disturbing the integrity of the original picture. I use the "NeatVideo" noise reduction plug-in in Highest quality/High resolution mode.

[Color & Contrast Correction]
The lack of color vibrancy and contrast depth is one of the most noticeable unwanted effects readily seen in the previously circulated versions of this show. This is no longer the case. Using one of the industry's most formidable color correction NLE plug-ins, I was able to increase the color depth by more than 50 percent! White balance correction and black level correction were also applied. This color and contrast correction was performed without the use of built-in NLE color correction tools. In most NLE's, the built-in color/contrast tools utilize less accurate math-rounding calculations. The color/contrast correction plug-in used for this project is a true 32-bit floating point color corrector, not just "floating point capable".

The color and contrast quality is now vibrant, rich and consistent throughout the 97 minutes of footage. Stage lights, skin tones, chrome reflection, etc., are now much more appealing and natural looking.

Snivlle Remastered Editions are never mpeg-2 transcoded! All of my DVD projects are frame-served and encoded with Cinema Craft Encoder SP. The Cinema Craft Encoder is recognized within the DVD Production industry as the leader in high quality mpeg encoding. In order to maintain compatibility with a broad range of SA DVD players, bitrates are kept at 8000 KB/s or lower. I use standard GOP settings (N=3/M=5), higher than average quantization settings, and tweaked picture quality parameters within the encoder itself.

[Audio Remastering]
Many of the audio editing software tools that I use are older versions that I've owned since years. They have proven themselves to be fast, accurate, extensive, and reliable. I use CoolEdit Pro 2, WaveLab 3.04c, SoundForge 4.5d and a collection of very high end DirectX/VST plug-ins.

The AC3 files were level-normalized and converted to 32 bit PCM files with BeSweet. All audio editing and remastering was performed using 32 bit samples as opposed to standard 16 bit files. Audio noise samples were captured and hiss reduction applied using Waves Z-noise plug-in. Audio fidelity and frequency range was improved with Aureal enhancement to increase harmonic structure without resorting to traditional analog EQ methods. Sub sonic frequencies below 26 hz. were removed and that frequency energy was applied to the more necessary 40 - 220 hz. range. The resulting audio is now much better balanced with increased fidelity and a tight, full bottom end. The 32 bit PCM files were then encoded with the SurCode Dolby encoder as Dolby 2.0 Tru-Stereo: 448 KB/s, 48, 000 Khz., 16 bit.

Nina Hagen - 1982-07-31 - Detroit, MI (SBD/FLAC)

Sbd(low low low gen) > trade Flac > Audaicty > Flac6 16/44.1

I finally got a complete version of this excellent show and soundboard recording after not having it for so many years. You get to hear about the bands little run in with the Canadian Mounted Police and some hash, they played in Toronto the previous night.

I believe this to be a very low gen source as it sound very close to my 2nd gen cassette(mine had no encore). Could be from the master tape too, I don't know. I went through this and lowered the high levels from the floor tom drum mic and it is still a tad bit high, I did what I could to get those parts lowered to even out the mix as best as you can from a cassette recording. Otherwise this was a excellent recording except for the mix problems. I thinking this might be from the DJ at Clutch Cargo's, Diane, she would play the best music before and after shows and she would take requests, she played the 12" version of Eisbaer by Grauzone for me at the Bauhaus show in Dec.1982, I think it was that show. I had to leave early because my friend drank too much, man I was pissed, but I was 15 and lucky just to get in with my cheesy fake ID I got from the an ad in the back of Rolling Stone.

Great show and recording and now it has the encore! If you like Nina at all, you have to get this one. Check samples This version(with the encore)was seeded by Kanzan way back in 2005 on Dime awhile back, sent me a copy last year. Please try to keep this in flac format if you are going to add this to a blog or at the very least offer flac and mp3, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, if anyone else has any 1982 tour recordings, please seed them or contact me if you need anything transferred or a nice azimuth adjusted transfer, it does make a difference. I now have a Sony home stereo Mini Disc player/recorder transferring capabilities, Reel To Reel, cassette and, of course, cdr. And for those with other bands that I may like or even if I don't, please contact me even just to let me know that there is a recording out there, but you don't have it or don't want to seed it, I would just like to know what to look for. I hate to think of recordings sitting in a box in a closet or basement rotting away never to be heard again. Even if you don't think the quality is that great,it would still be nice to let others hear it as they might think the quality sufficient for their listening pleasures.  I know of some Berlin shows coming up from the 1982 tour and I seen(several years ago a traders(Duranie?)list a recording of the San Francisco show in 1982.

notes
this was originally broadcast as part of wxrt's unconcert series. the taper is thrilled to share this copy and said its the one used to record the broadcast. there is a touch of hiss, just enough to believe this is not a master. it is thus being labeled as unverified generation. the tape was in excellent condition, to the point of looking brand new. the broadcast itself has a good mix with nice bottom end to it. overall a great capture from a great venue. 9/10

originally built as a swedish community center in 1927, this building has gone through many names. besides being stages, it was also known as the old lakeview theatre, and the northside auditorium building. during the summer of 1982, the current owners opened up smart bar on the fourth floor of the building. in august of 1982, they had a chance to book the main room. over the next few months, they began to take control and eventually reopened the club as the caberet metro, now simply called the metro. smart bar was moved downstairs. it s a venue that is steeped in music history. smart bar pretty much spawned industrial and the metro helped give birth to several alternative bands such as the lemonheads and smashing pumpkins. its an important place to the chicago scene and its one of those places that generally every band plays at some point in their career. this nite was no exception.

Total time : 77.41
Type : radiobroadcast and audience recordings
(bootlegs and trading versions, see below)

Notas : famous gig at Crystal Palace, played two days after the Liévin gig used for official releases ("SOFAD Live", "singles, "Devotional" soundtrack).

Only 14 of the 19 songs were broadcasted, and it is possible that two broadcasts exist.

I used 4 sources to provide the most complete version of the radiobroadcasted show.

The core of the torrent is the bootleg CD "Enjoy The Rumours" (KTS 206).
This CD has an excellent sound quality, but it has a few flaws :

- the name of the venue (Crystal Palace) is edited during the end of "Halo",
- "Walking In My Shoes" is missing in full,
- there is a 5 seconds edit at the end of "Personal Jesus".

I was able to clean those three flaws, using the next sources :
- I used 5 seconds from the bootleg CD "Europe 1993" (Post Script PSCD 1281) To add the missing sentence at the end of "Halo",
- I used the bootleg CD "I Feel You" (Mogul Nightmare Records MNR 015) to add "Walking In My Shoes" after "Policy Of Truth". This pressing with 14 songs is the only bootleg CD source for the song "Walking In My Shoes".

- as the edit on "Personal Jesus" was unfortunately present in every bootleg CD variant ("Dogma" BKCD 050, "Devotional Jump" MFK 003, "Europe 1993" PSCD 1281, "I Feel You" GRA-010-A, "Enjoy The Rumours" KTS 206 - "I Feel You" MNR 015 don't even have the end of "Personal Jesus"), i used 5 seconds from the audience version recorded by F.N. You will hear a small difference between the radio and the audience sources, but at least the track is now complete.

My notes:
BBC 6 Music broadcast "Everything Counts" from Crystal Palace during their "Ultimate Depeche Mode Playlist" and the quality is very good, even though it was broadcast at 48kbps AAC (albeit with a very high efficiency and advanced encoding scheme), it sounds almost CD-quality and sounds slightly better than all FM bootleg versions in my opinion, including this one. Hopefully BBC 6 Music will broadcast some or all of this concert some day.
