David, if you don't know, is the authority when it comes to all things Free and wrote the sessionography for the box set and also the definitive book on Free 'Heavy Load'.

Neil Young was on a creative high in 1975. By the end of the summer, Zuma was finished, though still not released. Yet Neil carried on recording his new songs. Sometimes he recorded solo and sometimes with Crazy Horse. Lots of these songs would remain unheard by the public until quite a while later, but by late ’75, Neil had already written and recorded versions of such future classics as Like A Hurricane, Powderfinger, Sedan Delivery, Pocahontas and Ride By Llama.

He carried on recording in 1976. More great songs were put down on tape, such as Will To Love, Stringman and Campaigner. Some of us may feel that the Long May You Run album with Stephen Stills robbed us of the natural successor to Zuma, but Stills always suspected that Neil was holding back his best stuff for his solo album. That solo album was a work in progress throughout this period. Titles were reported in the press: Ride My Llama, In My Neighborhood, American Stars ‘N Bars, Chrome Dreams.

When American Stars ‘N Bars was released in 1977, Neil had scrapped most of the material he’d been recording since late ’75, replacing much of it with a series of rough hewn cowboy songs.
Fun stuff to be sure, but had Neil committed the latest in a series of difficult to explain career suicides? Who else, except maybe Bob Dylan, would sit on a stash of such quality songs and not let the public hear them?

Tracks 1 to 12 of this compilation are thought to be the unreleased Chrome Dreams album, readied for release weeks before Neil recorded those country hoedowns and rethought his strategy.
Some of these song titles will be more than familiar to you, but the actual performances may surprise you.

Powderfinger is performed as an unadorned solo acoustic song; Sedan Delivery, a second song destined for Rust Never sleeps, is presented in its pre-punked up arrangement and, in many people’s opinion, sounds all the better for that. You’ll also find the definitive Stringman, a song not given an official airing until Neil’s Unplugged set, heard here in a 1976 live performance enhanced by subtle yet beautiful studio vocal and guitar overdubs; Hold Back The Tears is another solo performance, longer and more ghostly that its later remake for American Stars ‘N Bars; Pocahontas is the same performance as the one that made Rust Never Sleeps, but in its original "Naked Mix;" Too Far Gone wouldn’t be officially released until the Freedom album in 1989, yet here’s a version from 14 years earlier with Poncho Sampedro adding a tasty mandolin part.

The other six songs from the album were released unchanged on the albums American Stars ‘N Bars, Comes A Time and Hawks And Doves, yet you may still be able to pick out slight differences in the mixes.
Homegrown, for one, would seem to have a little more fire in the guitars. Have a listen and see what you think.

We’ve chosen a select batch of bonus cuts to give you a further taste of just how creative Neil was during this fertile period. If the version of White Line (here retitled River Of Pride, maybe because Neil forgot to sing the actual White Line lyric) didn’t make the Chrome Dreams shortlist, then its continued circulation among collectors is something of a mystery. Maybe it was pressed onto acetate as a possible contender for Decade, which Neil was also preparing at this time. Whatever the truth, it’s a stupendous version of the song, recorded in 1975 with a loose and joyful Crazy Horse. Neil’s remake for Ragged Glory in 1990 may have been fine but it doesn’t quite capture the spirit of this earlier version. Campaigner did make Decade, but not before losing one of its verses. You can hear the full-length version here.

Three live cuts follow. No One Seems To Know is an aching piano ballad that Neil once described as Part 2 of A Man Needs A Maid, it’s first class but remains unreleased; Give Me Strength dates from an earlier ill-fated album called Homegrown (an album that would have also featured Star Of Bethlehem, the oldest cut in this collection) and is another lost classic; Peace Of Mind is heard as an electric rock song played with the Horse and very different from the version Neil released on Comes A Time.

And, as a nod to Zuma, we close with Crosby Stills Nash & Young. Human Highway was recording during the Stills-Young sessions in 1976. The song was always meant to be a CSNY track, but Neil had run out of patience by the Comes A Time LP. Now you can have a glimpse of what might have been, which, come to think of it, is also true of the whole collection.

Notes:
Due to the brevity of the Nashville '78 session the producers have added a live soundboard recording featuring Lou Ann Barton and three tracks featuring Johnni Reno on saxophone."
The one and only surviving test pressing was recently discovered in a cupboard in South Austin, Texas where it had lain for the last 19 years, all other recordings of the project have been destroyed after alleged contractual disputes arose. These recording, notable for their raw energy and rare slide guitar work are essential for all true collectors. Also featuring four early arrangements of songs that later appeared on the Texas Flood album.

The above paragraph is the supposed story behind this recording as told on the cd inlay. The real story is that the band didn't like the way the album turned out and paid a large sum of money to keep it from being released. As you would expect, someone got their hands on a copy and bootlegged it.

This compilation includes most of the unreleased White Album mixes that remain in collectors circles only. Nothing is taken from an official Apple release. You will notice that the unreleased songs "Not Guilty" and "What's The New Mary Jane" appear here as they would have been released in 1968, in their authentic original form, and not the bogus frankenstien versions released on "Anthology 3". These tracks are often found in less than stellar quality, but they appear here in official release quality. Indeed, the sound quality is excellent throughout the entire set.

All Tracks on this compilation have been re-equalized. Phase, levels, glitches & dropouts were corrected only in cases when it hasn't been done already by somebody else. Any present noise reduction was applied by the original bootleggers from way back when.

Thrash at its finest. Setlist is a nice sampling of their impressive catalog, going all the way back to the early 80's for Mechanix.

The mix for the 1997 show sounds a little off.
Marty's guitar and sometimes Dave's voice are low in the mix, not much I could do about that. I did my best to remove the dj talking, they talked right up to (and sometimes over) the start/end of songs.

The Westwood One #10-21 discs had several officially released tracks which I have removed:
Countdown To Extinction, Ashes In Your Mouth (12/4/1992) and Tornado Of Souls (2/25/1995)
Part of 2/25/1995 is released on "Live Trax" live EP, and all of 12/4/1992 is on the deluxe reissue of Countdown to Extinction 20th anniversary bonus disc Live at Cow Palace. All tracks here are not officially released.

Notes:
From a "millionth generation" cassette bought in Argentina some 17 years ago by our friend Alejandro. For some reason this recording has not been heavily circulated, and is shrouded in mystery. We have no legitimate doubts as to the authenticity of this recording. It appears to be from a working set of demo tapes that were used as the actual blueprint for The Final Cut -the last album that Pink Floyd would release with Roger Waters in the lineup. In some places the difference between this and the actual release are subtle, and in other places, the differences are quite stark, changing the overall tone of some of the meanings inferred from the actual release. We won't be listing all of the differences here, so you can enjoy your own personal exploration of this work in progress.

Free Range Pigs is releasing this volume for it's historical significance. While the sound quality is not "disappointing", the recording does "show it's age" in some places. We're not exactly sure, but it sounds as though this was recorded in a professional studio, so it is very likely that somewhere in this big world, a sonically superior copy exists.

Credits: Jim Canale and Free Range Pigs would like to thank the following people for their contributions to this effort:

Alejandro Gibaut for graciously providing the Source Recording.
The Pentagon Pig for providing Quality Assurance Services.
Aleksi Manninen for providing the Cover Art.

SPECTRES COMMENTS:
A very nice release by FRP, but rather fast and in need of some tweaking. As the original notes claim, this is from a "millionth generation" cassette, so the quality is a bit lacking. Most of the songs sounded muddy, very hissy, the high end weak, and a few of the songs were overdriven and bassy. I pumped up the highs on all of the tracks, boosted the levels on some and lowered them on others, reduced the hiss, speed corrected the tracks, flac'd at level 8 (removing all the sector boundary errors), and genned new fingerprints. The end result is the best I could do with what I started with. One thing I noticed is the high end boost brought out some nuances missed in the original tracks. You can hear Roger and some of the background effects better now.

The Ramones - 1980-02-11 - Amsterdam, NL (FM/FLAC)

(FM broadcast FLAC)

Ramones

02. Teenage Lobotomy (2:00)
03. Rockaway Beach (2:01)

11. California Sun (1:42)
12. I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You (1:21)
13. Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World (1:46)
14. Pinhead (2:22)

Total running time: 28 minutes and 22 seconds.

Combination of two different Dutch KRO FM radio broadcasts: "Rocktempel" in 1980, and "Op Slag Van Maandag" on March 13, 1988. The 1980 broadcast included tracks 5-14, while the 1988 one included tracks 1-9.

Part 1 (tracks 1-5) of this combined recording is taken from the 1988 broadcast.
Part 2 (tracks 6-14) of this combined recording is taken from the 1980 broadcast.
On the original 1980 broadcast track 5 is the first track and it cuts/fades in, because of the DJ still talking at the start of the song. That's why the two sources have been glued together after that track.

If someone wants the two original broadcasts as separate sets, just send me a PM, and I'm sure we can work something out.

Source and lineage (taped and transferred by Magnix; 1980 broadcast taped by JK): FM > Tape > WAV > CD-R > WAV > FLAC level 8.

Used software: Cool Edit Pro > Adaptec Easy CD Creator and/or Nero Burning ROM > EAC v0.95b4 > Cool Edit Pro v2.00 > CDWave v1.94.5 > FLAC v1.1.2 as build in Traders Little Helper v1.1.1 (build 90).

Another tape from the Magnix Live Archive.

The original transfer of these tapes was done (more than) 7 years ago (part 1 in December 1999 and part 2 in September 2000) when I had just started transferring (mostly older) tapes to CD-R. At this point I was not yet familiar with sector boundary errors and such. I used to record, edit, and split WAV-files with Cool Edit Pro before burning to CD-R. Later on I learned that Cool Edit Pro does not split exactly on sectory boundaries, which results in those annoying 0.2 seconds gaps (heard as pops when listening back). So, the CD-R'S of these tape-to-WAV transfers had these little gaps.
Also, FLAC, SHN, and the likes didn't exist yet (I think), and storage was not as easy as nowadays (with affordable external harddrives, recordable DVD's, etc.), so this was only burned as audio, and not as a lossless data backup file as well.
Now time has moved on, I'm going back to these older transfers to rip them for back up. When the rip is OK, EAC-wise and soundwise, it will be transferred to FLAC for backup purposes right away. If there's a problem, the old tape will be dug out again, and a fresh transfer is made when the tape hasn't gone down any further. And when I haven't come across the same or an upgraded version on a BitTorrent site or elsewhere, it will be shared for others to enjoy.
In this particular case the EAC-rip is error-free (sorry no log saved), and I do not have the original tape of the 1980 broadcast, so I have chosen to load all files in Cool Edit Pro (for editing and such it's an amazing piece of software) to combine the two recordings, and also edit out those mentioned mini-gaps by hand. The result is one large WAV-file, which has then been split to separate tracks again, using CD Wave this time.

This is one I am particularly excited about as I created the menus and chapter edits that you will see with my TMPGE DVD Authoring software.  I was originally provided with the video files which I used to create this exclusive DVD.  There are several versions of this show in circulation, but none to my knowledge contain this menu structure, which again, I created.

02. Rüdiger
03. Let It All Go
04. The Fizzy And The Still
05. True Love Will Never Fade
06. Done With Bonaparte

08. Brothers In Arms
09. Our Shangri-La

Additional comments from Jeroen van Tol's ON EVERY BOOTLEG fan site:

"This is a live recording of the fifth showcase that Mark Knopfler did to promote his new album Kill to get Crimson. After Berlin, Madrid, Amsterdam, and London, the AVO Session Basel has the honour of being his host festival. On 15th December, Swiss TV station SF Zwei broadcasted most of this special showcase. The tickets were not sold, but could only be won in contests on TV, the internet and on several radio stations. Donegan's gone was also played during the concert, but unfortunately not broadcasted. Soundboard recording with very good picture and sound quality."
