Notes:

From the earliest recordings made in 1967 to the sixteenth session in 2002 Bowie has contributed some fascinating live sets to the BBC archives.

The early recordings of Bowie at the BBC particularly hold great interest and document an artist still trying to find his way in the world with apparent giant leaps in style although if you really study them it’s more of a rapid evolution.

Most of the unofficial recordings have variable sound quality and generally attribute the wrong dates to the various sets Bowie performed up to the early 70s. Pick and mix bootlegs confuse matters still further as do the often repetitive set lists. The official Bowie at the BBC release is by far the best available but is far from complete so this is where this new release from Godfather steps in as in contains many of the important tracks missing from the original release and all in excellent quality.

Okay, the four volumes of ‘The Rise and Rise of Ziggy Stardust’ are more complete still, but have poor quality on some sessions. So if you have the official release then the ‘Lost Beeb Tapes’ makes a sensible purchase filling in most of the gaps in great quality.

The first session documents all the tracks from the Top Gear session of 1967. This vaudevillian period is often derided by Bowie fans but in truth the songs reproduced here live are worthy of re-evaluation and Bowie’s juvenilia is much more refined and developed than many would have us believe. These are clever songs for those with open minds and beautifully played.

‘When I’m Five’ is a sentimental monologue from the 1968 Top Gear Session and is the only full studio recording of the song (A rough demo also exists). The Dave Lee Travis Show of 1969 brings us a great version of ‘unwashed and somewhat slightly dazed’ delivered quite ferociously that in some way could be attributed to the then recent death of Bowie’s father.

The 1970 show offers us ‘Waiting for the man’ and ‘The Width of a Circle’ backed by Bowie’s then band ‘The Hype’. Both songs are guitar heavy workouts almost progressive in delivery.

The John Peel show of 1971 is quite an oddity and unique in sound and structure with various guest vocalists and friends helping Bowie fulfil his Warhol-come-Svengali aspirations. The pick of the sessions is the 1971 Bob Harris show featuring just Mick Ronson and Bowie in a stripped down acoustic set of ‘Hunky Dory’ songs. All the songs are played quite superbly and it’s surprising the whole set didn’t feature on the official release. The 1972 Bob Harris session completes the disc with a full on Ziggy version of the Velvet’s ‘White Light/ White Heat’. So it’s a 10/10 for Godfather so far.

Bonus tracks feature three tracks wrongly attributed to ‘Arnold Corns’ with the exception of ‘Moonage Daydream’. Unfortunately more complete and better quality versions of these three bonus tracks are available elsewhere.

There is some uncertainty about the date. This was originally listed as the 12th Nov. and the venue as Wheeling Coliseum. "Works 1/2" is also listed as the 12th.

Spicks & Specks TV-Special is an Australian program that shows a press conference, filming a concert at Festival Hall, etc. Last year, Australian TV showed the original (and otherwise mounted) 9-minute story about a press conference (GTK). Also appearances on popular American TV shows have been added (Tonight Show and Mike Douglas Show are especially interesting). The sources of all records are VHS (except for GTK), the quality is not bad, especially considering the rarity of the material.

This is a new and great sounding collection of Velvet Underground outtakes.

I suppose there is no contrast clause needed, as this is a compilation, but I did want to point out that everything here is 100% unreleased and didn't even make it to the deluxe editions. "Guess I'm Falling In Love" is a different performance than the one on the WL/WH deluxe. The same applies to the Matrix tracks, which are surprisingly good sounding Robert Quine recordings that were only discovered *after* the official box was released. The exact dates are not known for these recordings, so I did want to point out that they are definitely unreleased versions.

Both shows are in Paris France at the Olympia Theater. "This Is a Man's World" from the November 25, 1967 date has been released BUT IS NOT INCLUDED HERE. I have previously uploaded a version of this 1967 show: torrent- #281995. This seed is a massive upgrade in both quality and content. This DVD includes 20 additional minutes of up-front material for the 67 show as well as 11 minutes of material from 1966. The 66 stuff and a bit of the 67 are on youtube as of this writing, and have been viewed over 1,000,000 times.

Emil kindly provided a good copy of this track and Rameses II sended the link to me from UK where he's spending some holidays..thanks to you 2 :)

Another Luna release, Multicolored Blues is a double CD of studio demos & outtakes from the late stages of Jimi's career. Some of these tracks would appear on The Cry Of Love, the album that Jimi was working on at the time of his death. Some would remain unreleased until many years later, some in altered form under the administration of Alan Douglas. A few of the tracks on this CD, Astro Man, Maui Sunset, Pride Of Man, are nothing but jams, sometimes a more cohesive song would emerge from these jams (as in the case of Astro Man), sometimes not. But this was the way Jimi found his inspiration later in his career, rather than trying to write your basic 3 and a half minute single. Lots of great stuff here, though it will probably appeal more to someone who is already a Hendrix fan than the new listener. Alternate versions and mixes are the stuff we fanatics live for ;) One thing the Hendrix fanatic will notice is that 3 Little Bears, at 4:57 long, is listed on the back as being the complete long version. Well, it is longer than the version that appeared on the official release War Heroes, but it is far from complete. The actual jam lasts nearly 13 minutes, with the last 5 minutes or so containing some of the most amazing playing from Jimi since Little Wing (imho). Pick up Mixdown Master Tapes for the complete and best sounding version of it. This would make a nice set for the Hendrix fan who has all the standard releases, and is looking for something that perhaps shows how Jimi worked in the studio, developing his ideas into more finished and polished songs.

Quality is comparable to other Luna releases, very good to excellent. There are 4 tracks missing from the CDR copy of this set that I have. Very annoying, especially since only one song would have had needed to be removed from each CD to make the tracks fit on a couple of standard 74 minute CDs. All in all though, a good collection of alternate & demos versions of some of Jimi's later work.
